Great episode this week as Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum remember the first appearance of a very special guest in Season 3 Episode 5: PERRY!
The guys share on set intimidations working with the great Michael McKean, some funny and embarrassing off set stories with him, and what it was like working alongside a guest who really moves the show forward.
Michael talks about the crazy coincidence of the coinciding solar flares when the episode aired and how impressive the wire work was here.
Tom remembers his iconic tractor flipping scene and his flax seed fast while on set during this shoot.

I sometimes feel like the only way to really view this show is that everyone around Clark basically knows he's magic, but his friends are too nice to press him about any details, and Lex can never quite get any proof of exactly what's up. I mean Lionel TOTALLY knows Clark has super powers at this point but is just keeping quiet about it while keeping various investigations going for more info. But yeah that was a killer line by Ryan haha.
@vbrandy7088
@vbrandy7088 10 месяцев назад
Ryan wasn't entirely right tho cause Lana knew since Clark saved her from the tornado that he might be different, she even confronted him about it. Lana had suspicions hence why she believed Van in "Extinction" when he told her that Clark was bulletproof. As for Chloe she was always digging in Clark's personnal life cause she was intrigued by him being secretive and was like something doesn't add up lol. Perry's advantage was that he was conscious and right in front of Clark when he saw him using his powers.

The song "Walking in Memphis" I always believed was a tribute to Lane Smith's portrayal of Perry White in the old Lois and Clark the New Adventures of Superman. His character was a huge Elvis fan.

Aside from Christopher Reeve, Michael McKean is the best guest star this show ever had. The man just commands the screen every time he's on and his range of emotions is amazing. The scene with Michael at the Luthor Mansion especially is brilliant. He was the best choice to portray any version of Perry White.

I think Dean Cain's guest appearance was pretty cool too. I don't remember exactly what season he guest starred in (maybe season 7?) but I do remember watching it like "oh shit, that's Superman" lol.

@@SarahthevampyrslayerI think it was Season 6. He portrayed an immortal surgeon named Curtis Knox, which was supposed to be a version of Vandal Savage from the comics. This is where Season 3 really starts kicking into gear. Perry is such a key episode, and not only because it introduced an iconic character. It's the episode where Lex begins to unravel, where Lionel's deep dark past begins to come to the forefront and where Chloe starts wondering how she can escape Lionel's clutches. I also give it extra credit for treating a legacy character with respect. A lost art in today's Hollywood.

The reason "Walking In Memphis" was used in the ending scene was a tip of the hat to Lane Smith who'd played Perry White in "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." In the classic comics and TV series, Perry White was known for exclaiming "Great Caesar's Ghost" when he was surprised. In "Lois and Clark," since Lane Smith was a southerner, they made his Perry White an avid Elvis fan and his exclamation was "Great shades of Elvis." Hence, a song about Memphis. Sadly, Lane passed two years later from ALS.

I love almost every single episode of this television series. At the time this show came out, I was serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS GEORGE WASHINGTON CVN 73, and our ship was in NEW York harbor on September 11th. I was witness to one of the worst events in Hyman history, and our entire division would watch this show on our downtime. It kind of gave us exactly what we needed at that time, which was HOPE. The belief and hope in humanity 🙏 that we as military members needed so deeply. This show has magic in it.😢 There's a quality that is emanating from each and every episode that inspired all of us. Some of that has to do with the performances of. TOM WELLING and Michael Rosenbaum. Some of it has to do with the scripts of AL and MILES. (Who's presence is missed greatly in the last few seasons, IMO, but it's still good)and some of it has to do with the nature of the characters from Superman. No ther film or television show has captured the spirit of the source material in the same way. The show and its stories make the viewer want to be a better person. Thank you for your work. I promise you that it was time well spent. It had a positive effect on this world. 🌎

Perry and Clark were at their own crossroads. Remember how the story ended? Perry says to Clark something to the extent of “I read your stories. They need work, but they’re good. Hit me up if you need a job in Metropolis. I owe you one.” That planted the seed for Clark so he could start thinking about his future choices in life. Perry had his crossroads and he chose his path. It was perfect, IMO.

I seriously considered calling in about Perry White NOT noticing Clarks hands were healed less than 24 hours after suffering MAJOR rope burns while saving him at the end of the episode, but held off figuring someone else would mention it. (which ended up being the case) Just prior to this, Lana ALSO missed this when she met Clark in the barn in the previous scene.
@advlandvideo
@advlandvideo 10 месяцев назад
The reaction Lex had to Perry was spot on. While Lex wants to know Clark's secrets, he has a problem with Perry violating his friend's privacy. We see this many times. The internal turmoil of wishing to know someone better while still wanting to protect them. In this case, he has to deal with his dad's ruthless expectations, his own curiosity, and his relationships with both guys.

Having a patreon subscriber on is a fantastic idea. Love the podcast and I'll always hold on to Smallville, but understandably, Michael and Tom tend to not notice the shows easter eggs and references to other DC characters, franchises and some other deeper lore connections. It's almost never important to the overall story I admit, but people tend to appreciate those details. That's why the shows creators had the set designers put in references to things like "Smallville Crows vs Emerald Knights" on signs posted in the halls of Smallville High, as an example. Emerald Knights of course being a reference to Green Lanterns. It's also why there are entire youtube channels dedicated to pointing out all those references in movies and shows, channels that have million of subscribers and views in many cases. I've never seen anyone do an Easter egg breakdown for Smallville, it's quite an undertaking watching 220 or so episodes and paying attention for every last Easter egg, and since you guys are going through the series for the first time it's an excellent opportunity to point out those easter eggs. Having a patreon on the show would be a great opportunity to get a long time fans perspective on things, chances are they would have been a fan of Superman and superheroes before Smallville came out and may very well see a lot of references to other DC characters/franchises that otherwise go unmentioned.

Perry White dumping the flask after Clark threw the tractor was a direct homage to Superman 2 when Zod, Ursa, and Non where did on earth, but landed in the water, and then walked on water. The guy in the fishing boat saw this, looked at his cup, and then he dumped his cup over the side of the boat. Lol I love that they paid respect to that scene😆

I never had a problem with the song at the end. I always got the feeling that it was conveying new beginnings for both Perry and Clark because Perry offered an avenue into The Daily Planet (and we all know he ends up there). I don't think the lyrics were meant to be taken literally. I think it set the right mood for the end of this episode.

Pete came in clutch and seeing Pete and Lana saving Clark in this one was a nice twist 👍🏾👍🏾... Jonathan and Martha being super patient with Clark's powers going out of control (due to the solar flare) shows how great they are as parents (as usual, of course)... Kristen Kreuk will always be Lana Lang! Ok bottom line.. All the cast are superb!!!

Totally agree! Superman is my favorite superhero. But this show really made me fall in love with the character even more. One of the best shows ever made. Best origins of a superhero ever done. The show will always be one of a kind for many years to come.

13:10 Speaking as a former full time thespian myself what I love about this podcast and how most dedicated professional actors work is regardless of the show’s audience or rabid fanbase good actors may not know a damn thing extra about the franchise they are in BUT they WILL give it their all from scene to scene. Hearing one of the best Lex Luthor actors ever genuinely wonder out loud if Perry White is an important Superman side character simultaneously brought my DC loving heart nothing but joy and a tinge of pathetic fanboy sadness… “He doesn’t know who Perry White is!? Next you’re gonna tell me Rosie doesn’t know how many kids Perry has or where he went to school!?! Geesh, I hope somebody got fired for THAT blunder!?”… Moments later…. “Uh oh… I have wasted my life…” 😜🤣❤️ Great episode of Talkville btw!

This episode felt older and less teenage story, it was relatively slow but there were a lot of little hints about Clark's future as a hero and a journalist. I liked that they addressed the origins of Clark's powers from the sun, although he got to this conclusion quite fast. I liked the scenes with Lex, he is less reserved but more on edge and more emotional. Michael acts it brilliantly. Although I thought this episode was slow paced, for the easter eggs I will give it a 🌹 Next week a great episode can't wait!

The use of the song “Walking In Memphis” is a nod to how Perry White is a big fan of Elvis Presley. This is especially shown in the Lane Smith portrayal of the character from the 90s tv show Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman.

There's a nice little reference to the Adventures of Superman (1952), where Perry keeps calling Sheriff Adams "Chief," and at the end of the scene she responds "don't call me chief," which is what Perry White in AoS would exclaim all the time after Jimmy, Lois, or Clark would call him "Chief." I remember when I first watched this episode of Smallville, I got a good laugh out of that moment between Perry and Sheriff Adams.

"Perry" was one of the first Smallville episodes I watched with my Dad when it first aired. I kept going, "That's the guy from the Superman cartoon!" while my Dad explained Perry White was always Clark's boss in the comics.

One of my favorite episodes of the entire series. Michael McKean was a perfect choice to portray Perry White. I would also have to agree that Season 3 was beginning of Smallville hitting its stride. Back in the day, for me, Smallville was appointment television. My loved ones knew not to call -- absolutely no interruptions!! 💛💙❤️💋💯

Another thing that some others may have noticed that was at the beginning when Clark left his house to run into town. He walks out the door and you hear his super speed blast, but he’s clearly still walking away in the window. No big deal but, since the podcast likes to point out these things haha. Thanks for the fun show!

Always a favorite episode of Mine. Loved how the show brought in a DC character such as Perry White. And how the story of this episode had Perry trying to expose Clark and his powers, but after he is saved by Clark without them Perry realises that he didn't want to tear down a good person and thus decides to change Also really enjoyed his interactions with the other characters such as Lex, Chloe and even Lana. Also a plus that he is married to Annette O'toole/Martha Kent in Real. Overall, very exciting and funny episode.😀😀🙏

I really enjoyed this episode. I have seen both Michael and Annette in this show and Law & Order and loved those episodes. I really liked how this episode was kind of a nod to Superman 2 when Lois jumps into the river at Niagara Falls and wants Clark to save her just like Perry did to Clark. The effects were great and it was great that we got to see Clark use all but his x-ray vision in this episode. I also liked that they introduced a flawed Perry White and even though we don't see it on screen we see that he grew into the great chief we all know him to be. I definitely agree with Tom and Ryan with 2 roses. Great episode and great performance by everyone.

Thank you so much for doing this! I got so happy to find out you guys have a podcast about Smallville. So good to hear your voice again! I am from Brazil and I remember my sister watching it on TV every single week but I was too young to get interested (it was also a big hit on Brazilian television). I am now 28 and I heard the opening song somewhere on the internet and it triggered my old memories so I started watching the show. I am just loving it! I even did my fiancé watch it with me, and he doesn’t really watch shows, so that says a lot about the quality. Ps: I live in Canada so I know very well the sadness of being in the rainy cold, no-sun country ahahaha😅 Keep up the hard wiek

That tractor toss is one of my favorite scenes in all of Smallville! Also, I'm curious why Annette O'Toole didn't get even one second of screen time with her husband. Jonathan even has a line saying that Martha "managed to get [Perry] off the farm." I would have liked to have seen them interact.
