Just bought one of these for rock climbing in the UK. white noise at sea cliffs and moorland rivers makes it a nightmare at times to hear safety calls, the easy big center push button sold it. Thanks for such a detailed review!

The 2W power here in the US makes a huge difference and allows for them to be useful.

Excellent review thanks! I got them for my kids, I like the minimalistic style and the led/PTT feature, which makes its operation very intuitive for children. In another youtube review, they got 1.5km out of it....wondering whether with the programming cable it's possible to set it on 2W and get even more range.

If they are supported by CHIRP software (google) it might be possible to turn them up to 2 W

APPRECIATED. THESE KIND OF SETS HAVING 500 MW AND FREQUENCY 446 DO NOT WORK EVEN A 250 METERS IN THE CITY. HOWEVER IN THE CROSS COUNTRY THEY MIGHT WORK UP TO 1KM TO 2 KM. IF USED VIA REPEATERS, THEY ARE QUITE USEFUL.

Are the pre programmed frequencies the same as other Retevis models so you can use them with other Retevis models straight out of the box? Sorry if obvious, im a newby

These are great little radios, I have given a couple to my kids, as they are great they can’t fiddle with any settings like most other PMR 446. The only issue I found is they can still unlock the keypad and change channel, so no use to contact them anymore!, my solution? Use the software to set all 16 channels to the same frequency and dcs code!, this way even if they unlock the key lock and change the channel number on the radio, they will still be on the same frequency and can still communicate! Great I thought, problem solved until I tried to do this in the software but Retevis lock the channel frequencies I guess to remain PMR446 compliant. A little more digging and I found they use the same software as a radioddity handset (r2 I think) so another download of software and you can set the frequency in radioddity software, save the file then open in retevis software and upload to the handset and bingo!
@markylootube
@markylootube Год назад
I set them to channel 15 frequency as many people use the original 8 channels, those frequencies are quite busy round here, and I also have a dcs code set to block out the squelch opening for anyone swearing e.t.c. On the radios. Using the newer channel 15 is much quieter as more pmr446 on general sale o lot use the original 8 channels, only if you are techie or end up doing your research do u find a bargain such as these radios that are cheap and cheerful, great for people who aren’t techie (once set up) and are still legal! Very happy with them, they are the best PMR446 I have ever used (of non professional handsets).

Nice work around Mark. Did you use radioddity software or chirp? Did you notice if there is the option to bump them up to 2 watts?
@markylootube
@markylootube Год назад
@@mattibeag1385 I used the radioddity software to download the settings, change what I wanted then saved the file, opened it in the Retevis software then re-uploaded. From memory I think you could select low/high power and I think from the spec the high was 1 watt. I haven’t been able to test to see if they transmit further though.

Those cheap PMR devices are a perfect toy for kids, for more serious applications I got a Retevis RT40 DMR which is legal here in Austria, but I think also legal in the UK. DMR is better than dPMR as it is compatible to other DMR devices and you can also use the RT40 in PMR mode to still communicate also with cheaper analog PMR devices. With DMR you get more privacy as not many people use such devices, only downside is that you get some kind of "robot voice" due to digital modulation.

The UV5R is the radio guys choice and i love mine but these PMR radios are 100% legal and very easy to use. Different market.
@jessihawkins9116
@jessihawkins9116 Год назад
@@CB-RADIO-UK but you can use these same frequencies on the uv5r and get more transmit power. you can also get murs, gmrs, frs and more and they’re only $25. For that price you can get them as stocking stuffers for the kids to play with. My teenage son had loads of fun with his friends pranking walmart and the Taco Bell drive through speaker. Plus there good to use for paintball 😃
