Rethinking The Women at The Empty Tomb: The Mark Series pt 66 (

It will be helpful for us to look at the account of the women finding the tomb of Jesus empty with fresh eyes. When we consider how embarrassing it was in 1st century culture to rely upon women witnesses, how important the idea of Jesus being physically raised was and how impactful the claim of the empty tomb was, we find that what we have here is remarkable evidence for the trustworthiness of the Gospel accounts of women finding the tomb of Jesus empty after He was buried there. Add this to the rest of the evidence for the resurrection of Christ and the case is quite powerful. What was considered and embarrassing fact of history back then is a wonderful piece of evidence from a modern historiographical perspective. In other words, it's true.
This is part 66 of the Mark Series, going verse by verse through the Gospel of Mark. Today we are in Mark 15:40-16:8.

As far as women in the life of Jesus, I think the Mary ( Jesus’ mother) watching the cruxifixction is so compelling. I don’t know how a mother could watch her son suffer and die in such a horrendous way unless she knew who He is.

I believe it was Todd White who said Mary was the one person to know 100% who Jesus was...... she knew she was with no man..... I thought that was pretty wonderful so many things we just read past in the Bible without really thinking (at least I know I'm always thinking and learning new things normal things I just read past can be so meaningful) I just thought that was a cool point

Mike, I don't comment that often - not as often as I'd like and should - to say thanks to you, as I do my artwork whilst letting the playlist run its course. Now, with fingers covered in paint, I usually just get on with my paintings rather than stop, clean my hands, and comment. I must say that I find it unbelievable, the amount of hours of research you put into each single video. I have watched the whole Mark series up to now, and the amount of stuff I learned, although I already was quite "Bible steady", have been into apologetics since being saved, and have watched countless hours of debates, for instance, is sheer incredible! There is so much that would have totally passed me by, which I learned to pay attention to, which is not only incredibly valuable with regard to understanding the content you already presented, but also gives me a reference point and teaches me crucial methods in reading the Bible and applying cross-references etc. in the future. You once gave the example from this book you read, of men being more "Waffle-minded" in their thinking and how they organise information, whereas women tend to be more "Spaghetti-minded". I must say, the way you relate different information, books in the Bible, allegories, reference, and more, to one another, has been a revelation and truly eye-opening to me. I can't thank you enough for all this, especially in the light of this being all free content. It's of such incredible value, so just wanted to give you my acknowledgement and gratitude for the immense service you are doing to your fellow believers, and for sure also some unbelievers, who hopefully find their way to Christ Jesus through your intense and understandable Bible study. Thank you with all my heart. May our Lord continue to guide you with the help of the Holy Spirit, and strengthen you, so that you can be a blessing in so many more people's lives as you have been in mine. God bless you and all your loved ones! ♡

Thank you for this Mike. I love these series because it just goes to show, the Bible is not just some text that only a really small portion of the population are able to understand, but everyone can. It’s just the way we think about it. whenever you unpack this stuff I really feel like it’s truly mine and I’m not just quoting some guy I heard on the Internet 😂. No offense. I just don’t like to feel like I depend on another human to “get my truth”. But I really appreciate these studies because I feel like eventually I will be able to do the same with less hand holding. Granted maybe not as in depth because it’s not my full time job but ... enough to know who’s lying and who’s not. Something that’s very important to me.

The fall of man began with a woman in the garden and God's promise to redeem all men, see Gen 3:15.. The salvation of man begins with our risen Savior speaking to a woman in a garden and sealing all mankind's redemption.. I like God's way of fulfilling His promises to his people. ❤

@Sherlock245
@Sherlock245 3 года назад
The fall of man began when men could not tell women not to eat and gave in. As the leader it was Adam’s responsibility to protect and provide for his family. Even though Eve sinned before Adam, God questioned Adam first (Genesis 3:9). This was because of the leadership role God ordained for husbands in marriage. Just as sin and death came through one man, Adam, it is also through one man, Jesus Christ, that grace and righteousness are given as free gifts to sinners. The naming of Christ as the Last Adam and the multiple comparisons of Adam to Christ would be invalid and nonsensical if original sin came through Eve.
@maryhunt3083
@maryhunt3083 3 года назад
@@Sherlock245 I agree, what you said about Adam. Eve was the last of Jehovah's creation and the least experienced, Adam listened to the least experienced creation instead of the wisdom of the one who created wisdom and therefore dammed many.
@marlam8625
@marlam8625 3 года назад
If I may, a correction to your analogy to make it ‘apples to apples’ 🍎 The fall of man began with a Woman, so too the salvation of man begins with a Woman. Adam and Jesus is each the ‘effective cause’ of sin entering and of sin being taken away. So too is Eve the ‘instrumental cause’ of death coming into the world, so too is Mary the ‘instrumental cause’ of life coming into the world.
@marlam8625
@marlam8625 3 года назад
@@Sherlock245 I don’t think it would be nonsensical if original sin came thru Eve first. I actually believe it was beautifully designed to be that way. Sin and death entered the world thru Eve to Adam just as life entered the world in Jesus thru Mary. The Gospel of John draws this out as he harkens back to Genesis and the relationship of Adam and Eve- in union with one another. In the beginning…Jesus is the light etc. John’s first chapter parallels the days of creation with ‘The next day’ the next day, and the next day and then Chapter 2 starts: On the third day…. Counted up, it’s the 7th day- a new marriage is happening; a new creation. Jesus steps in as a new Adam as the new bridegroom in Cana; bridegroom to his bride the Church…. There is so much more, but I’ll throw it back to you if you’d like to respond to this setting of the stage.

So how does Mike Winger satisfactorily reconcile the original ending of Mark with the other accounts? In og Mark the women don't obey the stranger at the tomb's instructions to go to Galilee and tell the disciples the good news but choose instead to tell no one anything - end of story, so in og Mark not only does no one _see_ the risen Jesus the disciples themselves never even get to _hear_ about it! And if Jesus said things on the cross other than "My god my god, why hast thou forsaken me" why didn't Mark report them? Why's it left up to the Mike Wingers of the world to imply that other things were 'probably' said but Mark didn't consider them important enough for his particular account? Was Jesus's forgiving of his enemies on the cross not worth mentioning for Mark? Its like the later gospels added the meeting between Jesus and the disciples that was only alluded to in og Mark! If this was the case they would have to have completely invented the dialogue that was said at this meeting!

Why are you ignoring the account that documents what they saw and supposedly never told anyone? The author was not believed to have been one of the woman, so the author would have had to find out from the women. Why are we forced into such wooden readings that they never said anything? Divine encounters in the OT and NT tend to have a strong effect on people. Do you think the woman just kept running away, across Mesopotamia, across modern-day India, and through modern-day China? As you'll notice, it's not mentioned that they stopped running, so we're forced to believe they simply never stopped, right? " And if Jesus said things on the cross other than "My god my god, why hast thou forsaken me" why didn't Mark report them?" All accounts are selective. Or are you operating under the preconceived notion that historical documents document every small detail that the author saw directly or gathered together from other sources? Have you noticed a lot of history doesn't refer to frequent trips to the bathroom? "Why's it left up to the Mike Wingers of the world to imply that other things were 'probably' said but Mark didn't consider them important enough for his particular account?" It doesn't take a Mike Winger. It takes anyone with a modicum of understanding. We have gaps of hours, days, and weeks between events discussed. Do you think everyone was standing around silently for extended periods of time until the next topic was brought up? That if something isn't brought up, it's because it didn't happen? "Was Jesus's forgiving of his enemies on the cross not worth mentioning for Mark?" Deserves the same response as above. Repeating yourself doesn't make what you said any stronger.
@cardcounter21
@cardcounter21 3 года назад
@@TheEngineerd _'...All accounts are selective...'_ So what if you only ever get to read one account? What if og Mark is the only account that ever reaches you? What would you make of the ending? You'd be left with the questions "Who was the mysterious stranger?", "Did Jesus really rise from the dead, because no one actually saw it?", "And why did the women disobey the stranger/angel and say nothing to anyone when it brings the story to a crashing, inconclusive, end?" Each gospel account is a telling of the story as the authors believed it was. Why on earth would three of them 'select' to omit the line "Today, you will join me in paradise" when it's iconical and vital to the overall message of the story! This idea of the four gospels being 'selective' is utter garbage! It's Mike Wingers weak attempt to try and explain why they give almost completely different accounts of Jesus's words and suffering on the cross! _'...Why are you ignoring the account that documents what they saw and supposedly never told anyone?...'_ Because all those accounts came _later!_ And just as there's evidence scribes tried to 'add' an ending to og Mark to make it more satisfactory its also plausible the other gospel accounts _added_ the meeting between Jesus and the disciples that was only alluded to in og Mark! Its called progression! _'...Or are you operating under the preconceived notion that historical documents document every small detail that the author saw directly or gathered together from other sources?...'_ The gospels don't fall into the category of traditional historical documents because they're supposedly divinely inspired! And when they are delivering a message so consequential to our eternal fates its vitally important they are consistent and without irregularities that can sow any seeds of doubt. _'...It doesn't take a Mike Winger. It takes anyone with a modicum of understanding. We have gaps of hours, days, and weeks between events discussed. The author had a Dilemma here. It may have been seen as unreliable to have women as witnesses, but it was a woman's job to take care of the body post death. It would have been more unbelievable for men to witness the empty tomb first as it was not their job. So to increase the Believability of the tale, he had women discover the tomb. Of course a tale set in a certain time period Would have element of truth from that time. To me it still seems like an author making things fit into the narrative to make it seem truthful.

Hey Mike, I’m a pretty strict “Calvinist” which I only found out I was by watching one of your videos saying why you are not Calvinist. Lol I still don’t understand fully the big deal about it that people seem to make out there. I still always give a like to each of your videos. I do like your content and to think biblically. Thank you for all of your videos

You might look at a video titled, "Why Calvinist can only say Jesus "might" have died for you." It might give you some ideas why there are objections to Calvinist doctrine.
@AlexanderTate.
@AlexanderTate. 3 года назад
@@NdxtremePro thank you. I do understand how someone can say that and it just comes down to a lack of understanding of God and how he works. The Bible teaches of the sovereignty of God. He controls all things. Nothing happens that is not according to his will. See there are people who are going to hell and some that are going to Heaven. Not everyone is going to heaven and not everyone is going to hell. When God made this world he already knew who was going to be saved and who was not. Jesus died for the ones who are going to Heaven. Jesus did not die on the cross for the ones going to Hell. That would make God lesser to say he didn’t know who is saved and who is not. Jesus died for who will believe in him. The Bible also gives us our condition and saying we are dead in our sins. We are a slave to our sins. We can not come to God on our own. If you think you chose to believe in God or that Jesus died for you, it’s really you responding to Gods grace and him electing you. So no one knows if Jesus died for them until God calls us to him then you’ll know. I know I’m not a great communicator so I hope I wasn’t confusing. To me the Arminian view is just less deep Calvinist view. Both believe in the same saving gospel they just differ on how it all works. Calvinist from my perspective is just a deeper understanding of the Bible. Both will be saved.

@@EkaRudi Thank you for your massage to me. I’m a fairly new Christian or follower of Christ so I don’t hold a position of much knowledge. I have been basically addicted to this. I feel as if my soul is trying to catch up for all the years I didn’t know. I study and read and re read the Bible. I listen to many pastors even ones I know are heresy just to hear a distinguish the false teachings. But mostly to highly recommend pastors. I love Mike and this channel a lot and it has helped me understand a lot and I can tell he is a great guy. I’ll check out the names you gave me. When I met the living Jesus I really thought I had a tumor in my brain. He really had to work hard with me and over a decade later he has cured me of all doubt. It is just impossible for me not to believe. I was worse than Thomas. I needed to see the nail holes in his hands and then I needed him to convince me I wasn’t going crazy. Jesus was faithful to me. I just love him. I latched on like a octopus and have been walking with him ever since in light and dark, through joy and discipline. If you are having trouble believing or struggling with doubt, take your hands off the controls, and turn it all over to him. Make a choice that you will believe every word he says if only he will help you hear him speak. See you in the sky!

Mark 16:1 is why there seems to be two sabbaths during holy week which indicates Jesus wasn't crucified on Friday. It was still dark when they went to the tomb on Sunday. Yet here it's early and after the sabbath. So obviously it wasn't Sunday after the Saturday sabbath when they got the spices. Jesus was crucified on Wednesday, Thursday was the High Sabbath, Friday was the day after the sabbath of 16:1, then Saturday was the weekly sabbath and he rose on Sunday. That's three days and three nights.
@TheWestlane
@TheWestlane 3 года назад
Correct. I don't know what day specifically Jesus died but I don't believe it was a Friday. There were two sabbaths the week Jesus was crucified. The Old Testament tells us that the 14th of Nissan is passover, Jesus dies on the day of passover, and the 15th is the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, a day if rest (sabbath). So the 15th of Nissan is a high day sabbath not the 7th day or weekly Sabbath.

I know this is an old comment, but in case you didn't get an answer from another video, Mike is using a software called logos. It's basically a digital reference library for Bible resources, super helpful but its not free and can very expensive depending on how many books you purchase on that platform. IMO totally worth it

Gosh maybe I will be hated here, but women in this time have more of a voice in society and the church than they have ever had. The rise of female pastor and leader has been accelerated in modern Christianity (which I don’t agree with). As we speak we have a female Vice President in arguably one the most influential countries on the planet the USA. Also along with that women have a sexual freedom that 50 years ago they would never have. I want to be make it clear the abuse that has happened to the 2 women in the comments is gross and abominable. But to say that women’s voice have not grown or is not being heard into society especially in western society is not true. My question as a women is are we doing good with our voice.

@@claudiabailey5302 I have been nearly raped, sexually assaulted, discounted, called a Jezebel spirit, kicked out of churches, called spiritually inept because my husband died (it was my fault because I didn't care enough about him, you know), and it even went as far as a church trying to harass my husband and I to leave our property because he was an ex-convict. I have little respect for churches ran by white men. They have hurt me more than any other organization I've ever been involved with. I'm trying a new church who has a female pastor. We'll se but so far it's better.

I often wondered why Our Lord would have his mostly illiterate women followers , considered unteachable in their day, as the first ones to come to His tomb & discover His resurrection. First it was their love & care for Our Lord Jesus Christ that compelled them to want to serve by anointing His body and most importantly it was to restore all women back to the Father fulfilling the promise made to Eve of a deliverer since it was thru Eve all mankind & all creation fell. As a woman this is very very significant because it’s shows me, we are all equal in our Lord Jesus Christ as servants no matter our roles.🙏🏽👼🏼🕊
