As you were publishing this video, I just finished making a large arboreal enclosure for my super dwarf retic (having some huge floor surface as well as height). A very complex system of branches (up to 8-10 branches at the top). My animal has been loving it so far! Perching like a green tree python, using every inch of its enclosure. Can't even begin to tell how active it has become. I hope, that together with Garret you'll change the view on how these guys should be kept. Fantastic video, keep it up!
@MegaTerryNutkins

That's how it's done, giving your animal the freedom to exhibit natural behaviour. You'll get 10x more enjoyment out of your pet just knowing you are providing it with the correct environment.
@mhb9957
@mhb9957 4 года назад
@@MegaTerryNutkins not what I was asking. I was wondering if he had a template design to base it off of. Creating a giant arboreal cage for a very large snake is far different than creating one for a small snake. But I understand how you interpreted it. It's very hard to find DIY cages for a massive cage rather than a standard 6'x2'
@MegaTerryNutkins
@MegaTerryNutkins 4 года назад
@@mhb9957 I was replying to mefasm. Your best bet might be to go and look at display enclosures in zoos. For big retics a lot of people build wooden enclosures and use marine epoxy to coat them, pond liner on the base might be beneficial to extend the life of the enclosure with all the urine and knocked over water bowls you will inevitably get.

@goldenhate6649
@goldenhate6649 Год назад
@@michaelhayes6209 i know Im late to the party but wanted to add: retics in the wild aren’t taking down baby pigs or lambs. They are eating a bunch of smaller meals or the occasional big one and then chilling for a long time. I have a suspicion ball pythons are notoriously sedentary because we feed them too much as well. They never go ‘hunting’. Snakes don’t explore for entertainment, they explore for food.

So glad you touched on husbandry and cage sizing. I owned about 21 snakes at one point. Mostly colubrids, never was into Pythons or boids much. Eventually the guilt of keeping them in stackable enclosures they could never have a realistic home territory in got to me. I passed them all on to other reputable keepers I know and now just focus on snakes in the wild. I’m sorry, but an animal that has a home range of a square mile or more (or even much less than that) shouldn’t be kept in a 2’ x 2’ cage. It’s just not for me.
@grisflyt
@grisflyt 4 года назад
I agree. I love boas, but rather than getting a Bcc (my favorite), I got a Tarahumara mountain boa. Males tops out at around 4'. I can provide sufficient space for a snake that size. You can virtually not do that to something like a Burmese python, which has an average home range of 22.5 square kilometers. I haven't found any study on retics, but I assume they don't move less. The general idea of boas and pythons as ambush foragers is also challenged today. They aren't just sit and wait predators, but actively hunt and seek out their prey. Boas go into caves to take bats when they sleep, for example. A snake that takes a monkey up in the trees doesn't do that by dumb luck. They pick a spot where they know the monkeys will pass.
@josephwinebrinner2296
@josephwinebrinner2296 4 года назад
This is why i will never own a snake of that size. I don’t have the space and i accept it. I have 2 9 year old ball pythons that are just at 1300grams and extremely healthy. Screw power feeding, keep them healthy! I want them to live long not breed and eat to death
@illoney5663
@illoney5663 4 года назад
Also, if you have a proper sized enclosure for a retic rather than this patheric "industry standard" that will help reduce obesity as it'll allow them to move around, thus burning off excess fat to a much greater degree.

Great Vid- I love Thailand. The first Reticulated Python I ever saw lived in what used to be two separate bedrooms, used to be, he made it one big room for his snake. I will never forget looking up at the window and watching this neverending snake hanging in the branches in his own room. After a few days I worked up enough nerve to knock! Dad, My Family has a farm in Rayong Province in the Gulf of Thailand. I go out into the farm at night to take temperatures. Regularly at 4-5 AM in the morning as the fog/mist is present, I see temperatures of 65 F. During the day when the temperatures at 85-90 F the retics become dormant and sleep up in the trees or in cooler areas around the base of the trees. I talk to my Thai family members and other locals, they confirm my observations and state that the retics are most active in the low to mid 70 degree range.

As someone moving into keeping larger species, this was really enlightening. I was considering getting a Retic in the near future but this made me change my mind and push that back. I want one but I would rather wait till I can afford to give one a proper and large enclosure. The Brazilian Rainbow Boa episode (I commented on that prior getting one) really helped define the husbandry I have for mine. I really appreciate this series, & hope informative it is. I can't wait to see what else you have coming up in the Thailand series!! I'd be interested in seeing other large common constrictors like Burms in the AWKTC? series!!

They are much different snakes than ball pythons or burms. I am a little put off by some of the tactics I see breeders using to sell these snakes to uneducated people who just want to look cool with a big snake. I hope we as reptile enthusiast can keep the situation in check because I definitely don’t want to see any regulations or bans come back.

As someone who is still doing research before keeping their first reptile this series provides an invaluable perspective. I feel like in the hobby we can be too accommodating and maybe sensitive to what we feel the animal needs. This shows the margin for error in care is not as thin as we think.

You've given SO MUCH knowledge on replicating wild conditions that, ultimately we as keepers would struggle to ever find out ourselves. Such an asset to the exotic animal industry and such a hero. Mr Kaufman we appreciate you!

Nice work, Dav! I appreciate the truth whether it hurts some or not. It's for the betterment of the animals and that's what matters most.

I have quite a few snakes from Dan and Apple...love those guys...one of my most favorite things about your videos is how you hit at the heart of how improperly American's especially keep and FEED their animals....just awesome Dav...had a quick meet with you at Pomona when we got snakes from Dan but sure hope to meet up with you again in the future...keep on keeping on Dav....just awesome!!!

I love how this acknowledges reptiles in captivity as well as their wild counterparts. No better way to teach reptile keepers on the best husbandry than to show them the wild environments
