I’m from Northern Thailand and Tokay geckos are commonly found in people’s houses. Many people consider them pests and will try to get rid of them. My dad, however, lets a few of them live in our house because they are really good at keeping mice and small snakes away from our house.

I would love to see you do one on leopard geckos. They’ve been in the hobby for so long and people see them as an “easy” reptile, which may be true but I would love to see how they behave in the wild and what exactly there environment looks like so that we could make better husbandry decisions when keeping them.

Thank you for this video. I have owned a few Tokay's over the years and they are by far one of my absolute favorite geckos. I know the aggression and have been bitten a few times myself so I know exactly what you felt when that big male bit you. So just to share a story. When I got my first Tokay I knew nothing but I loved the colors and aggression is always a factor for me. The owner of the pet shop was afraid of it and refused to sell it without the enclosure. OK fine. I lived in south Florida and kept most of my reptiles on the patio. The Tokay was one of two lizards that where allowed to run free. Him and my iguana boss man. Boss man had an open bay enclosure and 98% of the time I would find them two in boss mans cage together. Not next to each other but they both loved that cage and shared it. The Tokay really never wanted to leave the cage and after hearing your story I now understand why. The iguana's cage was set up with a mist system and basking lights. He was there for the humidity and basking time, and the iguana never cared. I would not say they where buddies but they did co-exist.

I love this video so much. Tokays are my favourite gecko and this video really helped me add more to my bioactive vivs. A couple of my tokays are socialized; its really amazing to spend time with a calm, friendly tokay. They're tremendous lizards, and a lot smarter than we think, they're incredibly athletic and clever lizards . And for anyone who wants to keep tokays, you need to really really love them and have a lot of patience. Reading their body language and learning their boundaries is key to earning their trust. Also food. Food wins them over almost every time. My cbb male is gentle enough to handfeed (he will sit on my hand or lap and I can feed him calcium dusted crickets) I cannot wait till my cbb tokays are old enough to breed, producing hand raised cbb babies is the end goal!

I really enjoyed this video. I live on the southern edge of Bangkok and have a number of tokays living around my home. From time to time they move into the house and spend varying lengths of time living there. There is always plenty of food available as I breed mealworms, superworms, dubias, crickets and cockroaches for my other animals. They can become hand-tame and will accept food from my hand. They tend to poop in the same place so it is easy to leave a sheet of newspaper there in the evening and clear it away in the morning. Eventually, they move out looking for love and adventure elsewhere but it is never too long before another one turns up. Humidity can vary throughout the day and night so the tokays in my home are able to regulate their environment by hiding in different locations. The room where I keep animals is usually quite hot but some enclosures are more humid than others so the tokays can find the conditions that suit them best at different times of the day. I would think that the wild tokays can do the same at the temple to a certain extent.

I lived in an upper story house in Chiang Rai, Thailand, and there were at least a dozen Tokay's. They could come in to the kitchen, which was fun. But one morning my girlfriend discovered one just outside eating a bat. Yes, a bat. I even have a picture somewhere. Meanwhile, I've kept over 25 speicies of lizard in my life, but none recently. Nowadays I just keep some simple fish, because they are so much easier. But I still fantasize about keeping lizards. The care is so difficult, I tend to think it might just be more appropriate for a lot of people to keep a local variety in and outdoor enclosure. I kept blue-bellies and an alligator lizard like this when I was a kid, and only fed them what I could find in my backyard + some meal worms. They did very well, and much, much better than if I'd tried to keep them inside in an aquarium. Later, when I was more responsible, I did that, too. But nowadays, I'm going back to simple pets and simple care, because I enjoy them as much as the more exotic ones.

I got mine 4 days ago, and this video was a great insight. I did research beforehand, and did provide uvb, humidity, and heat. But my basking spot is a tad cooler than the ambient temperature you recorded, so I’ll be getting a new heat emitter for him. The sexing tip was great too, I’ve never been the best at the usual method of looking for femoral pores. It was so nice to see how everyone in the village respected the tokay geckos, you never see that in America. One thing I’ll also mention is that I’ve heard they can also enjoy baby food or other mashed fruit. I read in reptiles magazine that a lady had a tokay in her house that ate half of her lemon pie!

On my house I have a 15 inch long Tokay Gecko. He/she has been on my home living in a hole by my roof for 6 months, all spring and summer. The gecko appears outside on the wall nightly at 8 pm and makes beautifu "Tokay calls and sounds" all night long :) until dawn. I am in a very an area where Tokays are not around much, like very very rare to see in the wild. I decided I wanted to collect this gecko and bring it indoors as a pet because even though I live in very hot climate, fall is here and soon winter when it drops to 50/60 degrees at night and some days which is too cold for a Tokay and that can be very bad, especially if it goes into brumation and gets too cold. I am working on a lovely home for the gecko a nice terrarium. We started to try to catch the gecko last night and it was very easy to net and get into box but my friend didn't wait until I was able to assist and he wasn't expecting it to jump out of box so fast and before he shut the lid the gecko rushed out, jumped on ground and climbed back up the wall about 10 feet from it's hole. The gecko stopped making any calls for the rest of the night and now this morn, at 5am its not where it usually is. It's usually close to it's hole (home), so it can crawl in close to daylight, it sleeps in. Did we scare it away forever? I am heart broken ( I am vey bonded to this beautiful creature and every night I go out and look at it and talk to it and have complete respect for it). I had told my friend that when we went to collect it, we could not botch this up because I was afraid of chasing it away :'(. Did we chase it away forever? I am out looking and I don't see it any longer anywhere it usually is by the hole. It was quiet all night long after the botched catching episode last night. I know it's not hurt very gently we were and it went climbing right back off ground up to it's usual spot just not making sounds anymore and now has disappeared. Do they always return to their hole? Did we scare it away forever? I waited to see it climb into its hole this am at dawn and I don't see it anywhere.

Such incredible geckos & quite misunderstood (in my opinion) I personally would LOVE for you to do a tegu edition of ‘in the wild’ I feel it’ll help me & other tegu owners & also raise awareness for these stunning & intelligent reptiles! Keep up the good work Dāv😁❤️

I was thinking about that actually. I'd love to visit Argentina and do that one day.

I love how the country protects the geckos and knows how endangered they are. And can you tell me the 5 species?

They are so darn cute! Probably shouldn’t stop rubbing his belly and you won’t get bit.😂🤣 I definitely enjoyed your adventure... The lighting made some of them look blue and almost maroon on that baby. It would be hard not to bring one home. 👍

They live in burrow champers under ground and rock craggs of Pakistani desert. 12-18 inches of loamy moist soil spot partially covered by a board. Best seen they're left in groups and raise own eggs and young.
