I just had laser surgery this morning to repair a tear in my retina and to repair the peripheral portions of the retina. I have a high tolerance for pain and this was one of the most painful things I ever experienced. Trying to look in a certain position with a very bright light and searing laser was horrific. Next week I have a pre-op for cataract surgery and now I'm scared to death.

This video makes it seem like there’s zero pain or discomfort involved with the procedure. I’ve had 10+ laserpexis in just the past year. At first it wasn’t that painful, but now each treatment is incredibly, incredibly painful. What they don’t show in the video is having to lay on your back and using a clamp & speculum to pry the skin around the eye open to access hard to reach areas of the retina. They also don’t accurately capture how bright the light is, nor the fact that the procedure causes your tear ducts and sinuses to evacuate completely turning your face into a wet snotty mess (at least it does with me). The pain, while extreme, is short lived. It’s generally gone within 24 hours. But for several hours after the procedure I’m in so much pain that I crawl into the fetal position and have to put a cloth over my eyes to block any light once I get home. Ophthalmologists should consider using a powerful anesthetic or sedation on patients who aren’t getting successful results. The pain is very real, and the anxiety associated with an upcoming appointment and knowing that it likely won’t be effective is difficult to describe.

@Jim Wise No, my last treatment was over 20 years ago, I do go back every year for a check-up. Since 2019 I go every 6 months because I had a cataract removed/lens replacement and it causes a higher risk of tearing and holes.

Why don’t you tell people about the nightmare that occurs when the Dr is careless and lasers into the field of vision without warning the patient. I have white flicking lights in each area treated that falls in my field of vision and to say it is debilitating is a vast understatement. Most retinal specialist are just in it for the money and perform unnecessary procedures in borderline cases. Once the damage is done the nightmare lasts a lifetime. Be careful when a retinal specialist tries to sell you on a procedure. Get several opinions and don’t trust these “doctors”.

I'm sorry that happened to you. That is one of my fears. I have holes in both eyes and my doctor recommends laser surgery to be on the safe side. I am concerned if I should get it or not, and wonder if my doctor might be saying it cause she gets money from the surgery. I want to get other doctors opinions as well.

To say this procedure is painless is an outright lie. I just went through this and it was one of the most painful surgeries I've even experienced. It felt like the doctor was welding a manhole cover to the back of my eye. I appreciate your video, but I'd appreciate your honesty more.

Exactly thats what i felt toooo...as if the doc was scooping my eye out from the back....i was so tensed as it was my first time going through this and doc was so rude and arrogant too...worst experience, he didn't even informed me that he was starting the procedure,he even told that i wasn't going to experience any pain...and i ended up being in total crisis.. and he also never talked about an after care....

@@ianhillman4007 actually my eyes aren't doing well ,ever since that I'm seeing a lot of flashes ,white light streams that shimmers for a while and then go away... @@sruthipriyass4951 good to hear from you. My appointment with the doctor is next Thursday. I'm praying for good news. My vision is still blurry and I see the odd flash of light from time to time as well. My friends ask me what my vision is like. I tell them it is like looking thru a Jackson Pollock painting. 🤣🤣 I've heard it can take months for our vision to improve, if it ever does. Let's just hope for the best. Take care of yourself. 🙏
