Yet another of my hand-picked collections of British ads from the 80s and 90s, featuring the usual games, toys, junk food, old technology, unexpected famous faces and voices, public information films, animation, funny moments, and more. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
I'm still trying to gauge which sorts of ads go down best in these compilations, and I started off making this one with more serious adulty ads only, before changing my mind halfway through. As it is, I love seeing where the likes of Apple, Atari, and Nintendo were at various points, and likewise how tastes change down the years. And while I've heard of PIFs, this time I've also included a Community Service Announcement - does anyone know what those were all about? Meanwhile, wasn't there some controversy over that McDonald's ad, with claims that they'd basically lifted their whole 'Top Tips' campaign from Viz? And I bet if I asked you which Beatle appeared in a lager ad, it would take you more than four guesses to get the right one.
Anyway, the Pink Windmill Challenge is on again, and I'm confident of more than one. I really can't believe I'm still stumbling across these.

Community Service Announcements were a way to give charities, community groups, and voluntary organisations some publicity. The individual ITV companies made them, usually for free - so, like ITV being a network of independent companies - they became a thing of the past in the early 2000s.

Oh, right - thanks very much for that explanation. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that I just don't remember seeing any back then! Obviously they must have been there, but I automatically tuned them out.

Some regions made a big deal about them, and others didn't. My region growing up, UTV, were big on them from the late 80s, and kept with them after others gave up until the late 2000s. Then again, ITV plc hadn't got to them - yet. Interesting that the one on here is from the Granada region, yet has no Granada branding whatsoever - from time to time, they'd be branded as 'Granada Action'.

@@VideotapeFTW He's right. From time to time these little infomercial things would occasionally pop up and give details about local organisations that can help others. Though sometimes they could be in five minute program form, such as "Your Shout" a local 5 minute infomercial for London produced by Carlton that aired in London quite often during the 90's, that briefly discussed issues in regard to Londoners.

@@ColmORourke1981 @David315842 That's interesting - it looks like UTV, Granada, and Carlton were all big on these, yet I don't remember ever seeing anything like them in the Central region (where I was at the time). It must be a blind spot in my memory.

What is the name of the voiceover in the Robocop ad? I've heard him in tons of 90s toy ads, including the famous Stretch Armstrong one.

Last month you had your doubts about making another compilation, this month you've made another compilation. :D But I'm glad you did. :) Maybe McDonald's and Viz settled out of court, or it was finally seen as a coincidence? It's ALWAYS nice seeing old video game and computer ads in these compilations. Of course, it doesn't bother me seeing other ads like the advert for Carlsberg which is now seen as 'probably the best pilsner in the world' now? :D

I'll be honest, after the last one I thought I'd have one more go and create one with no kids' ads in it, just to see how popular that would be as a concept. So I did, and then I watched it back, and I realised how unbelievably boring it was! In the end, never one to waste anything, I kept the more interesting parts of it, and interspersed that with the more usual fare, and it turned out much better. Glad you enjoyed it! :-) According to Wikipedia, Viz and McDonald's settled out of court with a donation to charity, which implies to me that there was a case to answer and they knew it, but were never going to admit it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viz_(comics)#McDonald's

@@VideotapeFTW I think the key ingredient here is variety and not of the Kellogg's kind. :D But seriously though having a mixture of different ads could help keep interest. That is interesting, I actually had no idea about this case, but like you said, there must have been one if they had settled out of court. Still, naughty, naughty McDonald's UK. I wouldn't be surprised if Viz parodied this whole thing in their magazines, in a similar fashion to The Simpsons poking fun of McDonald's and their near 1984 disaster that was their Olympic promotion. :D

@@David315842 Yeah, Viz being Viz, I think they concentrated more on ridicule and outright abuse than the actual legal side of things. It was quite a victory in the end for them to get anything out of McDonald's.

Can you describe that Bernard Matthews one, please? I do have a few of those, but I'm not sure whether that includes the one you mean.

@@VideotapeFTW Well, I'm pretty sure it's 'Bernard Matthews' as it involves the word 'Bootiful!' - in this advert a class goes on a trip to observe some giant models of dinosaurs (outdoors, I believe), the teacher states that no-one has actually seen a dinosaur, but one of the boys says that he has. The teacher asks where. Boy replies, "In the supermarket, Miss. And I've tasted them." We then see a scene with him eating at these 'turkey dinosaurs'. Finally, the teacher states "Turkey dinosaurs indeed. Whatever next?" Then a dinosaur on the packet says "Bootiful"

@NK-tl3mn Hmm, I don't think I've got that - sorry. I think I've got a Bernard Matthews one where there's a bunch of kids at a farm, and I thought you might have meant that one, but it doesn't look like it. I'll keep looking.
