I recently saw a review of the EverDrive X5 which stated it played all games. Wrong. It also stated many other incorrect facts.
In this video you will find out just what the EverDrive can and can't do.
Enjoy!

The Yamaha sound chip in the Master System is different than the one in the Mega Drive/Genesis. While both are FM, they use different channels and operators. That is why it won't work. (Though my further research shows that it wasn't even included in all Master Systems, and not every game used it. Both the Master System and Mega Drive use a similar PSG sound chip for the square wave and noise sounds, which is why those seem to work. Also of note, the Mega Drive's sound processor is the Z80, which the Master System used a variant as its' main processor. There must be some clever routing going on to get these Master System games to run through it!) Also, the X3 has unlimited writes. Read that chart again. The EverDrive 'V3' which is the knockoff has 100,000.

I also have the previous model Mega Everdrive which, in 2013, was the higher-end version. It's a fantastic product as all the Everdrives seem to be. It's nice to see all the things it can do in this video. The one I have allows save states, but it was considered an experimental feature then and I believe it still is. It worked perfectly in some games, had small glitches in others and had significant glitches in some others. Sound issues upon loading were the most common. It's a nice feature to have, but it's not as reliable as good software emulation. I agree that the X5 is the one that would be ideal for most people based on features and price. Excellent job on the review, Mark.

ravagingwolverine thanks for the input, ravingwolverine. The X7 has the save states although I'm not sure of its quality. I have heard it's perfect but then again I saw another RU-vid video that stated the EverDrive X7 could do things it actually couldn't.

I bought the X3 everdrive for the Gameboy a month ago. A bit expensive, but it's very good quality. Krikzz products are definitely worth it. Better than Chinese cheap crap.

I agree. It's best to buy the original items. The onky one I have that's not original is the Gdemu for Dreamcast. That's because the official one is hard to get. Always having to wait and then you may not by in line for one.

Its worth to people really depends on user's own merits. Some may see the deal that they can have the whole library or only the games they want for that single price tag, since the money you spend on both carts and everdrives just go to another person rather than the people that made the games anyway. I've always wanted MUSHA, but no way in hell am I spending way more than what an everdrive is worth to get a genuine copy for example. Others may not find it worth the money if they can get the games they want in total for less than the Everdrive's worth.

Mark, you had me worried that I made the wrong decision on Black Friday! *lol* I saw the video come up this morning with "Honest Review" as I was getting ready for work, and I didn't have time to watch, and I thought "Oh crud, I missed a crucial detail in my research before buying..." then my friend asked if I had watched your video, THEN my email came confirming the Everdrive shipped today..and now I can can breathe a sigh of relief. *lol* I'm glad I made the right decision :) Thanks for a great video review!
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 7 лет назад
RoryDropkick hahaha, I can imagine the worry because these things are not that cheap. Actually, the honest review part is because there are other videos out there which don't tell the whole truth and don't even mention about the music player or Master System games. Oh, this also plays 32X games. Something I forgot to mention in the video. You will need a 32X of course.

I had the X3 and I was so satisfied that I upgraded to X5 less than a year later, and now the satisfaction has been doubled: Now I can say I have not only a Mega Drive with almost all games, but a full-fledged Master System - in part thanks to the awesome dev and mod scene that are adapting several SMS games which weren't MD compatible back in the day - with almost all its games as well (I have an Everdrive GG, too, as well as a Master Gear adapter). Its only major flaw is that one has to be extra careful to use the pause on the Master System games, as moving the cart causes it to crash like it always happened back in the good ol' times. So far, I have five Everdrives (MD, SNES, GG, NES and GBC) and can't be happier.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 5 лет назад
Yeah, pausing the Master System games via the EverDrive button can be a little nerve wrecking. It would be easy to mod the EverDrive to accept a separate pause switch but then you'd have wires hanging out of it.

I'm really glad you did this video! I've been thinking of getting one (almost grabbed on during Krikzz's Black Friday sale), and this definitely cemented for me that this is the optimal version to grab. Was hoping it supported FM soundtracks for SMS games, but it's a small loss.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 7 лет назад
On the Stick you really should get one. Don't buy a cheap Chinese effort either as they can't be updated and have a reputation for dieing quickly. The X5 in my opinion is the all round best buy. The X7 can do real-time save states and it can rest to the EverDrive menu without having to press the reset button but it almost cost twice as much as the X5.

@@RetroCore How do you get it to work?
@shiru8bit
@shiru8bit 7 лет назад
A bit of nitpicking. The 'Mode 7-like effect, in two layers' in the Overdrive demo has nothing to do with Mode7. It is a very simple raster effect based on vertical scaling. Was used in a few SNES games, including Axelay (no Mode7 there either), and, to a lesser extent, on the Genesis too, for example, in bonus stage of the Sonic 3D Blast, also in two layers.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 7 лет назад
Yes, I know this but most don't which is why I use the term mode 7. Saves a lot of bother explaining things later :p But yes, you are 100% right in saying they are raster effects.
@shiru8bit
@shiru8bit 7 лет назад
Genesis has to do all raster effects with H-blank interrupts or timed code, which is slower and trickier, that's why the effect in question is less common there. SNES has HDMA unit to do raster effects like this easily. And Mode7 is totally different beast, although indeed often used in combination with heavy HDMA use. The point is that this specific effect does not need anything that Mode7 offers, by the very design - it designed around the fact that vertical scaling is easily doable with raster effect, while horizontal scaling (required for perspective correctness) is not doable.
@shiru8bit
@shiru8bit 7 лет назад
Seen it ages ago. Sorry, but that's not 'true Mode7', very far from that. That's very limited, slow low res software renderer of perspective projected tilemap that imitates one particular application of Mode7. Impressive programming and HW trickery, though.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 7 лет назад
ALberto Doriguzzi it sure did. I have a beta build of that game too which I may show off at some point in the future. It has some of the effects missing with strange results.

No, you couldn't download the roms from the web back then. Besides, they hadn't sold any game if you could have used flashcart with all the games in it.
@inputfunny
@inputfunny Год назад
Those special effects probably would take up most of the storage on the cartridge. Keep in mind they were working with 1/2 of a MB of storage and all the way up to 4MB of storage I believe, and yes, MB, not GB. They wouldn't have space for the rest of the game; that was a big limitation of the time and is why most games back then were hard, it's so people wouldn't spend $100+ in today's money adjusted for inflation and then go home and beat their new game in an hour because that's all they could cram on the cartridge. Believe me.
@CircuitBird
@CircuitBird 6 лет назад
Also, the lack of FM sound for Master System is due to the Master system in Japan (and the Mark III) using the Yamaha YM2413 and the Mega Drive using the YM2612 (or the YM3438 in later model 1's and the model 2's).

Game Gear will never be compatible with Mega Drive simply because it was not the same as the Master System. Game Gear was more advanced. Mega Drive's Master System mode doesn't feature the correct hardware to run it. Game Gear could play Master System games though. Everdrive X7 now has Master System FM emulation.
@SilverSonic1992
@SilverSonic1992 6 лет назад
The Game Gear is actually very similar to the Master System hardware. The main difference that prevents it from working normally is the color palette. The Game Gear has a much bigger color palette, even bigger than the Genesis. The Master System's VDP can't display it and thus they don't run normally.

The development of these type of cartridges is excellent and promises a lot of things for example, game developers can make games at low cost in digital format and with effects and graphics better than the original library, also later cartridges designs could be connected to the internet with a WIFI adapter integrated and possibly we could download games trough a platform like steam or other private or public server, a truly 16 bit era revival, and using the real original hardware.

@CaptainKeelhaul
@CaptainKeelhaul 7 лет назад
The save state feature is great, but far from perfect. Many games glitch out after loading a save state, from missing music to completely glitched graphics. I think this has to do with the X7/v2 not being able to dump the entire memory like an emulator but has to read the states from several places.
@justsomeguy8385
@justsomeguy8385 6 лет назад
Save states are always welcome, but definitely not a good reason to get an X7. As CaptainKeelhaul said, it's really a mixed bag when it comes to how well the save state works for each game. Most likely if you're getting an Everdrive it's because you want the original Genesis experience without the hassle and expense of collecting games for it, otherwise you would just emulate. Save states are just not part of the original experience. And let's be real, most genesis games were meant to be played over and over until you could easily complete it in one sitting. They are short games and were designed with that in mind. I would say the most compelling reason for the average user to get an X7 over an X5 is the most recent update that allows the X7 to utilize the Master System's FM sound. Maybe that's still not good enough a reason to pay double the price, but certainly a far better one than a dodgy save state feature.

Hey, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to old school console gaming, I'd really love it for someone to explain in more detail the difference between the saving capabilities of the x5 vs x7 because I don't really understand. I'm thinking of getting the x5 for my dad for his birthday just because all of these games would be kick ass but I think the ability to save where he is would be absolutely perfect for him as he doesn't have hours and hours for complete play throughs due to work. What is the nature of X5 game saving? Please and thank you! :D
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 7 лет назад
Hey, that's nicee you are buying such a device for your father. Hope my son does stuff like that when he's older. Okay, the difference between saving. Well, both the X5 and X7 can save games like any regular game cartridge with battery back up but the X7 has another type of save k ow as "save state". What this means is that no matter what type of game you are playing you can save your exact position then come back another day and pick up where you left off. So imagine playing a normal VS fighter and reaching the final boss but suddenly you had to go out. In any normal circumstance you'd have to switch off the game and start again even when using the original game cartridge. With the X7 though, you can basically freeze the game at the final boss battle and save that state. Next time you want to play you would load up that save state which in essence will basically unfreeze the game so you can continue playing.
@jwootton999
@jwootton999 7 лет назад
Save state sounds perfect for him to be honest, that's exactly what he needs. How does 'game saves' work in comparison to that for something like sonic 2 with no game saving feature? (as you can see, whilst I am a dutiful son buying my father something he'll love, I'd like to avoid spending double the money if I can :P)
@RetroCore

It should work just fine. Save halfway through a level then pick up right were you left off at another time. It works the same way an emulator would work to be honest.

They're from different FM chip series, totally not compatible. It is possible to make an imitation and a wrapper for OPLL data to be player on OPN, but it needs smart converter, something in-between (MCU or something), and as far as I remember, YM2612 is not accessible in the Master System mode. In that case on-cart OPLL emulator is the only option then, which takes a good deal of programmable logic.
