I think this show and Mama's Family are my favorites. I love the Catholic atmosphere of this show and especially this episode, reminds me of my upbringing and was very rare on TV. If religion was ever mentioned at all, the characters were always protestants.
The '80s were a weird time in which a lot of people were obsessed with their weight, often for superficial reasons. Today some people still obsess, but for health reasons. Plus some people are just cruel, in both scenarios. The important thing is for people to decide what works for themselves.
Good to see Hooter the dog get some well-deserved screen time. I cracked up when he came running out of nowhere to retrieve the candy bar Coach threw away!!
I totally felt for Graham and Cindy. When I had double jaw surgery and my jaw was wired shut for a year I had to watch my family eat all this good food in front of me while I lived off of broth. Now I do have to control my weight as once I was healed I started eating like crazy. But yeah I could relate to those two. On another note I loved seeing Cindy and Graham bond with each other.
Cindy being called fat makes me a little angry, now. Then I remember how nuts we were in the 80s - I was a size 10 and called ‘fat’. I think it’s a sign of some great change as a society that we a cognisant of normal sized persons. I can’t help but think that if JTTOU was rebooted, that like... Graham would be gender switched as a woman who was accidentally hired to coach high school football? Elizabeth would be a stay at home dad. The kids would be biological and otherwise, and in this episode ‘Graham’ would be considering bariatric surgery.
For any people out there who are wondering what Graham meant when he said "after the twins were born", he was referring to Wendy and Cindy. Some people forget that they are twins.
The Mr. Belvedere joke has another thing in it. Christopher Hewett played that role as well as Roger Debris in the original film of The Producers, where he wore a dress as well!
The place Graham stops at to get the Boston Cream Pie will be seen again in the episode where Wendy dates that store robber. He tries to rob this store and the clerk is the same guy. Also, the name of the store is called Stop N Run, which was originally used in a Growing Pains episode with this same actor playing a role there!
@@erinkyle4485 I didn't see that. Have to check it out. I love Coach asking if that was lightning to distract the family. Must've been a window up there he was pointing to.
@@erinkyle4485 Oh, it's at the very end of the scene. Never noticed that before, because I'm watching Coach's reaction there. He was caught trying to throw the food away. And I thought you meant her own tripe as well.
Was Cindy humming the theme song? I think even though she's presented as dim. Cindy knows her world is a sitcom. She knows she and her family are TV characters.
Why do y'all think Cindy was deemed the "fat" sister? I have 3 ideas: 1) One girl MUST have an obligatory "weight issue" as a trope for any tv show. 2) Compared to her waifish sisters, Cindy is substantially bigger. So Cindy is labeled "fat" because she exceeds the norm. 3) (I think this ties in with the theme of Cindy being a dim bulb) ... the other girls tell Cindy she is fat (girls are just mean), because they know it bothers her, and they want to see her squirm. And Cindy believes them, because she doesn't have the introspection to rebuff their claims.
Did anyone else see Cindy poke the tripe with her silverware to see if it was still alive I thought that was hilarious 😆 lol. Also the guy who did the weight loss meeting, his voice especially reminds me of the school teacher from the original willy Wonka and the chocolate factory. Not sure if any relation I can't really tell but his voice is spot on. I loved this episode anyone whos ever diet before knows exactly how Cindy and Gram felt at least at some point in their diet. And Cindy definitely didn't need to diet I would love to look like her!
Watched this when I was a kid (before the "sexy librarian" look caught my attention). Marie, in her button up sweater and paid skirt, really nailed the librarian theme. HOT!
I just noticed in the food locker these blue containers. I think they were also used in Who Cut the Cheese? And I was hoping to see that Cheese Wheel in the food locker as well.
in the American 80s 4.8% of men were obese and 7.9% of women. Today it's 37.9 and 41.1%. So, of course BK doesn't look as big to us today as he may have to people back then.
It's so funny now to hear the random Donald Trump jokes. A friend went to Weight Watchers before her wedding, the teacher told them that she didn't care about how many carrot sticks they ate because the carrot sticks were never the problem.
This episode that you had up for awhile is how I found your channel lol I wonder how 18 year old Jamie Luner felt about this script?. I never understood the fat jokes with her. She’s gorgeous and still is...But it seems she did lose a little weight afterwards.. I’ve been watching Bill Kirchenbauer’s walking videos of Thailand and Singapore. Asian cuisine really agrees with him. He looks great and healthy! Lol. Yeah I agree, too much fruit with your oatmeal isn’t the problem it would be a solution 🤣
I've been meaning to say this, but in the third season they added all those pictures of the family on the wall there. That wasn't there in the earlier seasons.
I know that film Stay Tuned. It's not bad, but not a great film. I thought it was too sitcomy myself. And it wasn't a big hit when it came out. But RIP to John Ritter, a talent.
I just realized that in earlier episodes, there were mentions of the girls dieting. Remember in Dream Girls Graham says it. So this isn't the first time anyone here dieted.
You didn't mention this, but here it is. The scene involving Graham and the kid wouldn't work today because no kid is going to talk to a stranger that bribes them. It was still funny how he had the picture of Graham (same one Ice Cream Guy had).
I see what you thought was funny. I thought what was interesting about that moment was that Graham raised his hand because he figured the teacher was expecting an answer from a member of the group, but the teacher was really being rhetoric.
You know, I didn't even notice you waving your hand around until you had mentioned it, so I went back to finally look at it. I could see the moth you mentioned there. For some reason, I keep thinking of that owl in Voice of God, which I believe could've been God after all.
Didn't get to see this until a few hours into Thursday, but that's okay with me. I have one scene here I hope you talked about. I'll bring it up after watching the episode.
Jamie Luner was "thicker" (in a good way) than the other three and she's tall, which probably lent itself to the "Cindy is fat" jokes. Compared to the very first JTTOU episodes to the latter ones, you could see her babyfat melting off, and by the time she resurfaced years later on Melrose Place and Savannah, Jamie was thin and had clearly settled into her grown woman body.
I think she was 16 when joining the show...so it makes sense. I always figured it was her 80s hair and the layered blazers that made her look 'thicker'
She was the youngest out of the bunch and was the closest to her actual age on the show so that definitely makes sense. She’s so gorgeous that it still leaves me scratching me head 🤔🤣 but I remember in HS, so many beautiful girls was always saying they were fat and needed to diet and I’m thinking “why? You’re beautiful!” So it is realistic for a very pretty girl in her teens to still feel self conscious.
