Back in Japan! The first episode is all about checking out what this store looks like (Lucky Cat Treasure Store, Otakara Soko) now 3-4 years later. What are the prices today? Are lots of retro games to be found still? Or are the games actually disappearing from their shelves? A rumor I recently heard. Is it true?
Looking at tons of Super Famicom games, N64, Gameboy, Neo Geo AES, Famicom, PlayStation and more.
Enjoy the video!

8:34, that near $70 US boxed copy of Parodius Da! right under the boxed Super Metroid is a bit steep, that's usually the price for Gokujo Parodius (my boxed copy ran me $60 a few years back, but I bought it from a friend who was getting out of collecting), and less than a copy of Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius. I bought a loose cart online of Da! SFC a few years ago for under $20. Earlier in the video was a near $90 boxed Wai Wai World 2, a game I also got a few years back loose, for around $20. There are some games at this shop that are a bit overpriced sadly.

Good variety at that store from the looks of it. Retro games are still here in Japan, you just have to go where the tourists aren't going, which in a way makes it more fun because you'll probably go to some area that you probably wouldn't have gone to if not trying to find a random Hard/Book-Off in the middle of nowhere, haha.
@RetroMoments
@RetroMoments Год назад
Yea its great. Its just that there were so much more 4 years ago! Right, exactly! Ive gone to a couple of Hard Off’s and Books Off’s in the middle of nowhere. So theres definitely videos coming from those places. Glad to see you in the comments, Mike!
@ericng5707
@ericng5707 Год назад
You can avoid the tourist spots that have the highest markups, but the overall market has been pushing prices up so even the lesser-known regional chains like Otakara Soko will have higher prices. Another thing to remember is that the yen is much weaker now compared to a few years ago, so the exchange rate and the duty-free tax discount gives an illusion that prices are still reasonable.
@Jeffplays-rr5ly
@Jeffplays-rr5ly Год назад
It is really sad that I went to Japan recently and several book offs and hard-offs had small collections of gameboy games(or were extremely overpriced), one of the book off stores had 6 loose gameboy cartridges. Hoping something would reduce the prices soon.
@Jeffplays-rr5ly
@Jeffplays-rr5ly Год назад
This was Osaka and some parts of Tokyo.
@RetroMoments
@RetroMoments Год назад
Right! I think because their inventory is so much smaller nowadays, they shoot up the prices. People are buying their stuff too fast. I see the same problem. I go to a Book Off and they Will have a few loose Game Boy games and like 3 boxed ones. Thats it. So sad.
@Jeffplays-rr5ly

@@RetroMoments I'm hoping to go to Nagoya the next time I visit Japan. I saw a lot of good prices in the stores that you visit and still haven't been to Nagoya. I expected the prices to be okay in Osaka(slightly better but still tiny amounts of cartridges available) and very small numbers in Tokyo.

I was just in Nagoya in May and I can't believe I didn't know about this place! My trip started in Osaka then Kyoto, Nagoya, and Tokyo. By far the best selection of games and consoles was in Osaka. Because I didn't want to lug around 2 giant suitcases the whole trip I waited until Tokyo to buy the majority of the big stuff. I ended up getting a Gen2 Famicom, Super Famicom, and N64 - all in boxes. I would have paid less and gotten better condition boxes earlier in the trip since I found it surprisingly hard to find them in Tokyo. Akihabara especially felt kind of picked over. And I want to say, do not buy the IPS 8Bit Pocket - it worked all of one time. A total waste of 10,000 yen. Great video - makes me miss the island already.
@RetroMoments

Yea, its definitely one of the lesser known stores here. Great route! Visiting all the interesting cities. I totally get it. So many times I jumped something to buy, only then realizing I shouldve bought it. Akihabara is definitely picked over. I was there recently too and was shocked with how empty the shelves are. Its just Super Potato that still have stuff. Thanks man! Hope you get to come back soon again! More videos to come in a few days!

@@RetroMoments also I suspect that when you can get x,y and z in mint condition, some of that "specialty" of owning it is lost (...duh). Like if we could get mint and boxed nes,snes,n64 games for cheap here in west I suspect a large part of collectors wouldnt even get them. and I got some evidence for it ofc, I mean I remember here in Sweden at stores them selling gamecube games on insane sales during the wii/360 era YET NOBODY BOUGHT THEM, I found skies of arcadia and fire emblem for like 50-100 kr and never sold out for over a year at the store. but then scalpers realized the value of rarity and cleaned stores. But let say I could find these games again all over the place, would people pick them up? probably not, since they didnt until it had a monetary value and scarcity - which makes me suspect japanese gamers realize digitally is better for them personally since they can collect physically anyway if they really wanted.

Man, I was in Japan 10 days ago, I do hunting at Hardoffs & bookoffs just like you, I focus on Tokyo outskirts areas, I once did Sapporo , I don't do videos like you, It's more personal to me, I could swear you are right, the good deals & really rare stuff are fading out, I can notice it because I did couple of tours before this last one, I feel it the most with PS1 games & consoles in general. Love this hoppy & I love the fact that there are people like me from the world are doing it too, I just don't wish that too many people start doing it because then games will disappear even more quickly hahaha and some empty collectors are really doing it in a harming way, they collect everything even stuff that they don't have personal memories with (for flipping I guess 😡), stupid. keep up the good hunt, give consoles more focus please. Thanks

to chime in on this topic: I do think that to some extend Japanese retro games are disappearing from the local market. Since foreign collectors and also players do not usually sell them back to the stores or other Japanese people for obvious reasons. not as extreme as portrayed by some on the internet but there is some impact. I'd think that during Corona a lot of ppl probably also sold off their stuff due to financial reasons which might have helped the shops to stock on games. due to time limitation (I was in Japan for 3 weeks and came back last Friday) I was limited to visiting Akihabara and Osaka Dendentown only :/ which was quite a letdown.... prices have gone up high since my last visit in 2018 and due to Corona I guess. Japan opening it's borders to all tourists probably also had an additional impact. The high end and sought after games were extremely expensive.. What also shocked me (at least for PC Engine and Saturn) was that a lot of low to mid level games that cost likd 2000-5000 Yen where now between 10.000 to 30.000 Yen....crazy... not to talk about the Neo Geo - those prices were outright bs... also that fresh and retro feeling when you enter the shops went somewhat missing with 99% of the people inside being tourists ^^ only Japanese I saw at Potato and Trader where the sales clerks xD I kept asking myself each time whether I am visiting Tokyo or Paris xD

So the collectors are comming. I dont like that. This "investment" mentality. To buy just for the investment and driving prices up. Its strange cause there are millions auf retro games in japan, the prices should stay stable.
@retrogames_jp1404
@retrogames_jp1404 Год назад
@@accountname8819 well the Japanese shops and Japanese people aren't stupid. They see what a lot of people are willing to pay so they are selling out everything to either wealthy Japanese collectors or like in many cases to foreigners who are willing to pay the prices. it also heavily depends on the game system and the specific titles. Games that were sold in the millions are often the popular titles on each system. Niche games, niche game systems or games that had a smaller release are usually hit the hardest by the price spikes. and ofc there are also those games who noone seems to be really interested in but get nevertheless a price "upgrade"... an often used method is also raising prices of a certain title once a copy has sold. Surugaya and Mandarake love to do that.... short anecdote: a friend of mine bought a mint Eliminate Down for Mega Drive at Mandarake Osaka for 1000$. Next to it was a 2nd copy with a slight sunfade for 900$. When we went back to the store a couple of days later, that exact sunfaded copy of Eliminate Down had a new price tag of 1100$. that's how it works....

11,800 yen for Metal Slug for the Saturn, yikes! I still remember buying it off someone from a forum a decade or so ago, $10. 5:04 That beautiful boxed copy of Puyo Puyo Sun for N64, I have the Saturn and PS1 versions (I still lack the GBC one), and if I had an N64, Sun would definitely be in that system's collection. But it's tough collecting for NES/FC, SNES/SFC, Genesis/MD, Game Boy, some PS2, a little PC Engine CD (No console to run the 4 games I have, so I run the legit discs in emulator), PS1, and Saturn. I have a PSP and a DS, as well as a Wii, but I don't collect for say for those, though the PSP has stuff I do want. As I said in another video, those games behind glass don't tend to be rare, few are. Those games that are stupidly high priced are the games most sought after by collectors, myself included, but I won't break the bank to pay the ridiculous prices those same games go for online. I have managed to get at least 2 Saturn games that were horribly expensive then, for a mere $20 a pop, a middle of the night start of a buy it now Elevator Action Returns, and a manual less buy it now Kingdom Grandprix. Rare would be something like the Gold Punchout FC carts, or Tetris on the Mega Drive, both don't have a ton of carts made. Stuff like Mizubaku Daibouken on Saturn, aka Liquid Kids, from Taito, those didn't really see a high print run, probably why the game fetches up to $1,000, yes 1 grand in price, for copies. A friend snagged one for me from a French seller over a decade ago for $75, complete with spinecard.
