( www.alltfl.com/ ) Check out our new spot to find ALL our content, from news to videos and our podcasts! Fiat returned to the U.S. market in the 2010s with the gas-powered 500 hatchback followed by an all-electric 500e. At a time when electric cars were just starting to make their way onto the market, this all-electric Fiat promised fun styling with zero-emissions peace of mind, but how well did it actually work in the real world? Roman takes a step back to look at the now-departed Fiat 500e in this retro review!

I had this exact car as my first electric car. Range was not ideal for most commutes. But if you were commuting close to home. It was cheap, fun and totally worth it! The gauge cluster was my absolute favorite. Also the four bars on the dash to show state of charge at a glance should be on more cars these days. I fit two infant car seats in that back if you’ll believe it. 😅

I have one I bought 5 years ago, a 2014 for $6k. Same color scheme. It has 68k miles now, and still runs like when I got it. I haven't noticed any battery degradation. At this point it's paid for itself, no maintenance has been required, no smog checks, no oil changes, not even brakes (mostly uses regen braking). People say EVs eat tires but I haven't noticed a difference. All in all a great 2nd car for around town if you can charge at home. I charge using an electric dryer outlet (220v) and it charges from 0-100 in about 8 hrs. And yes it really is fun to drive, it does 0-30 in 3.1 sec. A Porsche Boxster from 2014 does 0-30 in 2.4 sec. It feels quick around town. People comment on it constantly, it makes people smile, just like the original Cinquecento.

Mine is almost identical to yours, same millage even. Bought it five years ago for 7k. Been driving it on the freeway for my 30-mile work commute. It is my daily driver and love it!

I own the same one in France. It's one from 2016 that I imported in 2019. It is rare in France and therefore it is my collector's car that I drive on weekends in good weather. I love my little Californian 500.

We have a 2017 sitting in our garage right now. I bought it used for $8500 in 2019. My daughter uses it.

This is the perfect city car if 95% of your driving is within a 30 mile bubble. The Bosch designed liquid cooled battery pack has held up well. I have 2014 I bought used and still love it. Can't beat it parking in the city.

I owned a white 500e with the red sport package. The charm is very real and so is the range anxiety 😮 I truly miss the car and I did actually get 126 miles one time driving it.

I still have a 2013 fiat 500e with 109592 miles on the clock. Battery still gets me around 80-90 miles of range to and from work. Bought it used a couple months back for 3.5k

I have one it’s my third EV and I’ve had them all a Tesla, eGolf, etc and I think it’s the best EV despite the lower range. The new one I’d imagine with its fast charging and 150 mile range is going to be a great ev, really the best for most people. I know that even after 10 years the battery is still great on mine, with the same range nearly and that’s with 80,000 miles now. Everything else has been super reliable and cheap most importantly. How many EV’s can you say the same that are that old that have held up the same? You really can’t. The Fiat 500 is a fun, cool quick little machine that in my opinion does nearly everything right. The styling is really the best in the business when it comes to an ev.

Roman, the reason for the FIAT 500e is not that the government forced FIAT to sell them, at least not directly. Two reasons: US EPA fleet mileage standards and California had a 1 percent rule, that meant 1 percent of all cars sold have to be zero emissions (hydrogen or natural gas also counted under the original rule). FIAT sold these cars at a loss so they could sell large gas guzzlers for a huge profit

I like the Fiat 500. It’s very cute like the Mini. I just wish Fiat brought over the Tipo for volume sales because this 500 is just too niche.

They'll also need good crossovers in every possible segment if they want to survive in North America. The 500L was meh, the 500X like the Renegade isn't great.

I miss this car so much and as said in the video, the 0-30 was pretty dang quick. I once pulled up next to a lambo on a red and told him to floor it and as soon as the light turned green we both launched and I had him for the first 20ish miles and when stopped at the next light he was laughing cause he didnt expect the launch to go like that😂. The range really sucked but I was happy while it had full charge

I had a gray 2013 with white mirrors and white seats with orange accents. They had a Tom Tom sat nav that plugged into a special socket on top of the dash. I like the newer version that is integrated into the dash. I stopped using the Tom Tom because it would annoyingly beep at me when I went over the speed limit and it was easier to just use the gps nav in my phone

I've always wondered: is there a method to hack in additional battery, essentially making me second battery pack that sits in the rear luggage compartment and doubles the range?
@RichardLin
@RichardLin Месяц назад
It wouldn’t be feasible. The original battery takes up a large portion of the bottom of the car the full length. To double the range, even if you gave up the trunk and rear seats it wouldn’t happen.
@kenmcclow8963
@kenmcclow8963 Месяц назад
The original battery was 600 pounds and I’m sure someone could build a replacement with far more range in the same package. The 500e had the Abarth rear suspension to handle the weight. Nissan upgraded their battery several times and more than doubled the original car’s range in the same battery package. The problem with the 2013-2019 Fiat is no ability to fast charge, so it’s four hours on a level 2 if you drain it. That’s why my longest trip from home was 57 miles to the airport
@Ryukachoo
@Ryukachoo Месяц назад
@@kenmcclow8963 only 600 lbs? Less than I thought but that's still a good amount of mass to work around. That's 10x Tesla model S modules which gets you 53 kwh, more than double the original capacity for the same weight

See if it honestly got 86 miles that would be fine for me because all my local driving around town never exceeds that for the week.
@omniphoriusvcf907
@omniphoriusvcf907 Месяц назад
It all depends on your speed. I have one, around town I exceed that range. On the freeway much less.
@jon199680
@jon199680 Месяц назад
I still have one, and I love it! But I never trust it to go more than 25 miles one way on a full charge. Because if it's cold, that affects the range. If it's all uphill, that affects the range.
@sab0nes
@sab0nes Месяц назад
Same. I use mine for the commute to work I usually charge at work, can do my errands and make it home then back to work in the morning. When it's cold I have to charge a bit every night

I believe that’s a 2016 or 2017, not 2013. I have the exact model. Same color. Same interior. Crazy! Love it. The screen in the car came into the Fiat 500e in 2016. Before that, there was a plug-in Tom Tom on the dash. Only minus is DC fast charging. It charges 6.6kwh via level 2. From dead, 4 hours. But, thermal managed battery! Very cheap to own. I believe it was 84, not 87 miles of range. It’s relative. .31 cd drag coefficient. 0-60 7 seconds.

Original 500e: 7.2 kW/hr level 2 = fastest; no DCFC. Many of the other early compliance cars were 3.3 kW/h level 2, a couple with ‘fastCharging’.

I loved my 500E. I wish I still had it. but yes the range was an issue. Even in the new one the range is... I know it is suppose to be a 'city car' but I guess I was hoping for a little more. Maybe they will electrify the 500x and I will get the range I want.

This was and is my first EV. Still getting about 80 miles per charge mostly commuting to work and back it sucks relying on public charging on the weekends but its cheap to operate and free for me i charge at work for free. Still get lots of questions about it in 2024 lots of stares. I am about $800 from payong it off. Eventually will get a Tesla or Ioniq for more range but i decided a few months ago ill never sell my Fiat 500e its a good car for 95% of my driving. When thus one eventually dies ill by another one from this generation unless the new gens get cheap enough. Best feature is the parking with ultrasonic sensors (Tesla doesnt have them anymore) where i live people park like a-holes but i can almost always squeeze in spots

No one should buy this car and if you do, don't pay more than $5-6k for it. Anything over is an absolute waste of money. It's not that fun, it's not that quick. You are going to charge 100% at home (and it does well on an L1) but the lack of fast charging trips up newbies. The head units like to die and the humidity sensor likes to go bad and tank range. Fiat would rather buy it back than fix it, so you better buy that repair manual (a literal CD, so a disc drive too...) and maybe a donor vehicle to keep it running without bankrupting your parts budget.

The same guy who keeps touting all of the EV rebates he gets from the federal government and the State of Colorado government now in this video complains that "government regulations are unfair". Hypocrisy much?
