So you think your brush skills are up to scratch? Well tonight we dive headfirst into a realm of horror, dread, and terror as we attempt to do the one thing miniature painters truly fear...freehanding! In this third episode of my Cult of the Possessed series, I give my chaotic hooligans a fell standard to rally behind as they continue to lay waste to the streets of Mordheim. Let the freehanding begin!

Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked the end result. Haha I’m still a beginner but I’m working on expanding my skill set. Doing a project based off medieval “woodcut” art I think is a great beginner level course for those getting into freehanding. Anyway, thank you again for the kind words 🤘🏻🤘🏻

A trick for free hands is to do the freehand on a computer to start with, and then print it to paper using a 600 dpi laser printer. Using tracing paper you can then transfer the outline quickly and repeatably to a primed foil banner or whatever you're using.

That's a solid trick as well. Sadly I don't own a laser printer.

Glad you like the series, and yes I definitely will be continuing it! The next faction will definitely be Witch Hunters. However, I do intend to explore some of the community created factions from Broheim.net.

As someone who dipped their toes into freehanding last year, I have two tips for people new to the technique: 1) If you can, try painting your banners separately, before attaching them to the model. Depending on the sculpt and the banner material, it can be easier to just lay the banner flat and paint it that way. Rather than have parts of the model get in the way of painting. 2) You aren't obligated to start freehanding on the final piece. Practice the design (or designs) beforehand, before you commit. A good way to do this is by coating something like an index card with brush-on primer, then drawing lines on in the shape of the intended size of your "canvas". Then just paint it over and over, until you figure out your process or the final design. It's a lot more work up front, but it'll save you headaches on the "real" freehand later.

This series has been amazing!!! I just stumbled upon it and your channel by accident, and I couldn't be happier! I wanted to make a witch hunter warband, but this series has wholeheartedly convinced me to do the cult of the possessed instead! But yeah, excellent work on this series, and I cannot wait to see more of your work in the future!

That's what I like to see! Need to do one of my own down the line, though I can never settle on a design so I mostly end up doing just some basic shapes and heraldry

You totally should! It also sounds like you have a head start having already done basic shapes / designs. Even if the model isn’t for anything in particular like an army or warband, give it a go anyway! You’ll grow your skill and have a cool miniature to show off.

Funny story, my friend collects skaven for fantasy and aos and hes a really good painter. I am a pretty decent pen on paper artist, combined we have freehanded over 67 minis including extra details, banners, pauldrons and decoration. You used the exact steps we do 😁
