The first time you saw me fly fishing on the channel here was June 2019. It was short jaunt on the Quinnipiac River throwing streamers and I managed one brook trout before packing it in. I had never filmed before. I felt awkward narrating, so much so that I had overdub to add sufficient context. I didn't have the wherewithal to get sufficient b-roll. It was seriously tough trying to juggle the demands of filming along with those of fishing. It was my crash course in making YT fishing vids.
Well, June of 2021 marked the two-year anniversary of the channel's launch and I thought it would be fun to celebrate by heading back to the very same stretch of the Quinnipiac. I made nearly 60 videos over the intervening two years and I think it shows. I'm better able to manage fishing and filming at the same time, much more comfortable narrating, and I'd like to think I'm at least a bit better trout angler, too.
NOTE: This footage has been queued up for editing for quite a while, which is why you're just seeing it now in September, about 3 months after it was filmed. What can I say? Given limited time, I'll admit that editing is usually what gets cut in favor of more fishing!

Great video. Typically fish the north east or northwest part of the state. The Quinnipiac is right up the road from me and appears to be a quality fishery. Just getting caught up on your channel. Thank you.

The Quinni in this section is definitely fun, though it’s very dependent on stockers. So springtime through June is generally pretty fruitful, but harvest and hot weather conspire to clean them out by July oftentimes. There ARE wild brookies in that section too, but in my experience, they’re not really numerous enough to warrant targeting them specifically.

I waded the Quinnipiac in Wallingford this year. Caught a few rainbows, redbreast sunfish, dink largemouths and small stripers. Just used small crappie magnet jigs. Fun little trips.

If your willing to walk miles there are great wild trout in the 20"-26" range in the Quinnie. Hint they are nowhere near the stocking areas and much further south than you would think. Prepare for waste deep wading in a foot of stinky muck. It's actually pretty irresponsible exposure, however you have the chance to hook up with some of the biggest wild browns in the state and maybe even a sturgeon 😉.

IMO One of your best trips as far as picking apart pieces of water... Really felt you on leaving that big pool and moving on to new water... Nice job man.

Yeah, I’ve enjoyed fishing this section for a decade or more, even if don’t spend a whole lot of time there most years. Thanks for watching!

Man, I just really love to watch your show. I don’t live in CT anymore, but I do recognize some of those streams. I watched your newest, and you have really mastered the bow and arrow. Line lays out and it always hits were you want it. Please keep up the vids! Love it.

The Quinnipiac seems like one of those CLASSIC new England-style streams, I bet if you fished it 300 years ago it would be full of big brookies and 20 lb Atlantic salmon. Anyways congrats on 2 years.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 года назад
Absolutely. It’s one of those rivers which suffered a fate similar to the Naugatuck… sort of a sacrificial waterway for early industry which never quite had the opportunity to bounce back. When I was a child, my father worked at a factory along the Quinnipiac that still had an old, inoperable waterwheel in the basement, even though use of water power there had concluded long ago. The impoundments left over from that era haven’t done the stream any favors. And if the wild brookies we find further upstream in the Quinni are any indication, it was likely an excellent fishery in its more primeval state.

Justin - great video from the Quinnipiac. Passed by the river many times on the way to Fairfield University. Water is deceivingly clear (one of the underwater releases showed the clarity quite well). Does the walking/bike path run the entire length of the river or just a certain section? If my recollection serves me correctly that path is visible along the Merritt through much of the stretch between Yalesville & New Haven.

This is the Meriden Linear Trail, which I don’t mind pinpointing in this way because it’s very well-known by damn near everyone in the city. If there are trails elsewhere along the Quinnipiac, I’m not personally familiar with them. The parts of the stream that I fish further up in Southington/Cheshire are all bushwhacking.

As a child and teenager, I spent countless hours pond fishing in Cheshire. You ever hit that pond that was up in the woods from Cheshire Park? Used to have largemouth up to 2lbs+ and even bullhead. Went back there last year only to find that somebody busted the fieldstone dam out and the pond is gone now. A little stab in the heart to find that the pond is no more.

This is my after work river, only a few moments from my front door. However, the lower section of the linear trail in Wallingford has some very deep pools and nice runs that are almost impossible to drop in on. Then I look at the satellite of the area and wonder how the waters are along rt 15 are. Have you been down to that stretch of the Quinnipiac? I don’t know what the river floor looks like but it’s another one of those rivers that look real good to explore, but have not talked to one person. Who has taken the time to drop in.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 года назад
Nope, never hit those lower stretches before. Well, maybe a bit when I was a kid, but it’s been a couple decades.😂 I have spent time on the upper stretches well above Meriden though, and those are interesting waters. Big wild browns up there, but it’s TOUGH fishing. Tons of brush so you have to wade, but it’s littered with huge blow downs and there’s big deep pits that force you into the sticks and briar thickets… so the going is slow and tedious and frustrating.
@paulpaul1815
@paulpaul1815 Месяц назад
If you've got the guts south of Wallingford holds huge browns. It's very dangerous wading and you need to spey cast unless you have a kayak. It's an incredibly tough section to fish, you'll lose a ton of flies on underwater dead trees and branches.
@zbrowne7770
@zbrowne7770 Месяц назад
@@paulpaul1815I kayaked from the rest stop on 15 up quite a aways but not till the dam. The river bottom was flat, no structure, no rocks just clay. I didn’t see any sign of life except a few turtles. Maybe I’ll try again.
@paulpaul1815
@paulpaul1815 Месяц назад
@@zbrowne7770 Did you make it to around the Oakdale area? I've had success with big heavy streamers and sinking line basically dredging the bottom. There are some very deep holes around those banks. There a not a ton of fish but some quality ones for sure. Try some big scupins, brown wolly buggers with a gold and some flash in the tail, muddler minnows, salmon flies with barbell eyes etc. Never had luck with fast stripping, playing the bottom with short slow strips and tip play seems to work the best there. The strikes can be tough to identify with the amount of line you'll have out plus the depth.
