@@GFlight.916 Two things that might help: 1. Follow restock PS5 pages on twitter. 2. Make sure to checkout with PayPal if possible. It'll save time because you don't have to enter any info. I know of a couple people who got one using this method.
Im enjoying this game quite a bit. There is one HUGE gameplay mechanic that takes what could be a slog and turns it into nice paced experience with focused exploration. The map shows you the paths forward so instead of roaming around lost, you always know which ways youve gone, could go, and should go depending on your goals. This was a genius move by Housemarque. In fact, the entire map mechanic it so well done, it takes the gameplay from good to great. The one negative, and this seems to be a point of contention with the typical twitter psychos who hate video games and want them to suck for weird spiteful reasons--- why make the main character a charisma-less, ugly, black hole of personality. I dont understand why you would spend so much thought and energy creating such an interesting world and then make the character you spend all your time with so bland and repellent. Its a consequential decision in the overall success of the game. Some people will bounce off Returnal, because there is nothing magnetic about the main character to keep you engaged if the initial gameplay loop doesnt instantly grab you. When you dont care about the main character, the story is often automatically a failure. Its a video game, i dont want to play as my aunt ethel. Otherwise, it seems like a success......so far -- I guess my final grade is still pending, but im enjoying Returnal as an overall experience.
I guess it’s kinda valid saying her character is bad but complaining about her being ugly? Seriously? Not every female character in existence needs to be models.
I am rewatching this a year later, and I can confidently say a lot of the major issues that were present have been fixed! If anyone was iffy about the game due to not having a save function or the game crashing and losing progress the dev team have fixed both of those issues. There's now a suspend cycle function that you can legitimately turn off the PS5 or play another game and then as soon as you load it back up it's right where you left off! Also my game crashed once in a 70hr playthrough and I thought my progress was gone, but nope, was in the exact same room I left off. I strongly recommend people to give this game a try, one of the best games I've ever played.
I just bought this and a PS5. Thank you for posting the update! I was super worried I would only be able to play when I had 2 or 3 hours to do nothing else.
I personally hate rouge like games because for one I never finish the game. I play the same thing over and over and never any sense of progression or accomplishment. I’ll play them occasionally but only at a cheap price tag.
Dude keep trying is all I’m gonna tell you. I got mine but it took me 4 months of refreshing every website possible. Now here’s the best advice I have to give you: buy the bundle to grab a ps5 bunch easier. I bought one with an extra controller (you’re gonna need an extra playing this game).
I'm primarily a PC gamer but the store I work at FINALLY got them so I grabbed one on sight, now I'm 500 dollars in debt :DD CEO of bad financial decisions, me
When you get frustrated at dying, put it down and go play something else. Pick it up the next day. A lot of people will just keep trying for hours or quit the game completely. I used to try the same boss for hours only to beat him in 1 run the next day on dark souls. It works
Same. Finally picked up Nioh and kept dying to paralysis bitch lol Took a break and tried again at night; beat her first try. Sometimes all you need is a break!
Playing this game with the sound on the pulse headphones with the dual sense controller made me go "ok, this is actually next gen." Truly wild experience.
I started the game, paused it after the opening cutscene, drove to Target 20 min before they closed to grab a Pulse headset and havent looked back since. So awesome haha
Nothing about this game is next-gen lol. It uses UE4 so has essentially the same graphical fidelity as the DMC 5 or RE2. It could have easily been on PS4 but sony wants system sellers, which this game isn't.
@@aguajaneta you think the ps4 could keep up with all these particle effects, maintaing a fps constantly close to 60fps and a resolution close to 4k? 🤣 The ps4 could probably play it at 30fps with downgraded visuals, but that defeats the point because the visuals and fps are so important when playing a game of this nature.
@@thisiswhatgarbagelookslike3864 He does lol. It’s just a phrase and even he doesn’t know why, also it’s gone on for so long that for a lot it’d be weird for him not to, and I personally like it so ehh.
The amount of attack variations boss have for each phase is phenomenal...I didn't expect it on that level plus it looks amazing - the patterns, colors just amazing
The video states it quite well - if you enjoy challenging/bullet-hell/rouge-like/action-packed/sci-fi/shooter games than it's definitely worth your money. Further research is always a good thing though :)
@@docmar42011 this is an ignorant reply without realizing the precedent this the increase set. You say "it's just 10$ more." In 10 years, they'll increase the price again and the kids of that generation will say "it's just 10$ more." This cycle can repeat until video games cost as much as a new console while a new console costs as much as an iPhone.
@@TheseEyesSeeDarknessClearly7 not to mention that the reason Sony said they increased their prices is because games are getting more expensive to develop which i highly doubt with Returnal, Sackboy or Destruction All-Stars but at least on that people weren't dumb enough to buy that and Sony realized it was going to fail big time. Also 70 isn't the main price for all of us. Here in Europe it's 80 euros at launch and i've heard people from Canada saying it's 120 or something which is downright ridiculous. I don't understand why that's the case especially because last gen prices were 60 both here and the US.
@@Tcmate05 The thing is that is such a niche genre that I've never played before so I'm not sure if I'll like it. Then paying close to 100$ for something that I might not like. I'll probably just wait for a sale or something.
My tip is something I saw you not doing in the video, especially towards the end. Pick up healing items when you're at full health. There are two health items, Silphium, which heals you, and Silphium Resin, which goes towards upgrading your max HP, and they can both spawn at any time. BUT, when you have full HP, all the restorative pick-ups turn into upgrades, the Resin, even if they've already spawned. You can e it happen if you use a consumable heal while looking at a pick-up, it will immediately transform into a Resin
Can you guys tell me what’s the first stage you’re talking about? I’ve played for like less hours than you guys and I’m sure I’ve done whatever you’re talking about
@@UnsettlingDwarf I recently just reached the red looking area that’s in the vid. Just the beginning though but that boss I first fought was easy asf so idk how others got stuck, guess I got lucky
My first playthrough was like this: *Spends an hour getting out the 1st biome* *Gets to the second* "Damn I died...awesome now I can finally play the damn game"
One year later I'm on Biome 4. As much as I like Returnal, especially its story it's just mentally and physically exhausting. Truthfully I never would have purchased it had I of known it was going to be a brutally difficult Roguelike. The Astronaut is helpful but only to a certain extent. As a man in his mid 40s my reflexes aren't what they used to be.
Not worth 70 dollars I dont see how it is worth that much money if I were you I would have saved that money for a game worth it such as God of war ragnorok
Where can you call and reserve an order? I don’t know any retailer, at least in the states, that had pre-orders after the initial batch. I don’t even know anywhere you can “call.” At best you are ordering online if you in the right spot at the right time.
@@stuartbagley2586 dude there are scalpers with bots auto licking at light speed to sell them back at prices that may as well be a brand new gaming PC you buy
This game is absolute torture. It’s ridiculously hard, and unforgiving. It tells you essentially zero as far as what to do, where to go, and how to get there. Then you die, and the map you just spent 30 minutes learning and memorizing is gone. Brand new map, new enemies, nothing is where it was last time. Then you finally make it to a boss after countless cycles of attempts. What happens? He smacks you right back to the crash site. This game is NOT meant for those who have a habit of rage quitting or smashing remotes. This game is infuriating, and… I love it
@@simpleandjames great game i think it makes you very sweaty when you play getting low health is very very intense as you can get sent back to the starting line if you arent careful
Not rogue like or triple A. Are you drunk? In the video-game industry, AAA (pronounced and sometimes written Triple-A) is an informal classification used to categorize games produced and distributed by a mid-sized or major publisher, which typically have higher development and marketing budgets than other tiers of game. Sony is nothing special.. and they don't have an awesome track record for game development past Everquest pre- 2004.
@@informal_variant I love your attitude. I'm hoping I can get one thus holiday. I'm thankful I was able to snag a Series X but I want both. I have always had every console since I became an adult and started paying for my own crap. When I get one, Demon's Souls is what I want most.
One of the few games where I actually need some opinions before I buy instead of just owning it already or just interested in hearing Gameranx's insight
@@halstonconnally1367 I fucking know right it’s happened once to me and of course it was at the end of a run walk Into the boss fight and it crashed. Sucked. Also got stuck behide a door wouldn’t open
When you finish a biome try back tracking through it to the start. Occasionally new enemies can appear as well as something very creepy watching you from high places. There are a ton of little details that a lot of players will miss and the game is totally ok with letting you miss them but for those that look, you will not be disappointed.
Dejan Lukic well the easiest way to see it without spoiling would be in Crimson waste in the first area, but I’ve found it in over grown forest as well. The scariest moment for me involved revisiting the ship during a run. So if you’re looking around a bit then check the ship too. It’s always got little details in the cockpit and bedroom.
@@useless987 Playable Teaser I think is what it stood for. It was technically a demo, and took place in a small creepy house where you go down a repeating hallway.
I can honestly say this is one of the best and intriguing games I've played in awhile even though I haven't beaten it yet I am very much looking forward to what is to come and highly recommend it to anyone to play
If you haven't look into Risk of Rain 2. Very similar style and it looks great, has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a video game, and endless replayability.
@@vulpinemachine just triggered the first house encounter last night and holy shit dude. The footsteps running around upstairs when you’re in there and then the door slams. Lmaoo I was shitting my pants for like 4 minutes.
“Shoutout to the people who are still trying to get a PS5” Me who is still seeing people sell them for $2,000: *(;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`)* thanks for the shoutout though...love the series
I wasn't sure either until I started playing it and wow...It's good man. It feels good, plays right...Has a nice tension coming up to each room, it's really demanding and you have to really think about everything you're doing. Way way more methodical than most open world games these days that are "stuffed with content"... It strips away everything that would distract you from the task at hand and as a result it feels MORE full rather than empty. It's pretty brilliant.
It's a procedural game, so it's always gonna be empty. Backtracking through the same randomized rooms. Minimal cutscenes/dialogue. So your perception is accurate. If you're looking for a hand-crafted narrative-driven experience, this ain't it.
So you basically have to beat the game before turning the console off? There’s no saving it like at all? It doesn’t even auto-save when you’ve reached a milestone in it, like once you have defeated a boss or anything?
Great game. Bad ending. Seems like put so much effort into the game but almost zero effort into the ending. There could be tons of ways to play around with the alien theme, answer all the questions. Throughout the whole game they are building up tension and the ending either of them only leave you with "wtf that's It?"
My personal GOTY. Absolute 10/10 but you have to be the type of gamer that appreciates roguelike games and permadeath. The fact that you can lose your progress makes the battles so intense!
I know I'm a bit slow to the party, but I played it today for an hour or two and I am totally HOOKED. Roguelikes aren't my type but bullethells surely are. Even on my crappy GTC 1050ti, just like you said the sound effects, the feel, and the general environment of the game really play a major role in selling the game. I'll play through it for now but will leave the alternate endings for when I upgrade my PC to experience it in its full glory. Your before you buy was a tremendous help!
This game broke me, lol. Played for about 25 hours and made the call that roguelikes are just not for me. Great gameplay. Wild story/graphics. If it doesn’t give you an aneurysm, enjoy the ride!
Same. I had heard really hard and I was a bit skeptical. I love games like enter the gungeon but I never got into dark souls and shit. So you can see where my spectrum was at. I bought it though and much like you, I love it. But like gameranx said, runs can just get to long sometimes if you are getting better at the game. I would like maybe a save feature in the future that saves your progress but no matter where you are, you start at the beginning of that level. Not at the beginning of the entire map. Something along those lines.
@@isadoregonzalez3016 i am someone who gets frustrated after dying and that i have to start all over again, but like you i am not into dark souls and all that difficult stuff so would you recommend me this game??
The game now has a suspend run feature. So you can save. I think when it launched they were tasked with promoting the rest mode function on PS5. Luckily, they listened to feedback and you can now save. I truly love this game. Great co op too.
for me its the little things and sheer amount of little details that puts Returnal in the upper echelons of game design. It simply oozes confidence and style with such an ease.
It’s a rougelike, there is a checkpoint half way through. I do think you should be able to resume a run you’re currently in the middle of after playing a different game though.
“Rhoto” eye drops came out with a eye drops for when u stare at screens too long like a phone/video games or watching rv. It’s called “rhoto digi-eye”. Also helps if u like to combine screen time with green time ;)
Definitely thought the same. 3rd person bullet hell will always make me see Nier Automata now. Wonder how much they and the gaming industry as a whole have been influenced by it.
Gotta hand it to you Jake, I’ve watched numerous reviews/previews of this game and yours hands down makes this game sound really exciting and fun. You’re never negative and I appreciate that. I guess I’m just saying no matter what, your advice is above all else the one I listen to the most. Thanks for all your hard work man.
It's super punishing. It is a lot for something you are not sure about. I'd suggest waiting and saving those pennies for something you know you are interested in. There are lots of cool games coming soon. Resident evil village next week 😁
If this game was on Gamepass it would have been so good, like if you dont like the game then just uninstall it and be done with it without paying $70 lol
@@Agentshadowolf if this game was on game pass then all the PlayStation players would be saying "it's ok not a brilliant game" but as its exclusive they are making it sound amazing
I'm just glad i was able to get a PS5. Ive only had it for a little less than a year. I splurged and spent my paycheck at gamestop lol. Took me 6 months to catch up on bills but it was worth it.
Original title :"Returnal- before you buy" youtube translation:" Rückgabe - vor dem Kauf" (refund before the purchase ) Yes this feature works totally fine
I just watched a video and apparently, this game will be included in June ps plus. However , I just realised that it may only be available in USA and not U.K. if it is free in U.K., I’ll deff try it out.
The way I got my ps5 was kinda lucky, I was up at 6 am and got a Twitter notification that target restocked consoles, placed an order and picked it up that same day. Can't believe it's still really hard to get a ps5
Who's hollow? The game is unforgiving, it's definitely a decent game, but not sure it's for me personally. I'm just not into Souls like difficulty games! If there were difficulty options, I'd persist but with limited gaming time, I can't waste hours & hours of running around & not progressing through the campaign!
Returnal is none of the positive words mentioned in this review. I hate it so fn much. In my first two hours of playing, the game really doesn't explain whether or not you're progressing. It becomes pretty apparent that dying is a big part of the game, so don't expect to survive every encounter..The problem is that the RNG mechanic tricks you into the thinking you're progressing, but you're really just playing the same level over and over. Also, having randomlt generated levels doesnt really make sense for a "groundhog day' type story. Zero stars.
@@StallionFernando oh? I’m guessing you didn’t like it. Depending on post game content, you might be right. But if they support it with post game stuff, this’ll be around for a solid little minute. It’s a very intriguing game.

Probably original. You could try and recreate it. It sounds like one of the simple soundwave synth sounds, 4 notes ascending, with a delay[echo] effect.
I would love if you could save mid-cycle so I don't have to sit down for 2-5 hours to make substantial progress and not be afraid to lose hours to progress simply because I had something come up and had to quit mid-cycle, causing all my progress to be lost.
As soon I saw this I clicked on it immediately! I have been super excited for to hear what you guys have to say about it. Love your guys reviews, I check them out before I buy anything!
I hope capcom makes lost planet franchise again. I think that game is more forgiving and probably something I would enjoy more. This is fun don’t get me wrong but it’s like demons souls with restarting from the beginning and no check points.
It turned me off when you said it starts you over with nothing again after you die. Yeah, looks cool but I have zero patients for games like this. Thanks for the review.
Just finished this game, and holy hell it was awesome. I’m glad I took a chance on this game, it was my first roguelike and it was an amazing first impression for that genre and for Housemarque.
Play Hades! Incredible game and as the other comment on this thread said, definitely play Isaac too! Roguelike games and very different to each other but damn they’re very good!
Already finished it. The biggest warning/tip I can give is USE consumables. You can get 3 slots and duplicates do stack up. Also don't be afraid to experiment with parasites and artefacts.
