I love the economy of mine (Averaging 5.4miles/kWh . It has a similar range to me so when I need to stop and grab a coffee that is when I charge it up.

For sub £20k. If you don't want to spend much money, you need a small battery, if you have a small battery, you need best efficiency and recharging speed to allow you to get across the country with minimal delay. There is only one car available that ticks all the boxes. The Classic Ioniq 28kWh. You won't touch any other cheap ev with a barge pole after owning one. Premium SE is the spec to get. The icing on the cake is the sublime driving dynamics. 50/50 weight distribution. 6.2 miles/kWh in Summer with motorway driving ftw.

I was waiting for the Hyundai Ionic to show up and see how you thought it compared to the others, but it never got on the list! I'm shocked! I'm currently looking for a decent second hand ev and the ionic is my fave so far.

THe Leaf has CHAdeMO as the charger. Good luck finding one of these. I just checked in Glasgow and there were 3 available in the whole city.

I bought a 71 plate Jaguar I pace SE amazing car,really fun to drive. With the dealer contributions and a free podpoint home charger it was the same price as the Ioniq5 that I cancelled.Blame Ginny for brainwashing me.

I had a BMW i3 REX for 4+ years (110K+ miles) doing a regular 160+ mile there-and-back motorway commute - the rest of the time was twisty country lanes around where I live. Just a city car? I don’t think so, and yes you can slide the back end out pretty easily even on the standard version 🙂. Fantastic car and with the REX you could drive it like a PHEV for longer journeys - which was handy when I first got it cos the in-journey CCS infrastructure at the time was utter rubbish.

No mention of Ioniq or Zoe, and apart from the Leaf, the mileage ranges you were quoting were what the cars were meant to achieve when new, not after several years and hundreds of charging cycles.

I though the Leaf range given was too optimistic. Surely the original was 85-90 not 120 miles...or did I mishear? The Zoe and Ioniq were glaring omissions.

You might have considerably more choice in around 3 years, or thereabouts, once PCP agreements come to an end. A fair percentage will chop them in to get later, more up to date models. The downside is that EV residuals are holding up strongly....which isn't so good if you're buying. The well known EV only dealers usually have a decent selection....

We were just discussing the other day: do we order a new vehicle in advance of when we can afford it knowing how long the lead times are?! Some interesting points tho' who as a new driver is going to have £19k plus for an e Golf? Admittedly I've been driving for nearly 30 years but forgetting about the fact the EVs didn't exist really, back when I passed my driving test I couldn't afford anything beyond a £5-600 banger and my insurance was nearly twice that so I hardly think it's a good first car.

Exactly. When I passed my test nearly 10 years ago I got myself a Focus for £800, my insurance was £1500. I like the e-Golf but there’s no way I would spend that kind of money on a car with such a poor range and spec.

Aftermarket batteries will be a massive thing soon. I have a Vaxhall Ampera, I was chatting to someone on the Chevy Volt forum, same car, he was rebuilding his battery with new CATL pouches, could triple it’s range, 100 miles or so, not bad for a 2013 PHEV.

Will have to look out for that. Got an Ampera myself. TBF the EV range is still one of the best for PHEVs, which for a car released in 2012 is pretty amazing

I sure hope that what you’re saying is true. I’ve been looking out hopefully for years, trying to find an aftermarket battery for my 2013 Leaf, and all this time I’ve been waiting in vain.

With the early BMW I3 , not all had CCS rapid charging , with early models it was an OPTION so watch out otherwise your limited to slower charge times and make long road trips unworkable. 😉

i got the 2022 i3S and long road trips is still an issue, anything more than 120 km *2 requires planning. to make it worse i live in an apartment so I'm at the mercy of the public fast chargers... if only it had a 50 kWh battery and could charge faster along with a 22 kW AC option (in case the fast charger is being occupied) then i wouldn't bother looking for another EV in 1-2 years time.

The Zoe has better range than most other EV’s. Over the summer I have been getting 4.5 miles per KWh with a range of over 200 to 220miles. Beat that if you can. It’s also a great car to drive

As others have mentioned surprised you didn't mention the Zoe which has one of the best ranges for the earlier cars and as cheap as Leafs. Also worth mentioning the early Leafs and Zoes have the battery lease which you have to factor in.

Welcome look at the second-hand EV market, so thanks for doing this. Great if you did this annually as the market will change. Some feedback. The ranges quoted are a bit inconsistent, with some realistic, some pessimistic and others too optimistic, possibly because you are mixing manufacturer test-lab figures with real world. The real world range of the original Japanese-built Leaf 24 kWh was never 120 miles, and more like 85-90 miles when new. The range that you quote for the e-Golf (185 miles for the 35 kWh) is also too optimistic - it’s more like 130-140 miles real world range. We have a 2012 original Leaf which has done about 20,000 miles and is giving about 65 miles range in the Summer. But it suits almost all of our travel needs. The 2013-onwards Sunderland-built cars had better battery chemistry, and later versions were available with a 30 kWh battery, and then more recently 40 kWh and 62 kWh. But the facelift was lazy, reusing many parts and (like the earlier cars) with no thermal battery management, meaning that battery degradation is higher. Nissan have dropped the ball. You fairly made the point that the list wasn’t comprehensive. I would add the Hyundai Ioniq which is one of the most efficient EVs and, because the batteries are smaller, available at much lower prices than the e-Niro and Kona. A friend regularly uses her iPace for trips from Devon to Surrey and gets about 260-270 miles range, so your 200 miles is a bit harsh.

I've been driving a 1 litre (actually just below) since 2016, group 1 insurance, £20 tax per year and 60-ish mpg..... The thought of selling that to spend £18k on the electric equivalent makes me literally laugh out loud.... It's cheaper to run than an EV and I can't imagine so much would go wrong on such a basic car to justify a £14k price hike..... Electric in such small cars had got a long way to go before being a viable financial consideration.

Sorry but are you guys on this planet, if you buy a 4k leaf it won't have any more 70 mile range it would be more like 30 to 40 and have 100k on the clock and the battery will be out of warranty so if you want to get an upgrade then you'll be looking at 5 to 10k so a 4k car turns out to be 15k, and who can afford to buy a 20k used car and call it the second car run about. When it comes to new drivers they won't have funds to buy an ev and more likely won't be able to insure it. I could now go and buy a fiesta and do marginal servicing to save cash and in say 8 years could get a recon engine cheaper that a ev battery swop and still have 300 mile range. I keep seeing these types of videos saying ye evs are cheap to buy and run and don't require much servicing that's ture for the first few years but not when they're 2nd or 3rd or 4th hand but something tells me that once the battery has got to half its original life it should be scrapped and the battery used for grid storage, its all good and well saying not every one wants a 200 mile range some people only need 30 mile but when you plug it in to charge you still need to charge it to full even though you can't use the full amount.

£4k sounds a bit optimistic. I saw a lowish mileage 2014 Zoe up for sale for £6k on a well known EV dealer's site a while back. It wasn't there long..... The Leaf is turning out to be fairly sought after by those chasing a bargain. There are already EV specialists out there offering battery refurbs and mods for reasonable money.
