Reverse Hyper - Why & How to Use this Powerful Low Back Accessory Exercise

Strengthen and rehab your back with the reverse hyper. Learn why and how to use this powerful lower back accessory exercise to build a stronger, more resilient back.
The reverse hyper takes your lumbar spine (low back) through its entire range of motion from flexion through extension. The flexion portion tractions the spine, essentially stretching and decompressing the spine.
Compared to back extensions or good mornings, where the legs are stable but the torso moves, with the reverse hyper the torso is stable and the legs move.
The reverse hyper requires an additional piece of equipment for your gym, but more companies are selling cheaper reverse hypers that can even be folded to save space.
When it comes to performing these correctly, these can be a bit weird at first. Put your feet in the straps and keep the straps taut (don't want the weights to bang onto your shins). Jump onto the pad and hold the handles. Your hips will hang off the pad.
To begin the movement, swing your legs up. It will probably take you a couple reps to get to full height (full back extension). At the top, think about holding the position. Allow gravity to lower weight and relax your back in the bottom.
It's a little hard to breathe while performing these. Do the best you can, and if you need to perform fewer reps, that's okay.
We tend to program these one of two ways: lower reps to strengthen the back and/or higher reps to rehab the back. Often, we do both, with a higher rep set one day and a lower rep set the other day.
The higher rep, rehab routine looks like 3-4 sets for 12-15 reps. The lower rep strengthening day looks more like 3 sets of 6-8 reps.
This exercise will typically end the workout, though some may find benefit to doing this earlier in the workout.
If you struggle to maintain lumbar extension during your deadlifts, this is not the best exercise because you allow your lower back to round, which is something we'd like to avoid during your deadlift.
If you commonly struggle with low back pain, this is a great exercise to try.

Nice! Been suffering from lower lumbar and L4-L5 S1 injuries due to being morbidly obese, long hours; 16 hrs per day sitting on old classroom chair. Lost Bowel control, thought it was a stroke or something. Nope, went to dr then local emergency. They checked and finally said NO, ..you didn't have a stroke. Also have MS, so ass clown doctors now attribute EVERY health issue I have to MS; even when long sitting and with tailbone pain after sitting on a wood chair with LITTLE cushion, must be MS, Right!? Nope: Its due to my weight, my sedentary work at my computer, and not doing a lick of excercise they way I used to ten years ago, sigh. Well, after viewing many videos and finding this video, Im doing the correct excercises until I buy the machine..., and get this...Its Already Helping Me after suffering from this problem and Injury and Hospitalization in Feb. 2023... 😮 Thank You Very Much For The Information and Knowledge so I can get back to normal and my life. I've just discovered this machine in my crossfit gym, all dusted in the corned. This is perfect for me as I have L4, L5 and S1 problems. I've tried this today and the feeling is very odd, I can feel things shifting in the pelvis area, very satisfying to use. I thought I would never see this machine IRL, been hunting for this for the past 2 years. Finally reverse hyper starts to make traction.

For anyone watching this, do this or use something else like a bench or hyper extension until you can afford to get it. My lower back went and I know why and it was the most painful i have experienced. This was because the glutes were weak. Your glutes plays a huge role for your hip flexors, and everything else, plus there's a muscle that connections to your hips and up to the middle of your back. It runs through the glutes, and so when that tightens due to not exercising it, due to sitting a lot, it gets smaller and so it puts pressure on your spine and your hips, and it only takes on mistake on a deadlift, a pendley row due sitting a lot at your desk and lack of stretching, excercises. It snaps, and you feel pain in lower back, glutes, middle lower of glutes so you can't even sit down and walk. Now you know why old people who walk slow not because they are old but due to lack of care of their body, muscles etc. I healed through lots of stretching daily and using this machine. Doctors said I needed surgery, all sorts but I refused. I am now recovered, strong doing dead lifts, pendley rows they said I'd never be able to do again! You got this machine in gym..use it often!

Light is a weight you can do a comfortable 15-25 reps for a couple sets. Heavy is 5-8 reps for 3-5 sets. Like basically every other exercise out there. This makes it relatable to your body specifically.

My wife tweaked her back for the first time and I'm trying to get her to use the reverse hyper, but she's too self conscious and thinks everyone is looking at her when she climbs up on it (and she's probably right are because she's hot and lifts more than some dudes). Plus the gym didn't install the step-up bar correctly and placed on the inside, so you literally have to awkwardly scamper up the thing for us vertically challenged. So my question is how do you get your wife to not give a fuck about this issue? 😂

Have her wear a long shirt for that particular lift. It sucks I'm sure, and I'll admit when in the gym it's hard to look away from an atractive women especially when they're bending over or squating...I try and look the other way out of respect but still find myself at times looking. Maybe get her one for home use, I've been looking into the 400$ foldable one Rogue sells, that way only you can see her lol.
@mptrader1620
@mptrader1620 Год назад
As Juan Doe said... a long shirt - but even better since she may not want to where a long shirt during the entire workout is just tie one around her waist for that exercise only then you can put it in a locker or carry it around for her... anything to make it easier without obstacles for her. If that does not work it may be something else she is thinking about. It is a good starting point.

you mention to get the legs as high as possible and to hold, this isn't how louie simmons recommends, he says to go to about ~20-30 degree short of the top and do not hold, only momentum to keep swinging
@ronroyce6
@ronroyce6 2 года назад
He's quite against swinging it violently. He's even said that those who can shake the scout hyper aren't controlling the reps enough and has recommended a quassi mental pause at the top and a fast but controlled eccentric.

Using momentum isn't proper, lower the weight and slow controlled reps

That's not the purpose of this exercise, as typically done. No problem with doing it how you're advocating, but it becomes something different.
