Reverse Sneeze In Dogs: What it looks like and what to do!
-----------
🐾 Do you have dog BEHAVIOR issues you want to be fixed? Learn how to stop the biting, potting in the house, and other 🙈 behavioral issues with this all-inclusive and affordable puppy 🐶 training course by Dr. Dunbar. [I am an affiliate of this course and will receive a small commission if you pay for the course] See course details by clicking here 👉 bit.ly/TopDogAcademyDunbar
--------
Reverse sneezing can happen to a Boston Terrier at any age. If a dog becomes overexcited, has an environmental allergic reaction, or gulps his food down quickly, he may have a fit of reverse sneezing. During this event, nasal secretions fall onto the soft palate, causing a closing of the windpipe. This closure results in a wheezing sound. The windpipe will reopen quickly, especially if the dog remains calm during the attack.

Our family had our TAZ for 14 years. He reversed-sneezed every so often the older he got. The method I used for him was to roll him over slowly onto his back and rubbed his belly. It worked every time. It calmed him down. My thought process was to help him open the pallet a bit. As I said, it worked every time. Much better than holding him. Holding his ribs was a great method also.

I had seen this video years ago and I’ve always remembered it but I’d never 3xperienced it with my dog….until just now @ 245am. My dog was laying on my chest and stood up and starting gasping (or so it sounded). I told myself not to panic bc I’d seen this and knew he was ok but man is it scary. I got him on the bed so I could sit up and held him tightly like u showed, it stopped quickly! It came back a few seconds later but not nearly as bad, so this time I held a little longer. He’s now sleeping peacefully and I am so thankful!!

Thank you so much! My Miniature Bull Terrier cross fox terrier puppy started doing this a few days ago, and I thought it was either allergies (since she is allergic to grass, she gets spotty, red and itchy since she's mostly white and has pink skin), anxiety or a medical problem. When she does that she gets sad so I hug her and give her a treat or play. Thank you, you've helped everyone not freak out! 💜

Thank you! I have two Boston’s but one has a much more smushed face like a Frenchie. She seems to do it more frequently maybe a once month. But I just comfort her and that’s it she’s good to go right after. My older Boston has done it but not nearly as much. I definitely think their breathing palette has something to do with frequency.

My beagle would do this sometimes. I figured she had something in her nose when she did it, so I would block her nose for a split second, then let her huff it out. Worked every time. My dog Clarence reverse sneezes all the time. I do this routinely and this works for Clarence (your mileage may vary). He is a male Beagle-ish/mutt rescue. Here is my "Computer Mouse" method: 1. Most importantly, help him relax. He may be scared. Not only scared that something is happening he can't control, but that he is doing something wrong. Shower him with praise and love in a very soft voice right next to his face/ear. And why not? He is indeed, a very good boy. 2. Get behind him. Put his snout in your hand like it's a computer mouse with your palm on top. Position it so that the flat of your finger will cover one of his nostrils - like your finger reaching for the mouse button. Hold his snout closed by closing your fingers and make sure no air goes in or out of one of the nostrils. During this time, never stop doing step 1. Your goal here is to force any air he gets or expels through only the one open nostril. 90% is not good enough. ALL air (within reason because you don't ever want to hurt or scare him either). 3. With your other hand, rub his throat in long strokes. I think it's mainly to extend it as much as possible. And again, don't forget to keep doing step 1. All.The.Time. 4. He will start to resist a little at first, but hold firm. Then he will obviously want out. Release him, but don't stop petting him and praising him. If he continues reverse sneezing, do it again, but this time cover the other nostril. 5. Keep repeating this, alternating nostrils until it goes away. Never close both nostrils. Be patient. Sometimes it can take a while. Instead of eyeing the clock, look at your technique and the dog's response. Try something different - less pressure, amount of air sealed, time, etc. Have someone else try it. Maybe he/she is not relaxing enough with you. Don't be offended. Trying being the one that can't stop sneezing without your typical RU-vid user's help. This method works 100% of the time for Clarence. It's a mixture of the great advice I've seen here at the University of RU-vid along with trial and error because with Clarence, reverse sneezing is a feature - not a bug. The Vet said it's unusual at his frequency, but nothing harmful. And I actually think it's made us even closer because face it, this is a weird bond.

My 5 month old Boston does it pretty much every morning after he eats or as we get outside. (Started a few weeks ago once we recovered from kennel cough) Absolutely terrifying. Been to the vets and didn’t get any feedback. They said that they can check it out during neutering. Some advice I found which helps to our little guy is to open his mouth so he can inhale through it and usually it stops sneezing.

The AKC and WebMD have similar (to each other) recommendations: "A common remedy is to hold the dog’s nostrils closed for a second and lightly massage its throat to calm him. Lightly blowing in his face may also help. This should cause the dog to swallow a couple of times, which will usually stop the spasm of the reverse sneeze. Getting the dog in a cool area or outside with fresh air while trying to verbally calm him can also be useful."

My dogs both suffer from reverse sneezing, one is a lab/x mix with a deep chest area, the other is a samoyed/collie mix with a long body, both have been abused before i got them home. My vet told me that reverse sneezing oftens comes from them not sinking their spit right when exited/scared. I believe thats right cause when the samoyed mix gets spooked by someting he risk a reverse sneeze cause his spit go down his windpipe.. its so scary the first time you witness a reverse sneeze, i felt so helpless and were trying to hold the nose and make them open their mouth to check if the dogs were choking on something.. but after watching videos i now know the best way to help my boys if needed. 🐕👌🏻 Sorry for bad grammer, english is my third language, so feel free to correct my spelling :)

My shih tzu does this. It was terrifying at first so I brought her to vet. The vet to told me that it was reverse sneezing and it was typical to brachycephalic dogs. Apparently it doesn't do any harm to them. I was taught to massage her neck and throat and try blowing on her face.

My 10 yr old pug Maggie has done this her whole life. It's not dangerous doesn't seem to bother her. Now today she started with a bad cough, might have to see Dr if this continues.

Update on my pugs cough, she has had the reverse sneezing her whole life,(10) now she has a collapsed trachea, not good. It's common Always watch for signs in pugs and Boston's, better to catch it early.

We have always had Bostons. We just rub their throats, gently, back and forth. It helps them relax.

Great advice! When our Bostons do that we hold their chests & rub their throats. It does seem to help.

I had a Boston that was a runt who had health problems & she did that almost every day for any reason. The vet explained it was common but ok. She sounded worse than his dog cause mine had a snort with each sneeze but only lasted 20 - 30 seconds.

Bostons reverse sneeze when they get startled or are too excited. They gasp for air and the flap in their throat closes. To open it get a paper towel and hold both nostrils closed until they take a breath by mouth 3 times in succession. Hold the back of their neck with the other hand and say "calm down" and "take a breath." They get it. Anything less than 3 mouth breaths and you have to start over. This is my fifth Boston. They all did this on occasion. This works every time and restores them quickly.
