Sometimes dogs and cats make this horrible choking/sneezing/gasping sound that can be quite scary.
What is it?
It's a reverse sneeze.

I hate when this happens. I read an article where a Vet said to cover their nostrils for just a split second and that will cause them to swallow and fix it. I tried it and it worked.

Yes you can do that. The other option is to put your finger in their mouth to encourage them to swallow.

Both my dogs, neither short snouted, had that happen a few times. One more than the other. It helped to get them between your legs and slowly stroke their sides and head and speak soothingly to them. The one dog it happened to more often would panic and it would get worse. After the first few times she would come to me and turn so I could stroke her to help calm her down.

My Pitbull has done this for A LONG TIME but never could figure out what was going on even took him to a vet a few years ago & she NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT THIS!! This literally just made my anxiety for his health go WAAAY down & im not a crazy person lol. I guess I might’ve explained it more dramatically maybe lol. But thank you for this video! This makes me feel a lot better for my big guy!

This used to scare me so much I though she was dying Covering her nose to stop the air usually stops it instantly. It sounds a lot different from our beagles reverse sneeze so I didn’t know what it was

I remember that popular video on Instagram where dog lies on the grave snd sneezing just like this but people still think it's sobbing and find that thing cute. No matter how you try to explain they won't listen. It kills me sometimes.

I got so scared when this first happened to my dog…by my mum previously had a dog that did the same thing and told me to put my hand over her nose for a second and she’ll stop and it works!! I also put her between my legs and stroke her side and her neck and it calms her down. Don’t panic your dog when this happens because it could make it worse. Just stay calm and know it’ll blow over! :)

teach your dog to swallow hard demonstrate as its happening ,In desperation they should follow ,ours now does this and often catches it as its about to start,Then if it continues she keeps swallowing and it goes faster ,she also feels like she has it under control by doing it rather then not knowing how to stop it,

ours gets this now and again but shes so clever we told her to keep swallowing .so mostly as it starts she swallows hard and it stops in seconds,

My 6 pound Chihuahua always does this. It lasts for about 15 seconds, very quiet and then oes away.

Try popping your finger in their mouth to encourage swallowing. It may be due to allergies, I notice it occurs more at times of the year when there is more pollen around.

Or you can try staying calm and stroking his sides while speaking in long slow soothing words.

ours does this we taught her to swallow hard while its happening,when it happens she was looking at us desperate and i demonstrated to her what to do,she followed .mostly she stops it in seconds and the longest is about a minute if she keeps swallowing .

My shitzu did this all the time when we lived in Missouri but then we moved to West Virginia and she hasn’t done it in 5 years. It must have been allergies because we lived in Missouri for 7 years and she did it constantly but once we left she hasn’t done it at all.

My dog does this to, he usually stops when I lift him up with his feet up and let his head hang, that way his trachea expands and he can breathe normally

It is related to their soft palate. You might find popping a finger in his mouth to encourage swallowing helps.

Mine did this for the first time yesterday and did one this morning, frightened the shit out of me. Is it ok or do I need to do anything? Only happened for a few seconds each time.

Stroke her sides and speak soothingly to her. Stay calm yourself. It's almost like hiccups for people. The more you tense the worse it gets. Stroke her sides and head and say soft soothing things. I would say along with each slow stroke, "Caaaallllm down"

It can be scary! We find the best way to stop it is to put your finger in their mouth so you get them to swallow. This flicks the soft palate back into the normal position.

My girl Maggie is a 1.5 year old Frenchie and has been reverse sneezing a ton lately. She does it mostly when we go outside and the pollen levels have been bad. But she has been getting a bit of a runny nose during an episode. Is that normal? Thank you!!!

This happens when the dogs trachea collapses or something and then you just have to cover their nose and mouth for a second or two then their good

Oh that's not good. Be careful when they are throwing up, they can aspirate. If your dog is a brachycephalic breed it would be worth having them examined for boas surgery.
