I bring you along as I replace a reversing valve in a 10 year old Tempstar unit that was diagnosed by a fellow tech with a not so happy ending.

I really appreciate this video even more that it didn't end well. We all learned something in the process that we can add to our wisdom. I would have liked to see you remove and install the coil as that is missing from most videos I watch. I would think that the handling of outdoor coils is very important especially if done by yourself. Keep the good and the bad videos rolling; they're both important to us.

had an identical problem, compressor was running, pulling low amps, same pressures low and high, had another tech come and check for a second opinion,we agreed valves in compressor bad, swapped out the compressor and guess what, exact results, damn, you know that feeling you get,yep that one, what i should of done the first time, pull the fan and check across the rev valve,we did,hot gas line, hot, through the valve and back into the suction line, looped, stuck valve,it was late friday afternoon, isnt it always?come monday new valve and why not, accumulator also, both only $70,live and learn, not everything is so cut and dry,and thanks for putting up the vid that didnt fix it,it happens to all of us

I can see how that could happen . I will always explain to customer that sometimes if unit has 2 problems or even if the reversing valve being bad that compressor could be bad. Hind sight is always easier you could have checked unit out yourself before replacing reversing valve. Dpnt get me wrong I see how what happens sometimes we are in the real world and yes things are not always cut and dry. I applaud your company in doing the right thing. The video is a excellent educational tool for the younger guys . Keep up the good work. Have a blessed day

Good video... I like that you did not throw anyone under the bus. I also like whatever company you are working for being honest! Question if I may tho... End of the winter last year my indoor and outdoor unit ran continually on heat. As far as I could tell, the heat strips did not come on and it stayed right at 70 degrees where I had the thermostat set. When I found out it was running all the time, I shut it off and limped through the rest of winter with my wood stove. All summer the AC has worked perfectly. This to me means the compressor is working fine. What would be your first guess about the heat? Thermostat or perhaps a stuck relay??? Any help would be appreciated!

In a situation like that the easiest way to troubleshoot is by pumping down the unit, if it won't pump down, you know you have a bad compressor (leaking valves). This is much harder if it's a RTU can't pump those down, I wound quote both part in that case

As an ex electrician I never take another electricians word for it. I always re-troubleshoot the problem unless re-troubleshooting would take 6 hours or something ridiculous like that. I trust my troubleshooting skills a hell of lot more than someone else's skills. If my boss told me to just replace it and would fire me if I spent time re-troubleshooting it then, of course, I would replace it. Otherwise I am going to troubleshoot the system myself and make a determination.

Ya sometimes those heat pump reversing valves can be kind of confusing to diagnosis ...some times it better to just run 24 volts to the solenoid directly and see if the reversing valve shifts... but can be trick as some times its stuck half open regardless based on clogged capillary valve on it.... any how when in doubt just replace it as its more of a headache to try troubleshooting it if direct 24 volts to it doesn't give you any clue. I say another major hint it has to do with a reversing valve is if you can get cooled but turning the heat on you cann't get heat (visa-versa)

I tell customers up front. I don't recommend just changing a reversing valve or even just a compressor. Much better results to just change the condenser. You'll get a better warranty and I can almost 100% feel confident it will solve your problem. Replaced a 2.5 ton American Standard last week at a rental house that was only 4.5 years old. Still under warranty, but not worth chancing in my opinion. The new Meratherm is up and running with a 10 year warranty. Happy people all the way around.

nice , but nitrogen for R-410 ? Must have similar low /high side pressures and amount in oz that R-410a does. You really had to basically rebuild the whole entire system resolder condenser , reversing valves , recharge system , put back fan and circuit the whole shebang. The only thing you didn't have to touch by the looks of it is inside stuff like evaporator , metering TXV valve...etc.

I have seen some even uses magnets to try to test the reversing valve to shift it either way if any signs of cooled but not hot (visa-versa) just replace and save you the headache. I cannot afford another ac replacement as I've already paid for 2 in the past 2yrs. I can only pray they don't tell me the compressor is bad. I'm thinking its the reversing valve that's stuck since the heat works. but then again it could be the aux providing heat.

I 'm not real smart about these things but why not change out the compressor instead of the whole system. Appears to me that the problem was the compressor to start with. Just Saying that considering the age and that rusty looking accumulator, that's bound to give trouble in the near future, why not suggest a new system from the get-go. But you did a heck of a good job changing out the reversing valve, enjoyed the video. Keep on Trucking

Took him 5 minutes and i took the cabinet apart and found the leak on my goodman 14 seer heat pump . It worked fine for a day 122 degree vent temperature. Now its not heating and he says the reversing valve is hung, well it was fine till he fixed it. He messed around with the wires in the outside unit, now it only cools and i have to use the emergency heat to get heat. I think he just wanted to sell me a new 5,000 dollar hvac system

Do you typically use and recommend an air acetylene setup for this type of job?

TBH... we dont have much for heat pumps here... (it gets to -3X* here)... and anytime i walk up to one im extremely intimidated. Im not sure what to even check besides my usual. If something is wrong with a reversing valve, i wouldnt have any idea how to confirm...

Reversing valve probably took its toll on the compressor anyway. On heat pumps, if you change 1, its best to also change out the other.

A 7 amp drop across the compressor should have been a good indicator that it wasn't working and it probably was only working off 70% of it's max power.

Sorry man but that is a completely arbitrary number. As is the 70% "Max Power". Bottom line in this old video is that the original tech made a mistake during his diagnosis and I didn't reconfirm his findings before starting the repair. Thanks for watching

Naw that tech that troubleshoot the unit didn’t put there gages on. You would have some sort of suction, and how you showed no fluctuation on your gages that tech should of known.
