I review the 2012 Acura TL SH-AWD with the new-for-2012 6-speed automatic transmission. Despite this vehicle's age, it has aged well in many respects, like with its stout 3.7L V6 that still makes more horsepower than Acura's current sedan, the TLX. In other areas of course it hasn't aged well, like the interior technology. But with an as-tested price of just $11,990 for this higher-mileage example, the value is hard to argue with. What do you think about the 2012 Acura TL? Thanks to Harrison Auto Sales for providing this vehicle to review! It's currently for sale and more info can be found on it here: www.harrisonautos.com/details...

Agreed with the all of the above. I think another part of it though was that Acuras of this era weren't all that appealing brand new vs the competetion, but now that everything from this year is well out of warranty this is a great used buy compared to the Germans.

Wow a double, first the first generation TLX, and now a 4th generation TL :) Both the TLX and TL are criminally underrated Japanese sport sedans. Sure this TL wasn't the amazing 3rd generation from 2004-2008, but Acura putting their amazing SH-AWD system in the TL finally gave it the amazing driving experience it needed, since the FWD limits showed on the 3rd generation, even if that car didn't really feel like FWD when you started to hustle that around. Also, that amazing 3.7L J37 VTEC V6, you can never get tired of listening to a Honda V6. It's music to my ears. And the fact that this TL has 127,000 miles and it still looks fairly nice on the inside, and it still drives nice shows that Honda reliability. Very good resale value because of its durability.

Nice. My Mom recently bought one of these a few months ago. Its a 2012 3.7L SHAWD 6MT that had 125,000mi on the odo when purchased. I was so surprised that she bought a 6MT, because shes almost 70, lol! Im IN LOVE WITH THE CAR! I look for excuses just to drive it. Im VERY surprised by how well the car has held up as a whole. The previous owner had thorough service records, most of which at an Acura dealership. There is 1 bad rattle that occurs in/on the rear package tray when a song with a lot of bass plays(Ill fix it in 2 weeks), but other than that, there are ZERO squeaks or creeks with the chassis, body or rest of the interior. I replaced the pcv valve, cleared the headlight lenses, changed the oil & filter, changed the transfer case fluid, changed the MTF, changed the rear diff fluid, installed Acura logo puddle lights, fixed the roll-top like center console cupholder cover, fixed the rear seat armrest cupholder door, fixed a rear seat headrest release button, repaired a few tears on the inside bolsters of both front seats, replaced 2 interior door pull handles that were scratched, and I installed some interior led footwell lights. Now the car is in almost "like new" condition, lol. I honestly think that its a really good looking car as well; its white btw.

I’ve got a 2014 TL with 150K on it. After 10 years, it still drives and feels just as good as it did when I first drove it home from the dealer. That says a lot. I’ve said many times that it’s a very under the radar car that far exceeds everything I expected. It is a GREAT car. My biggest fear is when it’s finally time to replace it, will I like my next car as much after 10 years on the road?

You were heavy on the throttle I'm guessing. I see 9-11 L/100 km in Ottawa when I commute, and 8 ish L/100 km on trips. Very efficient VVEL system makes it torquey down low, there's a lot more valvetrain magic going than in the J37 (TL). My '13 G is at 192K km, I've had it for 7 years and no sign of slowing down.

Hilarious, I just traded in my bimmer for a G35, and was considering a TL as well. I was getting sick of turbo lag everywhere and the transmission doing so much work. I'd rather be burning through gas and tires than having to wait for downshifts and turbo spool.

@@Joshua102888 other than the less than ideal gas mileage, I heard Honda’s 3.7L V6 had a defect in regards to oil burning problems, so idk if you experienced that in your TL.

Crazy to think that the previous Gen TLX with that 3.5L V6 has less horsepower than this TL. I mean 305 HP is still a healthy amount of power even to this day. Even the 3.5L V6 when this TL came out with 280 HP was still a very good amount of power for the FWD model, and with the FWD model being lighter, 280 HP is perfect for that time.

I think modern car styling has really made the power plenum grille age better than I expected it to. These cars had some pretty big shoes to fill from the previous gen but they still seem like a decent buy, especially with today's pricing.

currently looking at a 2012 sh-awd w tech, it’s $9k with 130k miles. should i find one with less miles or should this one last me a few years

yea it’ll last you years make sure it’s been maintained main thing timing belt. also check the coolant fluid it should b blue. obviously drive test it check suspension. I paid 7k for mines with 120k and it came with a XLR8 catback.. you can offer 7500-8k cash and most likely walk away with it.

I owned both second and 3rd generation TLs. Both great cars. The 4th generation was really a sales disaster. Sales dropped over 50% compared to the 3rd generation sales figures. I remember an Acura sales acquaintance saying of the 2009 TL: “How the hell are we supposed to sell this?”

It's hard to argue with the instant torque of a naturally aspirated 3.7L v6. Even though the 0-60 numbers are probably lower than something like a 2012 wrx, the instant torque will still make it feel faster in day to day driving. And when you compare this to modern 2.0L turbo cars, those things make you wait for almost an entire second before building enough boost for the first part of the turbo to kick in at 1500rpm, it's an awful experience and terrible when you're changing lanes on the freeway in traffic.
@mephisto212
@mephisto212 9 месяцев назад
Not to mention you have all the reliability of these normal port injected engines. These TL's do have timing belts but the VQ engines in the g35/g37 don't. You also don't have the extra failure point of the oil filter housing mixing coolant and oil which is common on modern cars also (I think all german cars now and newer fords have this terrible design).

My Mom actually just bought one of these a few months ago. Its a 2012 SHAWD 6MT with 125,000mi, and honestly, its friggin awesome! I love driving it and find myself looking for things to do or places to go, just so I can drive it, using the excuse that it gets better mpgs than my suv, lol. One thing, eventhough this has a V6, it still has the same characteristics as Honda 4 cylinders, meaning if you wanna move, you gotta rev it out. For a V6, it doesnt have much low rpm torque to me, but I like that, because it gives an excuse to rev the shit out of it, lol.... If you drive it hard/rev high, it will probably burn about 1 to 1.5qts of oil between oil changes.... I really like the SHAWD system too, when doing a u-turn, if you are aggressive with the throttle, the rear end "slides" around nicely.

Weird the current gen TLX is about the same size but has a smaller seat. One thing that worries about going with the SHAWD is the 3.7 which has oil burning problem cause by a design defect. Probably why Honda stopped using it.😁
@TheBreakfastLover
@TheBreakfastLover 9 месяцев назад
True, but I don't think it's that weird. The current TLX has a long dash-to-axle ratio while the 4G TL has more traditional FWD proportions.

No oil consumption issues. That’s also like the best problem to have with a car. Just top off oil every few thousand
@lornestein7248
@lornestein7248 5 месяцев назад
Like someone else posted.. If you do 2 oil changes each year regardless of K & change the PVC valve each 40k like I do, It doesn't really matter how much oil it consumes. It should always be clean and close enough to full to prevent engine problems. Of course pull the dipstick, check & top up every 3 months.
