I review the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV and find that there's a lot to like about Chevy's most affordable EV. It's a combination of (mostly) good tech, top-notch range, features that competitors don't offer, and solid driving dynamics all wrapped up in an attractive and surprisingly spacious package. When you add in the low price tag, it becomes the best EV value in America in my opinion and one that's definitely worth considering. What do you think about the Equinox EV? My guess is if and when the Bolts become available, GM will move the Equinox upmarket, raising its prices to make room for the Bolts to be their sub-30k EV.

I agree - I feel that if enough people let any trial expire they (GM) will eventually offer killer deals on subscribing if you'd like to for a few months or a year at a time - sort of like SiriusXM - never pay full price - there's always a deal...

It really surprised me how nice it feels inside. The steering wheel and other touchpoints feel sturdy and premium compared to my 2019 Equinox and other Chevys that I’ve owned; except the HVAC knobs. Those felt very plastic compared to other switchgear in the car. The only thing I wish I could do is turn off the auto-present handles like you can do with Rivian. I don’t want Chicago winters to break the motors if the handles freeze over. Backseat was roomy but the seat cushion is very low which feels odd with long legs.

I realize that many EV's and Hybrids don't offer a spare tire, yet car reviewers should not understate the presence or non-existence of one. It is good that you showed much of the inside storage locations. Most reviewers overlook those notices. Good work on the review. Thanks.

Decent pricing, decent range, interesting styling but not over styled… EVs are getting there! I wish the rear hatch didn’t angle down so low and did more of the wagon thing to increase cargo usefulness.

I've been waiting to see the production car since a year ago. I really like the styling both interior and exterior. Wasn't expecting it to be so long @190.9" vs my 2018 Q5 183.6". But the base model's price of $35K-7500=27,500 would be hellava deal providing the battery pack and major components can last at least 15 years which I doubt. Wonder how much would the huge battery pack cost to replace?

Why would you think it needs to be replaced? My 2013 Volt runs just fine with 220k miles on it. I have a 2018 Model 3 with 122k miles. I'll have about 250-300k miles on my Model 3 before I get rid of it. There are Bolts with 300k miles on them. Your average consumer only drives 10-15k miles per year. Modern cars--EVs or ICE--can easily go 15 years.

As someone who has all but one car currently that only supports Apple Car Play but not Android Auto and is an Android phone user I've learned to adopt to just using the built-in system in my cars (MINI) and streaming via bluetooth. I will say that it's more distracting to NOT have AA or Apple Car Play but I'm sure most will actually get used to this approach....

I have this system (Android Automotive) in the first vehicle they put it in (Polestar 2) and it is fantastic. The onboard route planning with Google Maps is amazing and wouldn’t be possible with CarPlay?Android Auto as the vehicles onboard systems wouldn’t be integrated. Literally all of the people complaining about a lack of CarPlay/Android Auto have never used the system in the Equinox. CarPlay used to be a must have for me, but now I never use it.

I don't mind the lack of Apple Carplay, just as long as you have Google Maps and Waze built in and the ability to connect your phone so you can still play music and podcasts through the infotainment system. And unlike the really unfortunate Blazer EV, it appears GM has properly sorted out the Equinox EV.

All of that can be done with the equinox ev. I actually don't use the built in Spotify, I use Spotify from my phone via Bluetooth so I can hear when notifications come through. Have that split screened with wayze on the console no problem!

Slight correction: at 22:10 you said that only Super Cruise and Ford's BlueCruise let you go hands free, but as I understand it that is no longer true, as Tesla has (finally) re-enabled hands free driving after going away for several years.

Having a rear wiper should be great, except that the wiper looks so tiny. It looks like it would only clear a small section in the bottom on the window. The wiper blade should be at least a few inches longer to clear a taller and wider swath of glass.

Perhaps you can change the wiper arm and the blade to a more appropriate size. Mazda vehicles use a large rear wiper. Just remember to keep the window height in mind.

It cleans as much as possible. When activated, the sweep goes from top to bottom at the apex, literally not possible to fit anything longer.

For those upset about no CarPlay. You can easily buy a dongle to plug into usb/usbc and have the same functionality. I’ve done it on my CRV and a friends Subaru

Anyone understand the subscriptions that come with the car for the infotainment. I think you get maps for 8 years but Wi-Fi for only 6 months. If you want to use the apps on the system will you need to use your phone as a hotspot? If so I wonder how well that would work on a convenience level. Or do you have a fully functioning system for 8 years where you can use the apps kind of like you could use CarPlay? I’ve been on the Chevy website and I can’t find any real information.

Depends on the dealer but yes most will. Be aware tho that if you lease it, you don't get the credit.

I both love and hate this car - I hate the fact that I'm considering a Chevy but love the fact that seems they're getting so much right at a very low price point.... I'm still concerned that it lacks AA or Apple CarPlay - one question though is the Google Play store the same as with other android devices or will it be restricted?

You can actually adjust that. There is a slider for "chime volume" and apparently it does blinker too because I literally can't hear them when driving.

Yup. I’ve spoken at length about this with a general manager at a GM dealer I know. If a driver uses CarPlay, GM doesn’t get that data. Every other reason given is a fluffy byproduct.

I keep seeing journalists make the same comment, the base price of a 1LT is $41,900 not $35. That's only *if* you qualify for the credit *and* the model (1LT) is *not yet available* 2RS and 2LT are the lowest trims on offer. Good price on the unavailable model after a tax credit.

Looks like Chevy has benchmarkef a lot of Model Y features in designing the Equinox. The no start button, the large under shelf storage space in the trunk are classic Tesla features put to good use here. My big burning question to the UAW is why are they're letting the OEMs to build almost all their green vehicles in Mexico or China for the American market? Equinoxes and Blazer, Mach E and Maverick are built in Mexico, Lincoln plugin hybrid are imported from China. Only Lucid, Rivian, WW and Tesla build their American-market EVs right here in the US employing American workers. Even Hyundai/Kia will start building their EVs in America. So UAW and OEMs, you got to do better!

too long imo...180-185 inches would have been perfect. Also with the Blazer only being 2 inches longer means they will cannibalize sales from each other. A 5-10 inch difference would have made it easier for sellers. With the Bolt EUV on hiatus, there is a gap in their lineup that lets the MY and other EV crossovers continue to sell against it.

Wow, this review feels very biased. The ID.4 has rear wiper, a cover on the glass roof, rear under floor storage, faster charging, 21 inch rims available, available cooled seats, heated rear seats, 5.6 sec 0-60 rather than 6.2. It's also 11 inches shorter with more cargo room! Not to mention lighter and more efficient with more horsepower. somehow you mention many times how this has more than the competition but I don't see that. The opening roof and the ability to keep ACC on in the cabin for 60 minutes are nice features though. Once you spec this with drive assist and tow package the price is the same as a stock ID.4 awd which has more features.

How does the tax credit work? You are still financing the full amount but get the credit after the fact?

You can file a Form 8936 to file with your annual return and get the rebate applied with your tax return, but the easiest way is to authorize the credits transfer to the dealership at the point of sale to reduce the purchase price. If you do that, make sure the dealership is registered with the IRS.

Also by doing the filing at the dealer you pay sales tax after the $7500 credit, that saves a good bit on sales tax. My dealer told me that they, I assume he meant the IRS took it away from them and I would have to file it on my taxes next year, I hope he was wrong.

It's 34k after the tax rebates. The base model is coming later in the year and will be about 28 after tax rebates.

From a May 30, 2024 Car and Driver article: "The auto industry has developed a bad habit of advertising a big range number and a low price while making it impossible to get both at the same time. Chevy runs against the current by equipping every Equinox EV with an 85-kWh battery. That means the $34,995 1LT will earn the same 319-mile EPA range that applies to all front-wheel-drive Equinox EVs. All-wheel-drive models are rated for 285 miles across the board."

Model Y is faster. This gets a few extra things but I guess it would depend on what you're after. Hyundai/Kia is more compelling but doesn't get the tax credit. Although they have their own incentives. The base trim with the tax credit is where this shines.

I've read a ton about this EV, I've watched a bunch of videos and for the price, for the range, for the features list, for the styling, for the self-driving tech, for the interior nothing else can touch this in the non-luxury category. And I have to point out, that Super Cruise is less than $3000, while the inferior Tesla AutoPilot costs $12,000!

Locking out the libraries of people with phones is just arrogant. Even Toyota folded after years of not having Android Auto and CarPlay. Their explanation seems lame. So they are saying they are doing this way because people sometimes have trouble with the functioning of their phones? And their Google entertainment system will be perfect? Seems like a pennywise, pound foolish GM decision to me.

EV means no sale. Another wasted new vehicle from GM. Also, they copied the hyundai kona's front end. Looks like a dodge hornet from the back. Matt sure is drinking the kool-aid on this firecracker.

you will lose value on ev quickly ev's are like cell phones on wheels next year it will have new features and technology and your car will be worth nothing will lose half its value

It's a car, man. Come on! We don't need all that electronic crap. We want an electric vehicle. Range and better affordability are what we need to focus on.

Great review. I disagree and will not encourage GM to continue blocking Apple and Android TECH integration. No way GM is capable of keeping our data safe. Our cars are notorious for leaking data. Car manufacturers safeguards are laughable. Apple and Android security patches are frequent and robust.

Average age is 13 years because new cars have got so expensive and people are holding onto them longer. If you are splurging on a new car, you want CarPlay.
