FINALLY!!!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HONOST OPINION!! Finally some channel I can really trust.. Dude I'm subbed. Dude, that's the thing I was moaning all over the internet! You can hear it from the sound demos! They are overly bright, and a little bit bass bossted. I tried really hard to love them like you did. BUT IT JUST DOESNT WORK. I want something as flat as possible. I think I'm going to go with Yamaha HS8 or Genelecs. Genelecs are very expensive. I don't like to use the sub. I want them because I just want flat sound in my apparment, not for studio monitoring. Btw does anybody know what happened the SonicSenseProAudio channel in the Soundcloud channel? They were recorded most of the studio monitors but now I can't see any of them. I can only see their old RU-vid comparisons. They were really, really helpfull. But I CAN'T FIND THEM and I'm about to make a desicion. Anyway thank you again. Also If you could recommend some monitors which have the flattest sound without needing a sub, it would be very useful. Thanks.

I own yamaha hs7 for a few years, I´m tired of them, really tired; not just frequency response, but you get very tired of them very fast. Max after 10 minutes, you just need a break, you need to pause them. Maybe good for mastering even though they are tiring, but forget about them fore regular listening, spikes at 1-2-4k, roll of bass, bumped mid section... I think adam A5T are the way to go, with a sub, but i am not buying yamaha hs ever again.

Exodus Velo I own Yamaha HS8 pair over a month now. Dude, these things are flat, only problem is my room. Just yesterday I listened Megatron Man album which is rather brightly mastered. 1st I enjoyed it, 2nd I only had little fatigue to be honest but I could switched to listen other things afterwards easily. And I just sit them very close at 1m although not ideal. I now, HS7s are juuuuust have a little bit more energy on the mids and highs, but I'm sure they are flatter then Adam A7X. Adam A7X's main advantage is that it can go lower. And don't trust me, just look at this video. Much respects. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P6be-2J2N8k.html

Genelecs are good but you still need to calibrate them to fit your room acoustics. There's no such thing as a perfect monitor out of the box unless you get lucky. A7x have 3 calibration knobs on the back that let you tune the speaker for your room. SonicSense comparisons were fun, but they're like comparing 8k TVs by filming the screens with a 1080p camera in a room with colored lighting, and they even admit that at the end of every comparison. Many pro mix engineers use Adam, Genelec, Focal, BareFoot, ATC, even Kali, but none of the top pros use KRK or Yamaha HS series--it's not even the same sport.
@AliBekirKlckaya
@AliBekirKlckaya 4 года назад
@@KarlGutowski I don't have knowledge on real experienced people's view on the monitors. And I don't have real life experience as well. I found a real great comparison, which is harder to find: (although it might be biased.) I recommend to everyone: www.pro-tools-expert.com/production-expert-1/2020/4/14/home-studio-speaker-shootout-for-audio-post-production-part-1 and it has part 2 as well. However, I am sure that there are more music has and is being made on Yamaha and KRK compared to others, and that was the other thing while I made my desicion. And on the other hand, seeing a high-boosted product like ADAM (except from their newest Digitally DSP'ed line up) is being praised by these so called "PROs" and everybody over and over again is really frightening. Yeah, they have way more potential once corrected, money does buy higher quality transducer. And about the SonicSense, they are comparing Apples to Apples. Although their recording and microphone might be really bad, I remember my first listening experience, without knowing anything about studio monitors, any brand. I still remember that I liked the Genelec and Yamaha. Others were far, far away from what they were doing. JBL LSR were also close as well, however what I noticed were that there was resonance in the low-mid low region, which I was right, I found out. These were my real life and real unbiased view on the sounds at that time. I was really shocked when I saw the Genelec's prices.. It's not even the same "sport".. This word seems a little bit biased, sorry dude.

I spent many weeks working with a pair of Adam A7x. It was in a properly treated studio control room. I did not find these monitors too bright. Having said that, I'm 65 years old so maybe you hear things that I don't. But I have used many types of nearfield monitors in my life. The first ones I owned were BBC Monitors for small cabins, the LS3/5A.

I really enjoy and respect your videos. I have not 'subscribed' to anyone else's channel but yours; you are so worth listening to. Thanks for having the courage to say - straight up - that something doesn't work for you. So many of us aren't going to be able to compare mid/high end monitors in the same room, or even at all. Videos like yours make me feel that I can create a workable 'short list' of which monitors I really need to hear, which is great because I am 300 miles from anywhere I could hear Focals, Barefoots, etc. Much appreciated sir.

I remember a world where you could actually A/B test monitors in a store, but now that most everyone buys on the Internet, there is inevitably buyer's bias that results from researching specs and reviews, making a decision, buying monitors without hearing them, and then thinking those are the best monitors in the world. We also live in a world where sales people push certain products because of the profit margin or an end-of-the month sales push, knowing that we can't hear before we buy. (BTW, if the huge candy company really wanted us to hear what they sell, why haven't they set up a few demonstration sites in major cities?) I'm grateful that Geoff has given a realistic assessment of the A7X monitors, which is consistent with criticisms from other reviewers who actually talk about the sound. As an owner of the Focal Solo6 Be monitors as well, I can appreciate that his ears are undoubtedly tuned to hearing beautiful, silky and clear highs without harshness or fatigue.

Nice review Geoff. I have a set of A7X's and didn't think to much of it until I started demoing the Amphion One18's. The first thing I noticed with the Amphion's was that the mids sound smoother and less prominent and that surprised me. What I realised was that I was so used to the brightness of the Adam's that I wasn't used to such smooth balanced mids. Also what you say about the low mids is 100% true. This area tends to sound muffled and is not defined enough in my opinion.

Off topic but I just bought a focal solo sub6. Absolute best subwoofer I've ever heard. Most subs I've tried never could mix right with the other speakers. You could always hear or tell there was a sub on. With the sub6 it sounds like Im listening to giant full range speakers that sound sooooo good. It blends perfectly! They definitely got it right with that sub.

I purchased these monitors a few months ago and they have contributed to better mixing/mastering. That said, they are my first monitors in this price/quality range so I don't have an applicable reference point for comparison. One question. After adjusting the shelf or tweeter level controls on the back, where you able to adjust the high end to a level that cleared up any masking in the mid frequency range?

first video of yours I've seen and from production value and knowledge I will defo check out more! the review seems very incomplete? too bright out of the box, once adjusted how do they sound? were mids still masked? did you get used to the tweeter sound? kinda left clueless.

I have owned f7 tv7 and ax7 and all the tweeters are harsh for about the first month and then they become level and during this period just tape a piece of studio foam above the tweeter I used aurolex foam and it fixed the issue 2 dollar fix . I cut the foam shaped like a door wedge and tape it above my tweeter where the foam lips out just enough to soften the highs until broken in completely

Hi, Geoff. Really appreciate your honesty and integrity here - despite being lent these by Adam, you didn't sugar coat your review. Kudos. I have the previous model - the A7s - back home. I'm overseas right now and missing them like hell. What I'm missing most is that honest top-end. I don't know if they've tweaked something in the design since but to me, the mid-range is extraordinarily deep and detailed, and the top is not aggressive sounding at all - a little forward perhaps but if anything it sometimes makes my mixes sound a bit too sweet! I've learned to compensate for this and now I'm finding the learning curve for my travel monitors difficult to deal with. I'm getting some unpleasant surprises in my mixes. I'm also missing good single malt. I'm just about to polish off the last of the Cardhu which I brought back with me and your video has me hankering after another Speysider. An Aberlour would go down very well right now. The abundh (I can't pronounce it either) is cask strength - add a couple of drops of water to it and it'll open up into something really special. Cheers!

I can sum them up here: they’re very reliable and offer great low end resolution without needing a sub (necessarily). My only complaints are these: I wish they’d offered built it protection tweeter protection. A metal grill or something. They’re made of beryllium and quite exposed. One cracked during a move. The other thing, and I have no empirical proof, is that they seem to be slightly lower output than when I first bought them. Little quieter. Otherwise, they’re great.

Interesting review and the honesty is much appreciated. I understand your main gripe with the A7X but the top-end is what sold me on them. I find that when stuff sounds bright to the point of being hash and piercing, there's an issue in the mix there and they make it very obvious. And although they are bright, I don't find them fatiguing at all. It's a bit horses for courses I guess, and I suppose it takes a bit getting used to them. But personally I really like working with them. The low-end is very tight and precise (although of course it's lacking in the bottom octave), the mids seem quite balanced to my ears, and yes, I love that high-end :)

Having bought these speakers and used them for the last 9 months i can say that i am completly in love with them , i loved your review and also understand your reaction to the "high-end performance" of this ribbon tweeters and it kind of was a pain in the ass to get use to them but after some months of "hear-training" i find the fast response of the high frequencies super helpfull in terms of producing and processing Electronic music. The only big problem i got with these speakers is that 1 month after i got them , one of the speakers just gave up on life XD ( however ADAM were awesome and after 3 weeks i got my speaker ready to rock and never failed me again :D no charge on that also :) ) loving your videos by the way !!!

I recently Did side to side comparison of the A7X and the new A4V and the new Adams tweeters are worse by a long shot. Overall teh AX serious is a better speakere than the new A4V even. The new monirors have very nice bass and mids but the tweeters is harsh. If I had to chosse I'd keep the A7X version of these speakers. The problem is this leavs very little choice for decent monitors unless you buy something like the Focal Solo's you have which are not cheap for many of us. Thanks again man.

Wow...I had a feeling someone was going to bust the hype. Thank you so much for this fantastic and review. I truly believe what you said is absolutley true, not actually having heard these for myself but it all makes sense now. These are exactly what someone would need as an addition to a studio, but not as a substitute for their workhorse monitors. For me, that would be my combination HS8+Avantones. I like the fact that you said they are bright....I could definitely use that for catching artifacts in the highs, just like the Avantones for the mids. To be honest, I'm probably going to buy a pair for that reason alone and add them to my home studio. This sounds like something I really need. By the way, I do a LOT of post production with RX...so these look like a necessity for me. Thanks again brother.

I used the smaller adams from the AX series before, mainly to have a small but what I thought was an “accurate” reference to use alongside my other monitors, I had some issues with neighbours over noise in the past so I actually had to end up using those as my main monitors alongside some headphones for low end sanity checks, and my mixes I did on them where just always off, (I know people who’ve made great mixes on Adams) but I just couldn’t be consistent with them, I also noticed only after eventually sorting that issue out with neighbours and being able to get other monitors that I missed a few resonances in the mixes I did with them as well, fast forward to later once I became a Mastering Engineer, so many clients who send me mixes that have used Adam AX monitors have similar issues in their mixes. I think Adam audio as a company builds a lot of hype and their marketing is great, and I think people fall victim to that. Don’t get me wrong, as I’ve said I’ve also heard outstanding mixdowns done on them, and monitor choice is a very personal thing, but yeah, I just found it interesting at least anyway that the mixes that weren’t good done on them for the most part had similar issues

I honestly much preferred my older focal alpha 65 in my room, extended bass response and less harsh in the highs, the music I make is extremely sub bass heavy and I just couldn't hear things down there as much as the focals. I wish I saw this before buying a pair of A7X's. I was so excited when I got them I thought It'd be a huge upgrade on a sound perspective, and... NOPE. Hugely disappointed. Highs were bright but my main concern was the lack on the low end, it just wasn't tight enough for me. I even paired them with a sub it did improve the sound a lot but still was not convinced. I think mixing with a subwoofer can get tricky since you might make wrong decisions (too much bass or not enough bass). I am not saying these suck. Some people love them and I tried my hardest to love them too but I just couldn't. What I conclude (not saying I have the absolute truth) is that you have to listen to several monitors for yourself and pick which ones you like best. And get used to the sound. Before the A7X's I've had KRK Rokits 6 and Yamaha HS8. I ended up going back to the Yamaha HS8. Really love how well balanced they are without the necessity of a subwoofer. They provide the best tone in lows, mids and highs imo. But again, that's just my ears opinion. You have to find out what your ears like. If an audio equipment is more expensive, It does not mean it's better. At the end of the day, It's not about what you have, It's what you do with what you have. Thanks for the honest review! EDIT: Afer about 8 months or so. I really like the sound of these with a sub woofer paired (120hz crosssover). It really fixed the bass now.

I will disagree about TOO BRIGHT I would say too detailed which is weird thing to say and I like that detail what I dont like in Highs is I cannot hear the small decay of a reverb for example when used on hihats (decay 1.2second 30% - 35% wet) I hear more space but not the decay time as I hear it in a headphones because in headphones I actually hear the reverb chamber/room but here on speakers I get more kinda depth rather than room feeling ofcoarse when I crank up reverb to 1.7 seconds or 2 seconds and make wetness 40-50% then reverb comes in but again differently overall amazing speakers that need an ear to get used to

Thanks so much for this review! I did have a question/thought though… From all that I’ve read, seen, and heard about these speakers the thing that comes up most about these tweeters is their flat honesty. I’ve heard shimmering, incredibly crisp and out of this world frequencies. To me, and I admit I’m new to this in some regards, I want that honesty. Highs kill me anyway from a touring/monitor mishap so I’m very sensitive to them. I’m also a midrange lover (I’ve got a Boogie Mark V) and agree completely with your assessment. I’m curious as to how exactly it was covering up those mids? Were guitars, hh’s piercing and not crunching through? We’re the highs too high when you did your car test? Thanks!
@ManchesterMusic
@ManchesterMusic 4 года назад
Imho mids were masked by the highs , not severely, but enough for me to notice. They’re perceptible, sure, but a tweeter shelf adjustment on the monitors themselves is required for the mid range to articulate properly i’d say.

My opinion hasn't changed since this review. I reached out to Adam upon posting and they didn't have much to say back, beyond acknowledging receipt of my message. They're a great company. The Focals I own (SoloBe) are less harsh and I've heard great things about Neumann's KH series, but haven't played with them just yet.
@gurtana
@gurtana 3 года назад
@@ManchesterMusic I'm curious to know whether you think that perhaps you've mixed so much on the SoloBe that you are so familiar with their sound that the A7X would definitely sound harsher/brigther by comparison? But for those not familiar with the SoloBE, would they notice the harsher top end? Sometimes what our ears atune to over hours and years makes the difference in preference. What sort of music do you mix, btw? And can you see a scenario with a style of music that the A7X would be better suited for?
@ManchesterMusic
@ManchesterMusic 3 года назад
@@gurtana I've been in a lot of rooms with a lot of different monitor set ups, and personally I've had the Solo's for a while, but if you've been to my channel you'll notice I've reviewed other monitors too, like PMC and other Focals. I mix all kinds of stuff, and no matter what the genre you'll want a neutral pair of speakers. Also, I reviewed the Adam S3Vs which do not exhibit a 'hyped' high end. In my testing, I was balancing the A7s between the SoloBe's and a pair of matched NS10s, over and over. Funny enough I reached out to a mastering engineer friend to ask him "is it just me or at the A7s very, very bright". His response "They're notoriously bright, in fact anytime I get a mix and the high end is dull and needs excitement 9/10 times it's because it was mixed on A7s". What he's referring to is that the A7s naturally boost high end to the point where the mixer assumes the top end is adequately bright, when in reality it's not; the speakers colouration misrepresents brightness. All that being said, this is just my opinion. I'm a random RU-vidr. You should go find a pair and listen for yourself and make the determination on your own. If you truly want the A7s, go buy them, you'll probably be happier with them if that's what you really really want.

Perfect review! In the studio, I can see how this slightly playful, flamboyant sound could be highly undesirable in critical, precision work. Let me offer another perspective as an audiophile: Adam A7X are speakers that make everything sound amazing with their slight U-shaped response which has led to them being highly recommended in audiophile circles. The A7X's add just that little bit of cut and slam while still possessing an incredible degree of precision and low distortion for musical enjoyment.Their slightly tipped up sound on the frequency extremes has resulted in them becoming a go-to recommendation over Emotiva and KEF. This makes me wonder why doesn't Adam make a rebadge of these in the consumer market. They make the Martin Logan speakers at your local Best Buy's Magnolia section sound like a mushy, confused joke. I would imagine Adam would sell these by the boatload if they did.

I have not read anything about Adam that would make me buy them over Focal, Genelec or Dynaudio. When I see reviews, only the die hard fanboys consider them flawless. I can ascertain that Focals (shape for example) are better in every aspect. Fact: ribbon drivers crossed to dynamics have more issues than dynamics crossed to dynamics. Upper midrange usually suffers. They end up overcompensating to mask the problem area. Additionally, I find ribbons a specific taste. That is, they are more diffuse and less pinpoint than dynamics.

As an owner of the original A7 monitors (no X, purchased around 2004), I've been very much against the sound of the A7Xs since hearing them the first time. A rapper/engineer buddy of mine with a great room bought them a few years ago, and from the first listen I found them very brittle compared to my A7s' smooth but revealing top end. Also the bass is super boosted (possibly the 2 ports instead of 1) and gets very muddy very fast. While the original A7s aren't a shining picture of a professional monitor (looking to upgrade to the PMC Result6 thanks to your review!) I think they're much closer to neutral. The A7Xs remind me moreso of the sound of friends' KRK Rokit 5s and 7s with that falsely extended and muddy low end and extra bright top.

So, what you're saying is... there is a low shelf, high shelf, and tweeter level calibration controls (3 knobs) on the back of these speakers, but you'd rather criticize the speakers for their factory settings than to calibrate the them for your room? Do you think it's a coincidence that these speakers have 2 calibration knobs for upper frequencies? Your criticism would be justified if the speakers sounded too harsh and the manufacturer didn't provide you with the tools to change that. You didn't even try to match the highs to the sound you're used to in the Focals. Did you even check that the calibration knobs on the back were zeroed? I can't respect this review.

Absolutely 1000% agree with you. Honestly, it's like comparing Apples with Oranges. There is no point to that if as he himself said he did everything he could possibly do to try and get the best possible listening experience from them. Well, he certainly didn't use the adjustment knobs on the back and he then complains that they sounded too harsh on the high end. It could have also been his room playing a role in that in the first place or the monitor's placement. But seriously, if you're going to compare a set of monitors against some others than at least first make sure you bring one set as close as possible to any other for as much as you can possibly do, whether it's adjusting the knobs on the back or using correction software like Sonarworks Reference 4. Really disliked the review for your same reason

Let's put it that way: IT IS NOT AN HONEST OPINION about #AdamAudio A7X - IT IS JUST AN OPINION, AND YET VERY SUBJECTIVE ONE. This presentation is about "Manchester Music" own ears, own space, own speaker placement, own taste. The only disappointment here is not about the monitor's quality, but about the way a personal disappointment is presented like it should be the final and only way to see those Adam's monitors. Truly, totally wrong way to make a statement about any kind of products. Thumbs down. And I do not have A7Xs if you ask me. Use your own ears to choose what please you. Use audio monitors soft/hardware calibration for proper setup, use room treatment, proper placement in space you have, and so, you'll be all happier and most efficient while mixing.
@ManchesterMusic

My opinions aren't dishonest. But I agree that my video shouldn't be anyone's 'final word' on the A7Xs. Listen to a diversity of opinion and voices but it's critical that folks use their judgement when making such a substantial financial purchase. If you can, get into a speaker store or see if they'll let you rent them for a day to try out in your own space. Monitors are like shoes: just cause you see everyone wearing a pair doesn't mean they'll fit your feet perfectly..you have to try on a few to find the right ones for you.

@@ManchesterMusic Hi, my response was based on what @Ali Bekir Kılıçkaya says: "(...) thank you for your honest opinion" I wanted to point out that your opinion is just an opinion. @Ali Bekir Kılıçkaya uses words like you're the honest one, and the others are biased or dishonest, or we cannot trust in their opinions. Also, you compare $749.99 (each) Adam 7x to as much as twice the price $1,499.00 (each) Focal Solo Be 6 (28th of September 2021Sweet Water price) which is a substantial difference - obviously not the same price category. So, as I am a curious guy, I went to a specialized shop with a cello player, with a very fine ear (obviously haha) who also knows sound treatment and audio engineering. And we've listened to many set-ups, ADAM 7x and Solo Focal included. And ADAM 7x where in his top 3 choices. Solo Focal was not on the final choice list. So you see, it's all personal opinions.

Honestly? You said you did everything you could have possibly done to get the best listening experience possible from them, yet when you have compared them towards your other monitors you haven't bothered in tweaking the 3 knobs on the back of the A7Xs. And then you complain that the tweeters sounded far too bright, far too overpowering. But you haven't bothered to manually trying to make them sound more close to your other speakers. So either your ears or even your room or maybe even your monitors placement might have played a role in that all together. When using speakers especially from different brands you need to calibrate each and every one of them, being with just using the adjustment knobs on the back or with a room correction software like Sonarworks Reference 4. Your complaint like someone else said here in the comments too would have been fair if the manufacturer gave you no option whatsoever for you to make changes to the speaker in terms of tonal balance, but since there are 3 fricking knobs on the back of the Adam A7X, a low shelf, a high shelf and a tweeter level, well I think that on its own is already a very powerful set of tools for you to make your monitors sound just right, even without necessarily using Sonarworks Reference 4. Disliked this video's for this reason.

Original Adam a7 tweeters vs the Adam A7x tweeters. A7 originals had shorter stroke tweeters to allow the bright high end to mellow out in the room with distance. Your disatance of monitors has to be at least 2 meters away or 5-8 feet. It worked for me with both versions cause of the build quality, being to rigid. So like a race car built to last you got to lower the rev's by pulling the distance back and lowering the Db on the high end so that these near fields will work for you. Don't be like a BMW and wear the parts out faster. The a7x is much like a BMW. Factory setting doesn't mean riding it out like a f1 car.

they are not too bright...that was a urban myth created. what happens is they have weak lowmids which then makes the highs pop up. They have insane quality mids and high clarity but if you work with heavy bass music you ll have to find a way to bring up that lowmid which is a variable based on the room you work on, a mix of acoustic treatment, speaker placement and the eq control room at the back. Listen people, be done once and for all with all the useless internet reviews of audio gear, with all the utterly useless demos of speakers in whatever stores, be done with all the ignorant subjective evaluations that cannot be replicated, hence they can't form the ground on which the very formation of an opinion is possible.

@@ManchesterMusic Pretty much yes, if that's your only problem with a set of speakers. I mean, you hear people, mostly coming from the so-called "audiophile" ranks, complaining about the top-end of monitor speakers sounding harsh or too bright, or that these kind of speakers are not for music listening e.t.c. At the same time, these same persons listen to untreated rooms with uncalibrated, way over-priced pieces of furniture like Harbeth, for Heaven's sake, but think that they are entitled to make ill-informed statements like these. The high frequencies, like everyone knows, can indeed very easily be managed with minimal effort. The real hell begins from the Schroeder Frequency (unique to every room, need to be specifically calculated) and below (roughly, I think, it's around 300 Hz or so in most cases), there you have huge waves canceling each other, standing waves/bass boosts in one place, huge dips in another, a real mess which smears the perception of the complete frequence range, and not just that of the first few octaves : you can't have an accurate representation of the mid and high range, if you don't get your lows right. And that latter is the harder thing to do, since it requires a huge amount of acoustic treatment, sufficiently sized and built basstraps in every corner and so forth. It's like you have 80 % of the thing fucked up and you complain about the tiny 5 % regarding the tweeter. Getting the perspective straight on this one is valuable, in my opinion. After all, you can switch the HF EQ on the back of the speaker down 2 or 4 db, no? Let alone the fact that ribbon tweeters are in general much less fatiguing to the ear over long listening sessions over others, say the "traditional" dome-shaped for example. So, thanks for your attention sir, and excuse me if in my first comment I came off like a feisty jerk!

I’m pretty proud of the treatment in my room, nothing close to that of a mastering engineers spot - not that your want that level of absorption when mixing - but it’s pretty good with the bass traps, side panels and what not (you can see in other videos I’ve made). For nearly a week I’d been A/B-ing the A7s against my Focal SoloBe’s and everything from 5K - and up on the Adams was piercing comparatively. Which is surprising. I’d tested the SV3s not a month early and had no problems with their tweeters, in fact I found them pretty silky. Yes indeed you can adjust the “tweeter level” EQs on the back, which I mentioned in the video, but at A7X’s price point, and given their heritage, I expected an more even tonal balance. But hey, just one “random internet reviewers” opinion.
