Not the most beautiful watch? I have to disagree. I was not looking for a dive watch, but I saw a picture of this one and I was hooked. I now have three. When viewed from an angle, there is something captivating about the shape of the bezel on the NY0040 and even on the later NY008 series (which is almost identical.) Subsequent Citizen divers lose some of the beauty of the NY0040 because they enlarge and alter the curvature of the bezel. Let's face it, there are many dive watches out there that perform as well or better than this watch for around the same price. It's precisely because this is a unique and beautiful watch that so much attention has been paid to it.
The lowest price you can find it in Europe now, is around 180 Euros. Most stores sell it for 200-220 euros. In a big retail store i found this Citizen ny0040 for 305 Euros!!! I bought it 1 year ago for 150 E. This model consider to be one of the best watches of Citizen and the price will go up as the time goes by.
I have blue dial.. And love it.. And it has hacking.. Design is in my opinion perfect..uniqe.. Love the 8 o'clock crown.. 120 click bezel and saphire would be great edition to the almost perfect watch.. Orient did a great job with kamasu.. They have saphire and 120 click bezel
Short and precise review, I'd like to mention, that this watch is also ISO 6425 certified, making it a true dive watch. Next to the usual pressure tests it must pass tests like magnetic resistance, shock resistance, thermal shock and the like. If you consider this and take a look at the still affordable price, then this watch is a real bargain. If you want to have a bit more precision you may take a look at the model BN 0150 serie, which is the quartz model with eco-drive. My own watch is running strong for 3 years now and it is about 3 seconds fast in half a year.
@@folksurvival You’re right, the BN150 model is eco-driven and the one I had was very accurate. It is now my nephew’s watch, I gave it to him as he needed a proper watch next to his smart watch. I now own the automatic model NY0090 in black which is about 3 to 5 seconds fast a day. Still impressive for the price range imho. And I really like the looks of both. Maybe I fetch me the eco model again after saving a bit of money.
@@folksurvival The looks of the NY040 are great but the day date complication is pretty small and therefore somehow hard to read for older eyes like mine. The accuracy can be great (see answer above) if you wear the watch constantly and with the new 8204 movement (which is hackable) time correction and control is much easier. And the watch is rather small compared to newer models and without the decompression tables on the bracelet.
I have this in Pepsi….the only issue for me is its a little hard to read Day/Date. Not impossible…it just takes extra time and movement of wrist to read it. Everything else about the watch it spot on…and well done. The bracelet’s diver extension is a real nice feature. But the strap is always an option when diving.
Thanks for the upload. I've been considering buying this watch lately, so have been watching a lot of reviews on it. Your review might be the best I've seen -- really clear and precise. I was hoping to get one with a bracelet, but they seem to be hard to find now.
Wish they made this in quartz/eco. I've been on the hunt for a quartz dive watch. The new seiko sne573 has been on my radar but its compact at 38mm. This would be perfect if only it was quartz.
I'm not 100 percent sure, but I bought a few of the EE's recently and they all had an 8204 movement with hacking (where you can stop the second hand). The older ones had the 8203 without hacking.
@@gillk From what I've read from forum posts including ones I believe pre-date the move to 8204, the double EE is for the European market. But likewise, I'm not 100% sure.
@@thomascrownbuerger Probably right. The only place Citizen lists the NY0040 is on their European websites. I bought 2 from Italy that were EE models. I bought another few EEs on Ebay with English/German days. One did have English/Spanish days, but it's likely it came from Spain. I haven't seen any single Es in recent purchases.
@@gillk I have an NY0085 (slightly different markings on dial; whiter lume w/ blue glow; coke bezel). Spanish/English days. Marked as 8203 movement on dial, 8204 on back (with hacking). Nothing really to add to the conversation. ;)
@@thomascrownbuerger Your NY0085 is a beauty. I'm trying to control myself and keep from buying it as I already have the black dial/bezel NY0040 and the fully lumed NY0040. My wife's starting to think I'm nuts!

Hi, my wrist is about 6 inches. I also have a skx in my collection and would say both fit fine. However I feel like the skx wears more dominant on the wrist. Maybe due to the slightly larger thickness or because I wear it on a jubilee in comparison to the ny0040.
@@leonardoswatchlist4040 thank you, I'm afraid skx won't fit me, many people say that citizen is more suitable for small wrists :)If I knew it would fit me, I would buy SKX without thinking.
Hi, This depends from both: how precise the watch is and how much time deviation you are willing to take. Even a middle class watch can run 8 sec fast a day, which would mean almost a minute a week. I case of the Citizen, there is no second hand stop, so the time can't be adjusted precisely in the first place. I hope, I could help you:)
It depends on the movement. I have this watch with the 8204 movement. It’s hackable. So on average I lose no more than 5 seconds a day. So basically 2 minutes a month. End of the month I just put it back 2 minutes. It’s a great watch. Looks good with nato and bracelet, but I did put it on a jubilee bracelet skx style, which I like better than the original citizen bracelet meant for this one. I haven’t had a chance to swim or dive with it, but it’s great for timing workouts.
I bought a few. Some run +5 seconds per day while others run +14 seconds fast. It's the luck of the draw. I decided to open mine and regulate them myself. The one I wear is now at about +2 seconds/day on average. I don't plan on diving with it, but if I did it's easy enough to have it resealed and pressure tested by a professional. One thing I'll say is that it's relatively consistent in speed at various positions compared with my Seiko SRPE which varies widely between the face up and crown up positions.
every week absolutely not, if yes, your watch has some problem or maybe you wear it for few hours day so the low power causes a bad accuracy. Usually worn every day requires a 2-monthly adjustment, due the calendar too :)
