In today's video I tell the story of the eight bibles in my collection. Hear about why I think the King James Version is superior and the time I bought a brand new bible just to study Calvinism

Your affection for these Bibles is touching. I feel that way about some of my Bibles, too, that enterred my life at particularly significant times. My King James Bible (with the K.J.V. Apocrypha included), leather bound with gold edging, etc. that Oxford University Press published, which I got in the early 1960s when I was in the Navy, is particularly cherishable. It's a church-trotting Bible, not one for deep study, just the text with no notes, I've owned for such a long time. I recently gave it to a friend, asking him to read from it at any funeral or memorial for me when I depart this life. I hope that it makes a difference in his life. At 80 years old now, I won't be around to use it that many more years, anyway, and I do have a nicer Cambridge University Press, leather-bound gold-edged K.J.V. with the Apocrypha included, that is good for toting to church as well as for deeper study and worsehip. There are other BIbles that mean a lot to me, but those K.J.V. Bibles come first!
@inchristwithadrianne
@inchristwithadrianne 9 месяцев назад
It’s amazing that you still have a Bible from the 60’s! That Bible has been with you through quite a lot. I hate to hear you say that you won’t be around much longer. Even at 80 years old God may have 20 or 30 more purpose-filled years in store for you 😊

@geraldparker8125
@geraldparker8125 8 месяцев назад
That Cambridge relatively small K.J.V. Bible with the Apocrypha also includes ALL of the cross references and marginal notes with no omissions or changes that the K.J.V. translators included. Often today these are omitted to various degrees (even if the ones that have nothing to do with the Apocrypha). It includes "The Translators to the Readers" essay, as well. That's why it is good for study as well as for reading and church-trotting.
@geraldparker8125
@geraldparker8125 8 месяцев назад
By the way, the K.J.V. edition mentioned here is not the excellent "New Cambridge Paragraph BIble", but rather an older edition (from the 1990s, I think) that has the verse-by-verse arrangement, not paragraphs. The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible" is superb, but neither hardback edition size is so small as what I describe.

The N.E.V. is among the earlier of these modern translations and paraphrases. It came out after the R.S.V. and was as popular and used in the British Isles as the R.S.V. was in the U. S. of A. and in Canada. There were an awful lot of unbelieving scholars on its translation boards, as there would come to be generally among further translations and paraphrses after it. @@richardjohnson2692

Good morning! I have 40+ bibles in my collection. They have been collected over a period of, well…20+ years. As someone who has a degree in Biblical Studies from a Christian University, I find value in various translations and types of bibles. I truly ❤️ a good study Bible. Wow you practically have a bible library! Do you find that study bibles interfere with personally experiecing revelation? I wanted to get a study bible but I eventually realized that the more I turned to others for interpretation, the less opportunity I had to the Holy Spirit to reveal things to me and help me connect the dots. We still need teachers of course but I found that constant teaching hindered my ability to discern. Has this been your experience at all?

I’m not going to say the exact number of Bibles I own……because I have no idea. What I will say is that I have led Bible studies in church and heard “I would love to have your Bible….your notes are great”. (Some of those people have no idea they will actually eventually receive the one they longed for). I also have children/grandchildren that will have a hard time dividing my collection until they figure out certain ones have been dedicated to each one of them (notes in the front of each will make it clear). Verses underlined, highlighted, aha moments circled, post-it notes applied and my personal thoughts related to them individually along with personal prayers for that child prayed over them in all seasons. I may have a large collection but they have each have a purpose and there’s a note in the front of each as to their purpose and who I hope will be blessed as much as each Bible blessed me while I soaked up and applied everything I could to God’s glory. I also buy up the inexpensive pew versions when they go on sale and hand them out to those in need with certain verses applicable to times of trouble, loneliness, testing, etc tabbed already. There is no problem having a “stash” of Bibles as long as they help you grow in knowledge and faith and you pass that knowledge along. It’s only a problem if they become dust catchers.
@inchristwithadrianne
@inchristwithadrianne Год назад
@@nanasmakingmemories6775 Wow! I love that! The idea of praying over each child/grandchild and having those prayers in the bible designated for them is so precious. I'll have to save that idea to implement in the future. I agree that as long as they're not collecting dust there's nothing wrong with a sizeable collection. I just feel a little guilty sometimes because I think about people who don't even have 1 bible.
@SaneNoMore
@SaneNoMore Год назад
@@nanasmakingmemories6775 Very Nice. You make me really consider changing my practise. In fact I just ordered a journaling Bible because of your post (it takes very little convincing to get me to buy a Bible lol). I still buy BIbles every month to fill out my study bible collection and I will likely keep doing that until I have all the ones I want, but I NEVER mark in them. I use to but then years ago I realized most of my Bibles would outlive me so I stopped marking in them so that those who come after me would have nice clean Bibles to use. Of the 80 odd Bibles I currently have only 2 have any marks in them and they are 2 I have an extra "clean" copy of. Even then I have only highlighted certain study notes and some passages and not written any personal notations in them. I also realized long ago that if I highlight and write notes in my Bibles when I go back and read them again I tend to see the same things I did the first time through because I pay attention to the highlights and notes. When I read a 'clean' Bible I often notice little things I never noticed before because I am not drawn back into the previous study highlights and notes. I think though I will use that newly ordered journaling Bible to keep all my study notes in. I saw notes as lowering the book value (they do) and being a distraction to anyone else who used that Bible to study (they can be). I never considered that someone might profit from my notes or might actually be interested in reading my personal reflections and study notations.

I just found this video, but I like KJV because it has such a long history - most of the classic preachers (Wesley for me as methodist, spurgeon, etc) had this versin and so many saints gone on before me used this Bible and I like reading it aloud sometimes to say aloud the same words they did - it also makes me slow way down and explain to myself what I'm reading, and it's a challenge to myself. I usually use a more modern translation though but still grab KJV - it's easier the longer I spend in it and it has a reverance and respect 'sound' to it IMO

Buy a KJV and start reading it. Yes there will be verses that are different to follow, but most are very similar. Open both and you can refer to both. I've been reading the KJV for over 30 years. It has a history that is worth the trouble to read. Believers were called Christians first in Antioch and that is where we get the line of the traditional text from. The opposition was the Alexandrian text, where we get the tradition of the opposing text. God bless!

Hello new to your channel. Been binge watching bible collection videos. Looking for a new bible for 2024. I commute with my journal the word bible in KJV. I want to commit to memory only the verses from this edition only. People died for the privilege to read this edition of text. Children read from this text. My mom taught me when I was in fourth grade that if I can read KJV in English and the Spanish equivalent I would able to read and understand anything put in front of me. I am not good with grammar though. I am purchasing the pray the scripture bible. It is out of print and ppl asking for a ridiculous amount of money for a glued bible made in china. It is single column and will be used strictly for prayer. I will highlight every prayer in that bible. I will tab prayer topics, I am sure based on the dimensions it will be lighter than my journaling bible. Finally I write bible study chain with the key in the back of the Bible and donate them through out my neighborhood. Also I give Bible while traveling so I always have a gift Bible on hand to give away. I am walking around with two bibles minimum. I forget my phone at times but I don’t leave home without my sword. My collection is bigger than yours for sure. But I read and use them and complete them within a calendars year. People collect shoes, purses or eyeshadow palettes. I do however own other translations but 90 percent if my library is KJV and i love it. Not gonna drift from the KJV but I do like the CSB, the Amplified, and the NKJV. Thanks for subscribing! I am truly amazed by the vast collections that so many people have. Part of me would love to collect more, part of me feels bad to have so many bibles when some people don’t have one. I think I will add to my collection when I have children in the future but for now I’m keeping it small. As far as study methods, I don’t have a particular system that I follow. My greatest method is actually just practicing reading comprehension skills when I study the Bible. Making sure I understand the verses in their proper context is a biggie. Who is the author, who is the audience, what issue is being addressed, how does this book relate to the other works in the testament that it’s in, how does it relate to the bigger picture, how does it apply to me today, connecting themes in the passage I’m reading to themes in other books as the Holy Spirit brings things to my remembrance, noticing patterns in the writers though process, noticing when a verse echos the sentiment of other verses in scripture, etc. etc. So context is foundational but also recognizing the multitude of meanings and applications is important. Once I understand what a verse means in context then I can also consider how the principle may apply in a different contexts. The literal meaning vs the metaphorical meaning vs the spiritual meaning. So that’s it 😂 It’s both simple and complex. Reading comprehension and listening to the Holy Spirit is all I have.

You are doing the essentials as first priority! Great! I have a lot of Bibles in a wide range of English translations, but I use them for now-and-then reference when I feel confuseed or a bit mystified. I don't use them regularly. Also, I am a member of some Bible societies and thus I keep them on hand to refer to in controversies. When I need them, they are there, but it is the K.J.V., the Douay-Rheims-Challoner, and the N.K.J.V. that get the most regular use. @@inchristwithadrianne

I read the BIble frequently in German, and it is Luther's first text (which I have in a beautiful facsimile edition) and the best of his own revisions of it during his own lifetime that are normative for me. I distrust the later revisions of the Luther Bible. I have read the Swiss Reformation N.T. a few times as well; it is a lovely translation in piquant German, of the Swiss sort, and Zwingli translates much the same way as Luther did , despite how different their theological positions were.

KJV was a commission from a King, wanting his subjects not be able to understand the Bible… just because it’s in “fancy” wording, doesn’t mean it’s superior; means it’s snobby. That being said, I want people to read the translation that inspires them to read the Bible! 💗💗🙌🏼🙏💕 love and blessings

Those who have studied the KJV and have also studied other translations without bias know that it’s greatness has nothing to do with the old English, though is does make it feel “fancy” as you would say. All translations are not created equal. That’s just reality. However, I never said KJV is the ONLY translation worth reading, just that it’s the best. First does not equal only ⬅️ And that right there, is a prime example of the kinds of subtleties your mind becomes trained to recognize when you read the KJV. Your ability to differentiate/distinguish becomes more refined because of the word choice and sentence structure. But don’t take my word for it, taste and see 🤷🏽‍♀️

I myself am a Methodist (with some Baptist tendencies), and I'm rather familiar with the RSV from growing up. (Cokesbury is run by the United Methodist Church - saw that on your RSV.) Holman makes some bibles with index tabs that aren't terrible but I'm not really a fan of index tabs. I actually prefer the RSV myself apart from a few specific issues (which are probably the same reasons you prefer the KJV), but for practical reasons I stick to the KJV most of the time. I've got way too many bibles - a lot of them were bought to review or were gifts - but I try to distribute my use among them. (I've given away prolly a couple dozen bibles and still have a ridiculous number. Some are specifically to give away but I have no means to give them away. A lot of them, too, are dangerous in the hands of the unlearned, and so I keep them to prevent others from having their faith ruined by them.) Agreed: a cell phone is just not an adequate substitute for having that physical book in your hands. I actually have that exact journalling bible (Nelson Journal the Word)! Though the one I usually use (which is actually the very bible I take to church most weeks) is a bit larger and the note space is unruled.

You are right about the enduring value and sheer importance, spiritually, literarily, and docetrinally, of the Authorised "King James" Version of the Bible. I have numerous other versions, but few count for anything like as much as the A.V. Bible (K.J.V. with Apocrypha). It is the norm. Of other versions, only the Douay-Rheims-Challoner Bible and the Confraternity New Testament (0f the early 1940s) carry sine if such weight, but the K.J.V. (A.V.) rules supreme! My K.J.V. New Cambridge Paragraph Bible is my favourite edition (apart from personal and sentimental reasons) of it. I wish that my Lutheran Study Bible (Concordia Pub. House), my favourite annotated Bible, were a K.J.V. Bible (for it is of the E.S.V. ), but the K.J.V. is never far from me when I study the Scriptures.

@geraldparker8125
@geraldparker8125 9 месяцев назад
Yes, I do find the Apocrypha to be normative and scriptural. It was far to late by the time of the Reformation to be pontificating otherwise. I've read the Apocryphal books over and over, and they seem pretty darn amazing to me. The prophecies in Baruch, for example, or the doctrine in the Wisdom of Solomon clearly are leading to the writings of the New Testament itself. On the other hand, I can see why mission-oriented publishers and organisations omit the Deuterocanon from their publications of the Old Testament. Given how much antagonism there is to the Deuterocanon, to encourage the propagation of writings that so many Christians call into doubt on the mission field may be unnecessarily divisive and propitious to exploit in such settings. However, editions of the A.V. (K.J.V.) for normal use really ought to include the "Apoorypha". @@inchristwithadrianne

I took great loving care of that Navy K.J.V. Bible of mine. I handled it gently and, back in civilian life, used it as one of several editions of the K.J.V. Bible in my personal library. I especially used it to carry to church services with me. So, although it was in frequent use, it was not my only K.J.V. Bible. It still looks quite new and has no physical wear of consequence visible upon it, despite such long and continuous use. It was, also, of excellent quality, so it would resist even somewhat abusive use (which I aoivded giving it, handling it tenderly).

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I have a “readers” bible that I use for strictly reading (the format is NOT suitable for study as they eliminate all distractions of verse indicators, subheadings, footnotes and references). I have compact bibles in multiple translations for traveling to church because I have 3 kids and often drop the bigger bibles if I bring them. I have one wide margin bible to take ALL of my notes in… it’s the only one I’ll write in (all the others I may only highlight with colored pencils). I have a bible in Spanish and one in my husband’s language (a lesser-known indigenous one). I have two study bibles, one dedicated for Women and one dedicated to Christian apologetics. I’m not a big study bible person but it doesn’t hurt to have a couple in the mix. Last but not least, I have a very small collection of thinline bibles that I use, but plan on passing down to my kids or someone to in need in the future. I do not like relying on digital format as a primary source and personally need to have physical copies in order for me to truly benefit in my studies. Like another commenter stated, I believe it is necessary to have physical copies on hand anyway incase of the very real threat of Bibles/Christianity becoming outlawed in this country’s near future. My favorite translations I switch between are KJV/NKJV, NASB & ESV. I very occasionally use CSB only when reading the old testament events for better clarity. Because sometimes the events confuse me. And yes, I use all of my bibles…. they are not purchased in vain, LOL!!! 😊 (Side note… I accidentally posted this comment on another video, l and didn’t have the guts to take it down after the channel member commented so if you happen to come across this exact comment elsewhere I promise I’m not a bot 😂)

I’ve never read the RSV as I mentioned in the video, so whatever is missing from it has nothing to do with me. If it is a poor translation as you say, it is a shame that I received it, but why are you “shocked”?Do you not know that many will be deceived in the end times? Disappointment in the failings of the church is an appropriate response. Anger is an appropriate response. But shock is not. Don’t be surprised when the things of which our Lord forewarned us come to pass 🤷🏽‍♀️

@@bobvadney7240 I stand corrected, but you sound shocked despite saying that you're not. And while you're busy click clacking paragraphs of commentary on RU-vid Bob, I hope you're equally busy with boots on the ground in the physical, digital and spiritual realm doing WORK to further the gospel of Jesus Christ. Since you are so upset about the mishandling of Gods' word I would presume that means you spend time doing corrective teachings to help propogate the truth? I sure do hope so Bob. Btw, if you're actually invested in getting through to people, and not just proud about being "right", I would suggest you learn how to communicate more effectively 💞

I found your video by chance, Adrianne, and I enjoyed it very much. Like you, I also revere the KJV, but I am definitely not a KJV-onlyist. And I don't know that I would necessarily call the KJV "superior", because it mistranslates Job 17:6. Compare this verse with other translations and you'll see what I mean. But I do love the Elizabethan English and, IMHO, the KJV's rendering of the Psalms is incomparable; although the NKJV (one of my favorites) comes very, very close. If you're interested in a lovely KJV Bible with thumb indexing, may I recommend the Cambridge Concord? (No, I don't work for Cambridge printers - scout's honor!) The Concord is available in a variety of leather bindings and in both red letter and black letter text. However, the thumb indexed Concord is available only in black calf split leather. You can check them out on Amazon or evangelicalbible.com. BTW, as you probably already know, the ESV is an update of the RSV. If you'd like to try an interesting experiment, compare verses between the two versions. You'll be amazed at how many verses are identical. God bless.

Job 17:6 seems like a miss for the KJV :/ that's a bummer... I'm trying to refrain from buying more bibles but yall keep sending me such great recommendations - AHHH! Lol I'll have to reference this when I'm ready to add to my collection. Also, I didn't know that the ESV was an update of the RSV! I've never really read the RSV that I have so I wasn't aware of similarities at all.

@@inchristwithadrianne It's a very minor translation error that doesn't change the gospel message or the plan of salvation, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, Adrianne. Besides, when one thinks about the outstanding translation that the KJV translators produced with the knowledge of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek in their day, one has to marvel at just how accurate the KJV Bible really is. Thank you for responding.

@@rockswapna I agree that words can have different meanings in different time periods, but Job17:6 is most definitely a mistranslation. A tabret is a very early version of a tambourine. What were the KJV translators thinking here? Compare this verse with all other Bible versions and you'll see what I mean.

Luther translated Job more accurately (so far as I can ascertain) and beautifully into German than even the K.J.V. or other English translators did so. The Hebrew apparently is more ancient form of that language than the form of Hebrew anywhere else in the Bible, so no wonder that Job is such a challenge to translate, then or now. @@inchristwithadrianne
