Comparison of the new Nikon D7200 and the Nikon D7100 specifically focusing on the area of ISO testing.
Lens : Tamron 70-200 @ 135mm f/6.3
All raw files from this video can be found here:
Here is a comparison of the new Nikon D7200 against it's older brother the Nikon D7100 in HIGH ISO testing!
Spoiler: D7200 has better high iso capability, but worse low iso than it's older brother the D7100. Happy to report the buffer has been increased quite a bit, and the horrible banding in shadows is GONE!
6FPS shooting when in 12bit Raw mode, 5FPS in 14bit Raw. Will you notice a difference between 12 & 14bit? Probably not.

WARNING On the first set of image displayed, D7200 had significantly less light (either due to the shutter speed or the lighting source). Go to minute 5:12, you will see that the D7100 has a much stronger highlight on the metal thing. This thus prooves this analysis wrong, the light wasn't equal and thus it made it seem as if the shadows were handled much better by the D7100. One last thing to take into account, the focus wasn't the same for both cameras, on 5:12, look at the bottom of the picture, see how more blurry the bottom is for the D7100.

+yop poy Exactly what I thought. The images on the D7100 are just a bit brighter thus giving the impression there's more detail in the shadows.

More likely the quantum efficiency of the D7100's Toshiba sensor is a bit higher than that of the D7200's Sony sensor, producing brighter images on the D7100 at the same exposure as the D7200. More info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_efficiency

Are you for real? if you wait until 5:15 you will see that the reason the bottom of the image was blurry was because it was still loading and that once loaded the focus and lighting were the same.

Nicely done review. FY: The D750 is recording considerably larger files to buffer. However, it should keep pace with a camera from the same manufacturer sold at half the price.

Your high iso comparison test is excellent. I sold my D7100 due to the disappointing performance at iso 3200 and purchased the new D7200 which is excellent at iso 4000 and 5000. The D7200 is a also good match for the Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8. I do a lot of low light action shots and I am very pleased with the D7200.

I like the iso performance comparaison on a full view in on 1:1 scale it let you see noise more clearly .... most reviewers do that with the image on full screen it kinda make sense .... its classic way of viewing an image ... but having this approach two help a lot ....
@haidukul

From what I see on my screen it seems that the D7100 overexposes a bit comparing with D7200. I think that this is why the shadow areas are a bit darker in the D7200. If you loot at the writing so the third camera, especially the lenses you see more clarity at the D7200. Might be the lenses used...
@Romanujan

I have downloaded the sample RAWs. According to exiftool 9.95 the D7200 RAWs are 12bit compressed, while the D7100 RAWs are 14bit compressed (and one can clearly see, that your D7100 RAWs take noticeably more disk space). Please use the same settings for BOTH cameras - otherwise, the comparison is not fair. Also, I would suggest to use uncompressed RAWs - unless you can prove that both cameras use exactly the same compression algorithm (the algorithm, not the format!)
@shutternutternation
@shutternutternation 9 лет назад
***** Yes I see that too! I plan on making a follow up video with the D7200 and D7100 to confirm if these results are accurate or not. I do know each camera was writing in loss-less compressed. The difference between the 12bit and 14bit doesn't affect dynamic range, it affects color depth, but you are correct in saying both should have identical settings to be 100% fair. I can't get another review done on both until I return from France around the beginning of August, and move all my equipment to my new studio so stay tuned!
@StevenBrener
@StevenBrener 8 лет назад
+ShutterNutter Nation I believe the difference is most noticeable in the shadow details when comparing 12 and 14 bit files. I believe that the test is most likely compromised because of the difference in bit depth, especially in the shadow region, giving an advantage to the camera with the higher bit depth.

Hi! Nice video! Thank you very much, i now have more knowledge about the D7200 iso performace. I see that this brand new body is so much better then my D7000. Can you please do a comparison between this two bodies? D7200 and D7000? I dont understand why nobody is doing it. D7200 & D7100 are almost identical. I think theres so many photographers that wan to upgrade from their D7000 (like me) to a new body but can't decide wich is the next step to do: A Full Frame (like d610) or the new D7200 DX that anyway has so much potential in terms of performance and Costs.

@shutternutternation
@shutternutternation 9 лет назад
suman bhattacharyya Avoid the banding issues? Shoot at low ISO's and make sure your shots are properly exposed when you take them so you don't have to bump the exposure in post; even shoot to the right (slightly overexpose) so you can bring it down in post which will help preserve shadow detail while minimizing banding issues). Other than that, not a whole lot.

Thanks for this,would have liked more detail about the AF,you say no noticeable improvement,i would be looking for improvement over the D7100 with the Tamron 150-600 in less than perfect conditions.
@shutternutternation
@shutternutternation 9 лет назад
I'd like to do a comparison as well. The couple days I had this camera just wasn't enough to get to the AF in detail, but using a 150-600 every bit of improvement helps. I think the improvement in high iso (since you'll have to put that up anyways), plus the increased sensitivity of the autofocus would make this camera better suited for the tammy than the D7100.

i know there DX and FX but how is the ISO compare with the D7200 D750 is it worth paying the more for the ISO ?
@shutternutternation
@shutternutternation 9 лет назад
It all depends on how critical High ISO performance is for you. The D750 being $1100 more than the D7200 is quite the price jump. Is the image quality alone worth 1100? No not at all, but then again the D750 is way overpriced (although grey markets D750's are around $1250)... You may be better off grabbing a used D610.
@jonathanpgreen
@jonathanpgreen 9 лет назад
ShutterNutter Nation thanks ive been looking at the D610 as price but "if" im paying 850 on a D610 then why not 1200 for the D750 and as the focusing being better and iso etc (brain going to pop) been looking for so long (forgetting price its do i "need" the D810 but the D750 gets all the wow at the mo but then if the D610 will "do the job ok" ........ (the reason i was looking at the D7200 is ive got the D7000 and just wonted to rule out the D7200 before paying out)

@jons9877 9 лет назад
Jonathan Green If you haven't purchased anything yet there are rumors of a $300 price drop on the D750. So maybe hold off a little longer and see if that's true. I will say the D750 is a very nice camera. It's a joy shooting at 8000 ISO and still have useable images.

You can look at image comparisons by Lensvid that show this video to be wrong. The D7200 blows away the D7100 at 100 ISO and on up higher. The image quality is much better on the D7200 when a test is conducted properly.
@usfyasin

Not true. Lensvid compares jpegs ih his video and of course jpegs are better due to new processor. I compared RAW files from that video and D7200 doesn't have any improvements over D7100 in terms of high ISO quality.

Yep, I downloaded Lensvid's RAW files and saw no significant difference in noise and image quality between D7100 and D7200 shots up through ISO 6400. Use ACR to apply a -0.15 exposure correction to the D7100 shots and you'll find it hard to tell them apart.

@369people

isnt dynamic range supposed to be having more darks and more darks ,instead of turning darjs into mids like a d7100 does here,i think d7200 is better in dynamic range by definition,thats why the banding is soo faster at 1600 iso itself
@yoshicatgod
@yoshicatgod 9 лет назад
At 6 min 42, iso 1600, have a look at the white text on the side of the lens/ filter. The D7200 is much sharper. Maybe the lens plays a role in this
@shutternutternation
@shutternutternation 9 лет назад
yoshicatgod The focus could have been slightly different. Each body didn't have any fine AF adjustments applied to them, even though it was focused at the same spot, even a slight shift in the focal plane can cause visual problems. I'm looking at getting another D7200 in my hands to do a most in depth ISO comparison with difference scenarios etc, and to verify if the D7200 does have worse DR at lower ISO's than the D7100 because there is data out there that suggests otherwise. Stay tuned and thanks for the comment!

ShutterNutter Nation I also saw, that the D7200 was defocused too much to the front, so that the discussed details are already slightly defocused. Also, the Exif data reveal, that you were in manual focus mode for the D7200 (as opposed to automatic for the D7100). Unlikely scenario: an interested party paid you for this manual defocusing tweak ;) No, the more likely scenario: shit just happens, this kind of things happens to me all the time as well. Or you focused manually with the best intentions, but the naked eye through the viewfinder just is not good enough when doing pixel peeping afterwords, in the era of 24 megapixels. Or you were actually focusing on a detail to the front of your three-dimensional still scene. Second flaw: you saved the D7100 in 14 bit resolution, but the D7200 only in 12 bit, according to the metadata. No surprise, that the D7D00 starts to lack information in the very darkest tones. Because these two bits play a role there, the high dynamic range of the D7x00 makes them step into these two bits. OK, these are two mistakes in a row, working against the D7200, but let's still assume they were unintentional. At least this resolves the contradiction, that at dpreview, the D7200 seems to show off a top-of-the-breed detail performance in the darkest tones w/o any flaws versus its competitors. Actually, there's another guy at youtube, which makes a similar detail loss claim: Theoria Apophasis. I verified visually, that he front-fokused his D7200 as well, so that details in discussed areas lost detail and appeared slightly blurry, as well.

IS the banding produced by the 7100 really an issue if you're properly exposing your photos? Not just boosting stuff? The cost of the 7200 doesn't seem worth the upgrade.
@echt114
@echt114 7 лет назад
Banding shows at high ISO and when shadows are brightened. On a sunny day the brightest and darkest areas in the frame are often too much for any camera to capture, so people typically expose for highlights and boost the shadows. That's where you can see banding, depending on how much you brighten them. And of course at high ISO like in his video.

The sensor of the d7100 makes images +0.25 to +0.50 more brighter...thats the whole thing,i have tested some images and there is no difference...d7200 is cleaner,sharper,betterl colors,better iso..but not worse dynamic range... Jpeg from www.imaging-resource.com/ and i have made it black and white to be identical all the material,and then i have boosted +2 the exposure for the both photos: drive.google.com/file/d/0B-HfC2HF7LuZVk0yeWY5emRRZ2M/view?usp=sharing 100% crops drive.google.com/file/d/0B-HfC2HF7LuZRFpycVZjMG42VWc/view?usp=sharing Maybe in Raw is different story,but i do not believe...

Agree with comments, there isn´t more details in shadows, the d7200 have less light than 7100. So all the excercise makes no sense. If you are going to create an opinion based on a single test, you should be very perfectionist. Same lightsource, same exposure, same focus point, same aperture, same iso.

Just run into this review, in try to confirm my search on this subject. Disregard this review. For some reason, pictures in this review made by D7100 are overexposed. It's clearly visible on the shelf plank front. Pictures made by D7100 are clearly overexposed by 1/3 of a stop. D7100 should not appear. One of the heaviest Nikon's duds. Few days ago I have tested one D7100 and it had worse level of noise comparing to my D7000 in the range of 100 to 400 ASA. I mean the noise in the shadows. Of course if you shoot bright lighted scene, technical level of the quality would be indistinguishable from D7200. But nobody would pay just 200 bucks of euros less just to shoot in bright light. D7200 rules at the moment. Maybe Nikon has learn how to cope with Toshiba's sensors or vice versa.

My brand new D7200 is plagued with 25-30 black and gray specks after only having it a week and taking about 400 shots. I have had the same 35mm 1.8G lens on it since it arrived. I'm crushed! This will most likely be a deal breaker for me, unfortunately. Nikon is having way too many problems and I feel that I can no longer trust these cameras. Maybe D7200 is the loser anyway due to BLACK AND WHITE pictures at highest ISO with start at 51 400. That really sucks. D7100 can at least take normal pictures at highest ISO (25 600).

rendezvous009 certainly not junk. Significant improvements over 7100. AF 51 points tracks movement extremely well, better battery, sensor better (likely SONY), WiFi, NFC, buffer. Still sealed body. Higher useful ISO, B&W ultra high ISO, Better and newer LCD screen.....etc. etc. There are much more complete reviews elsewhere. This is a much better camera than the 70D and significantly improved over the D7100
