Auto-eject and buttstock ammo carrier make this rifle very interesting and useful indeed. Practice keeping the weapon shouldered, letting the brass fly past your left ear, keeping your eye on target, retrieving ammo from the stock, chambering a fresh round & closing the action. It's in the running with a repeater. Pretty cool, pretty mean.
I put a Nikon Prostaff BDC 3-9x40 on my H&R 45-70. I've put about 100 rounds through it, using the Hornady 325grain LeverEvolution rounds and it's still holding true. I hit a 10 inch steel square plate at 300 yards using the BDC circle. I absolutely love this setup.
The transfer safety bar does not block the hammer from hitting the firing pin. When the trigger is pulled, the transfer bar moves up into place and fills the gap between the hammer and the firing pin allowing the firing pin to move forward and strike the primer and set off the round. The older models with the rebounding hammer had a safety issue where if you dropped a loaded rifle, or if it fell over, and struck the hammer hard enough the rifle would go off.
I bought an ultra hunter stainless 45-70 in the spring. The chaimber was so short I got a round stuck in it that I used in my Marlin fore years. I have owned 2 H&R rifles and had to get my money back bouth times. For me I think their JUNK.
+Fat Tony Del Ecousse If you are refering to changing barrels H&R no longer offers the barrel program. If they reopen it you have to send the gun back in to have the new barrel matched. H&R has stopped production of the Handi Rifles last year unfortunately. You may find one sitting in a gun store tucked away on a corner shelf.
IMHO I dont think they were made to be the most refined gun. I think the selling point was the interchangable barrels. All kid and you can even make it a shootgun. It was kind of a jack of all trades not the master of one.

The parent company NEF (remington/ marlin/ para/ bushmaster/ others) is working on a consolidated manufacturing plan with no current word on if the Handi rifles will resume production. I like my Handi in 45/70 and suggest it if you find one.
I don't get the point of a "fail safe" safety on a single action, single shot, type of rifle. Not cocking the hammer should be safe enough. And 45-70 looks like it would kick like a Clydesdale horse! I had one in 12 Gauge many years ago. Any idea about getting a new caliber barrel fit?
+archangel20031 The transfer bar is there so it only goes off when the trigger is pulled and stays pulled. If the hammer is cocked and the gun is dropped on the ground and the hammer disengages from the sear, the gun will not go off.If your thumb slips while cocking the hammer, the gun will not go off
Well i never made a claim it was" valuable" Just that for its purchase price, its serving well Im sure you have better of a 45/70 but mine suites me Its taken game and won shooting matches, out shooting Sharps, and marlins in same caliber, your opinion is yours, but lets see what you have for a 45/70 Post pic ? Be fair
The older pre Remington guns are better fit and finish Remington has crappy quality control, I know a friend who Has a newer one. Very poor fit and finish Now as for 45 acp, I'd say no 4570 is a rimmed cartridge and alot longer than 45 acp Also the acp runs a 452 Dia bore, the 4570 is 458 Accuracy would be not so gd
Air rifle scope on a hard kicking 45/70 lol. Nice scope rings too. Lol spend a few bucks for a nice set up. I have one I shoot open sights it's a deer killer brush gun
This comment proves you know nothing about an air rifle scope. I myself have had a Centerpoint air rifle scope on my Marlin 1895 45-70 for 4 years. Air rifle scopes are built stronger to handle vibration. I am not saying that there aren’t more quality scopes available, just saying that there is nothing wrong with this setup.
Haha i like that you americans only talks about amercan brands, i sounded like you meant that leupold should be a good/ hi quality scope! Try anything from europe and you will never use some american made stuff ever again. I had a marlin 1895 45-70 pre rem with a leupold vx III, sold it because it was crap and bought a blaser r93 with a khales helia 5 2,4-12x56. That is what I should call quality 👍
Oh boy the great Euro crap, give me a break we got Grizzly bears running around in woods here in the Rockies and I want a mans gun in 4570 to take me not some hoitty toitty sissy gun !
