Happy 2023 to everyone! Ever wanted to take a telescope on vacation with you… but you’re flying there and not driving? You need an instrument considerably smaller and lighter than the 8” Dobs and SCTs so many online sources recommend. This tiny 60mm refractor might be your answer. 3.25 pounds and under 10” long when collapsed, it’s the size of a telephoto zoom camera lens, yet offers a generous 360mm focal length, and pristine “diamonds on black velvet” star fields that refractors are known for. Equally at home for visual or astrophotography uses, this 60mm scope punches well above its weight class, and may be your best option on a trip to dark skies involving air travel (or even if space is at a premium in your car’s trunk).

That's why I got one (a different vendor but same scope), because of the portability. I'll worry about getting a big dobsonian when I get a house with a yard. For road trips to dark sky parks I like having a portable scope, mount, my camera, my tent, a chair all in the trunk of my car. I can be setup and relaxing while waiting for it to get dark. Very peaceful and relaxing without breaking a sweat.

It took me quite awhile to realize my F/9 was not so grab and go and so i got a 62mm from another company and its a monster. Happiness is a great apo refractor !! AND a 16.5XW -its kinda serendipitous a new XW (at 85degrees no less!) has come out. The Lord blesses.

I got on a cheaper and lighter side: SVBony sv501p 60mm/400mm with good eyepieces and dielectric diagonal gives great views under Bortle 3 and even 8. But yes, 60mm can show a lot. I even use its cheap tripod because it weights only 0.5kg. And also use similar photo gripod with ballhead as AZ Mount. With 1.25 diagonal I get almost 3.6 degrees of FOV which is fantastic. Still it surprises me how much can be observed with tiny short refractor.

Mike, Astronomics doesn't make their Astro-Tech scopes in China. They have many of the components made in Taiwan or in-house and assembled in Norman OK. Bet that scope doesn't say where it was made. I think because many of the parts are made in Taiwan or contracted through there to China, but shipped from Taiwan. So they do not say where it is made, simply because if they said 'Made in OK' their supplier in Taiwan would get upset. Also Boker knives had a lot of parts made in China and then assembled them in Germany they had to leave the origin off. So some Boker traditional knives have no country of origin just like my friend's Astro Tech 102 has no country of origin.

He did not mention that the focuser come out at least 10/15 cm up to the oculars focal length 😂

This is a valid point. It’s important to mount it well forward in the mount (or use an equatorial mount) and have a slew limit so it doesn’t impact if you’re observing at the zenith
