Hi all, here's a review of my Coronado Personal Solar Telescope. This marvelous little 40mm scope allows you to observe our closest star, the sun. Just 93 million miles away, looking directly at the sun is dangerous and can cause permanent damage to your vision -- but not when you have a specialized H-alpha solar telescope like this one!
This telescope has a special filter, called an "Etalon" that takes the powerful light from the sun and brings it down to a safe Hydrogen-Alpha viewing wave-length that the human eye can safely observe, all day long. Matter of fact, looking at the unfiltered full moon through a telescope can cause more (temporary) discomfort to your eyeball than this solar telescope. It's quite extraordinary. Even more exciting, this solar telescope doesn't cost thousands of dollars, you can find them for under $500 used!

I got to use one of these. It was really cool to see waves that looked like curly hair coming off the sun. I’m told those sun flares are thousands of miles high. Then it can be changed to show dark sun spots instead. A very cool tool.

Still pricey but i didn't know about the connection between Coronado and Lundt. The third main maker is Datestay,or something similar, and I think that they are based on the Isle of Man a semi independent country between England and Ireland.I am not aware of any other makers of these scopes. There's a lot more choice with dedicated white light ones although I just use Baader Solar film afront my refractor.

Where did you get the sun-blocking/eyepiece holder and the vixen extension to attach the PST to the drive? Thanks!

Found similar items at CCTS, however not currently in stock. 🙁

So those two particular items are “fun” to track down… both are sadly discontinued items (at least when I was searching months back), but I hunted them down on the CloudyNights classifieds. A lot of people have them sitting around collecting dust. Got them both for a song.

The best review I’ve seen on this telescope by far. You’ve explained everything I was questioning about this telescope. I was wondering, would i be able to attach a astro camera to this instead of the eyepiece?

You can do so, yep. Ideally a monochrome one, which I don’t currently own.

I would try to take a picture of it with something more modern with better automatic / dynamic contrast, this camera can't do that, it just looks like an LED.. a 1200$ red led

True. The sun benefits from a monochrome CMOS camera, which I don’t currently have.

Can you use any eyepiece on the PST or only specific ones? Thank you

Takes any 1.25" eyepiece you like. All the solar filtration/danger is removed before it gets to the eyepiece, no worries.
