In this video I revisit the Harbor Freight Icon Ratchets. This is the revised 2.0 version if you will. These ratchets originally came out about 18 months ago. When I initially reviewed these ratchets they had issues with the mechanisms locking up prompting a soft recall of all of the 3/8 flex head Icon ratchets nation wide.
Link to the original video on these Icon ratchets: • Icon Ratchet Vs. Snap ...
I'm happy to say that after an 18 month wait the 3/8ths flex head Icon ratchets have been fixed and work flawlessly. This is what these tools should have been from the start. Perhaps Harbor Freight will look into doing some proper testing before releasing tools in the future.

What are your thoughts on these Icon Ratchets guys? So, far this one has been great so far and as you saw in the video, I haven't been gentle to it. Personally, I don't feel like the Snap-On's, Icons or even the Gearwrench's are leaps and bound better than any other ratchets on the market. Mostly it just comes down to personal preference and what feels "right" to you. I like the icon ratchets there not the best but it's the closest your going to get the old days off Sears craftsman where you walk right in and get a new one . Let's face it harbor freight has made leaps and bounds compared to what they sold 15 to 20 years ago . Don't get me wrong they still have some things not worth buying but you take the good with the bad .

I like most of Icon's stuff, for the price point and geographic convenience, I'll take it. Icon is updating all their chrome sockets from chrome vanadium to chrome molybdenum. Which they should have done in the first place. Industry standard among quality tools. The sockets precision were great, better precision than Snap on or SK. But were softer than hot shit. I'll have to abuse all mine and warranty them :p

Enjoyed your honest video! I would like to share with my experience with Snap On ratchets. My Dad used a Snap On 3/8” drive ratchet on his project cars and gifted the ratchet to me as I started my career in Aviation as an aircraft mechanic. That ratchet has been worked daily for many years and has never let me down. I finally cleaned and lubed it up after 30 years of use. It still works fine. I looked up the date code and the ratchet was made in 1958! I think it paid for itself.

That is a great story, and not to discount it, but I have several Craftsman tools I got from my Grandfather. I have a ratchet I have been using for decades now. I just broke one of my 1/4" ones the other day (Honestly I was using too much torque for 1/4" so its partially my fault) and yes it got replaced with a new Chinese Craftsman but to be 100% honest I like it better than the old USA made one. And you know I have alot of Harbor freight tools, they honor their lifetime warranty. 20-30 years ago it wasn't so insane to only buy snap on but today.. today the snap on prices are 10x or sometimes more than a high quality one from harbor freight. It sounds silly, but Harbor Freight really has stepped up their quality if you stick to their high end brands like Icon, Quinn, etc. And even as a professional, I just cannot get behind people spending INSANE amounts of money on snap on tools when there are competitors that offer 90% of the tool at 5-10% of the price.

I purchased the icon large metric racheting wrench set and I had the 18mm fall apart the first time I used it. The retention clip flew out and all the bits fell on the ground. Returned it hassle free and got the exact set as a replacement. Have been abusing them almost daily and no problems since. Not perfect but I have had decent luck with Pittsburgh pro and icon brands. I’ve been a professional mechanic for 40 years. I just recently started giving the ICON stuff some attention. So far it’s been good and i’ve now sold my Snap On tool box and bought an ICON tool box. Probably the only one on RU-vid who bought their ICON tool box, lol. The ratchets have held up well so far. I’m sure it will break eventually, since i’ve had my Snap On ratchet rebuilt a couple of times already as well. But for the money, so far, ICON been a good value. It’s not that I hate Snap On, or love ICON, but SO’s prices have begun to make me look for viable alternatives.

Well said. I do like the quality of Snap On don't get me wrong, but they as well as those other rape trolleys that pull up weekly to shops are just WAY too harsh on the wallet, and I'll never understand why people are so willing to spend so much on them, when there are other viable options out there that won't leave you completely broke, still give you a fairly decent quality tool with the same lifetime warranty that can be swapped out at anytime with no hassle, and not have to wait another week to replace it. But hey to each their own lol.

Thanks for the good info. For what it’s worth here two+ years later I just bought this ICON for $49 with a 10% off coupon (not exactly rare), the non-discounted price is the same as the receipt you showed from ‘21, meanwhile the gearwrench set you mention here being less than $100 is now $129. So if nothing else inflation hasn’t hit HF as bad as some places. (Likewise the 5 drawer cart that you can find all kinds of rave reviews of it being a good value at $259-$299 over the past few years is currently on sale for $199!)

I know tool truck guys always tout the the convenience, but in all honesty if I have to wait a week or longer thats a no go for me. And if I have to meet up with him somewhere its just as inconvenient as going to HF. The only plus for me about the trucks at this point is Made in USA. hopefully Icon will start really expanding the line and Milwaukee too. I've been using both snap on and gearwrench, and after years of use no one should be afraid to spent the little money gearwrenches are and will work just as well as any snap on

I have the same tool BUT not the ICON version tho (I think ?). I do know it's got red and black on the handle (somewhere under all the grease and crud) but Can't confirm ATM. No gift either, had to put forward my $. I have given it HELL and it still has to quit on me. I have forced fasteners that probably would have called for a 1/2" drive tool but I was too lazy to walk back to the tool box. Maybe after 2-3 years of trashing now the rotation selector mechanism it's feeling a bit loose, like it could be knocked out of the selected direction by the lightest of touch. EDIT: I forgot to add that I had to Locktite 2 times the bolt inside the pivoting point. So far, so good. Even if it suddenly quitted on me tomorrow I couldn't possibly get mad, for what I paid (back then) it has already paid for itself with all the abuse I have thrown at it. 👌🙂👍

Frankly, the one thing I don't like about them is that goofy plastic handle that will likely deteriorate when exposed to, idunno, brake cleaner and who knows what else, and will never clean up nice and always look grubby, kinda like that Snap-On ratchet. So I guess even Snap-On has a case of the dumbs about that. I associate those handles with cheap tools because of that, except this one's price is kinda stiff for Harbor Freight. Maybe if they recreate Craftsman's Lifetime Replacement Warranty, but otherwise, eh.

My Icon 1/2 drive sockets are doing ok. I don’t have any of their ratchets though. If had to buy all new now, I would go with Tekton. I have had problems with the Gear-wrench warranties.

@RepairGeek can you do an update in depth talk about how that 2.8L duramax has treated you? I've been thinking about getting the Express van with that engine option and want to know your opinion after a while has passed since you got the Colorado. Chevy is now offering the garbage V6 and a 6.6L V8 guzzler on the vans. I respect your opinion. Keep up the good work!

Literally nothing has changed since I did that video a year ago. That video is still my opinion on it. I Literally put fuel in it, do the basic maintenance and pull down 28-30+ mpg on the highway. If you have problems they will be aftertreatment related. The engines themselves have proven to be solid which it should be considering the basic architecture dates back to the 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD.

Yep. I have the whole set of Pittsburgh Pros and there’s no reason to buy the Icons. They look and feel like the Icons, work great, are much cheaper and you get the same lifetime warranty for a free exchange if they break. They’re the best ratchets in the store for the money.

@@RepairGeek Ronald is right.. ratchets are and never were meant to break things loose or apply final torque.. every single time I've seen a ratchet break it's because someone was misusing it.. I understand the original ICON 3/8's had a faulty design but they fixed it. From what I've seen over the last few years that $50 ratchet is 98% as good as the $200 Snap-On version. Showed him all my emails, didn't receive any. Called the customer support # and was told at first emailed out, voucher at bottom of email on 8-19. Said I never received. Put on hold, then told I should receive sometime b4 end of year!!! Good til August 2022. Told them not acceptable. To which CS Said sorry. Store manager was dumbfounded, wanted to make it right so thankfully he did an in store return/exchange no charge. Hope everyone else has better luck.
