Sounds like a lot of people in the comments don't understand that the target consumer isn't your average person. This is meant for professionals. That's why it's so expensive. If you transfer 100gb+ frequently then it's a great product and the speed makes a significant difference. If you just need an SSD for transferring movies, storing a backup, playing games etc. then this product obviously isn't for you!

I've got a 500GB Samsung T5 and pretty damn happy with it's peformance and price for the more basic things I do. I had actually purchased it to use on the class PCs as part of my I.T. course I did and to help run Virtual Machines from an external drive so that I could take them home as well and an external SSD certainly handled that beautifully!!!

Macbook's internal storage will go away with the Macbook at some point. And using this drive would be the fastest way to move data between PCs and Macs than any other solution. So I think it has a reasonable value of its own.

Excellent review. Wish it was smaller, but size is understandable. WIsh it was less expensive and I'll get one. I've basically purchased Samsungs 970 EVO Plus for $190 and got an enclosure for $50 and it runs very fast over USB3-C. Only problem is it has problems reading at high speed and typically will saturate ports and speeds drop and device cannot be read from any more unless it's unplugged. I using 970 EVO Plus & Enclosure for moving large files ( 150GB to 400GB ) around. Writes are fine, not problems, but have to use regular USB3 to read data off without it coming to stop...

Other user(s) have noticed Final Cut Pro freezing up during the high-bitrate stressful operations because the drive thermal-throttles down. So you're right- better to spend the money on Apple storage when ordering- but most looking at this drive already have their MacBook and need more space , I would think.

Very nice video . What do you think: Is it a good deal to buy a 27 inch iMac with 3.7 GHz 2 TB Fusion drive 580x and use the Samsung x5 as the boot drive (thunderbolt)? The current price is with 2149 EUR for the iMac and 449 EUR for the x5 moderate. But I am worried that the external x5 could by worser (slower, latency?) then a internal SSD or some other issues can happed when Boot the OS . The internal fusion drive I could use as a extra storage (backup?). Thanks.

If you find Thunderbolt external SSDs at price comparable to the affordable SSDs, is it worth purchasing if you do not need the fast speeds (do not conduct video or photo editing or large data tasks) and have computers without thunderbolt? I understand the samsung X4 is not compatible with other port types. only compatible with thunderbolt USB-C. If you need to put the SSD into a computer without thunderbolt, I would be in trouble. wouldn't I?

In US internal SSD upgrade may be the same price however, in Turkey, buying the same model from Apple starts with 20% higher price tag, if you add the upgrades it will be a fortune.. Apple's pricing is ridiculous here.. I wonder if it is possible installing Windows on that drive. It is expected to behave as if it is internal drive..

@BingoBongoMan
@BingoBongoMan 5 лет назад
even if you compared the SSD upgrade to the X5 at an earlier time and X5's price is ~$100 lower now, you forgot to consider that e.g. an upgrade to 500GB gives you only an end 500GB for $400 more. But buying this drive gives you an additional 500GB for it's price. Means you pay at Apple $400 for ~384GB not 500GB!

Wow $515.37 for a 500GB model. If it is a Thunderbolt product, than it is 4x so expensive. on Ebay you can buy a thunderbolt enclosure for fast M.2 Nvme SSD cards price US $188,- excluding SSD, a lot off money but much cheaper tan this Samsung X5. I made self a external USB3.1 Gen2 SSD 480GB 550MB/s for $60,00 fast enough. I made this for back-up purpose. On eBay I buy a enclosure for $16,- here in the Netherlands i buy a 480GB 2.5" SSD $44,50 total price $60,50 I'm very satisfied with it.

Yes! But you are going to get BUTT FUCKED by file management and driver issues. Not to mention it's $400 and the controller may not be well optimized for random read and writes so it'll be slower than a $400 drive should be. Bootcamp or a second laptop is a much better deal.

Plus it's compatible with regular USB computers and ipad Pro. Plus it's A LOT smaller and seems just as rugged. Imagine a year later this 1TB X8 will be half the price as well. :)

Have you tested it with a USB-C cable? I really, really need to know if this drive will connect to a USB computer. Also, the reason the drive is so big, is because it is an M2 drive stuffed into an enclosure. It's the same method those WD external SSDs use (which use SanDisk X400 SSDs, I voided my warranty so you don't have to! It also makes sense since WD now owns the company.). Same method, but a different layout. In the WD, the USB board is essentially stacked on top of the SSD itself, and the SSD being used is single sided, so it can be mounted flush with that board, since both boards are single sided on one side. At least this is how I remember it. Also, feeling the device is absolutely, positively, not an indicator of how hot it is actually getting. If there is no heatsink and no thermal interface material (either paste or pads), a drive may feel nice and cool and low-power to the touch, when in reality it's nearly on fire. If you could use one of the many Mac (or Windows) hard drive SMART diagnostics programs, it will tell you - SSDs run SMART, too. Even some high end flash drives run SMART, because they're also SSDs on a stick! I'd love to know if you're able to get back to us about this. It will be really interesting to see the thermals of this drive. SSDs are nowhere near as sensitive to temperature as hard drives are, and even hard drives aren't as sensitive as people think they are, so it's not critical - but there's no such thing as too much data in a review. It is crucial to know if USB works *at all* though. I know it'll be at a reduced rate, I'm not an idiot, but if it has a chip that can do it, that'd be awesome. Thanks, guys! Like the reviews, keep them coming. Long time website reader, but like the videos too.

There's a problem, most PC motherboard doesn't have thunderbolt 3.
@daylight5085
@daylight5085 5 лет назад
You can easily get a PCIe expansion slot which adds Thunderbolt 3. Thunderbolt 3 is just special because it has direct access to four PCIe lanes directly to the CPU, allowing for better utilization. Secondly, you don't really need this unless you're going between computers. Many new motherboards have at least one M.2 expansion slot, which also supports full 5000 mbps read and writes from M.2 form-factor NVME drives. Many windows laptops even have a free M.2 slot just so you can install your own. www.pccasegear.com/products/38229?PPC=Y&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_s7fBRDrARIsAGEvF8TkoerJq_5Ln3SpuaWgBRHhIhy-69IhwKENh38p6ACHnRCcqHrS6GUaAnAyEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
