I have a home built FreeNAS I built in 2012 still running and it can peg 10G connecton both ways. Using ZFS for the file system 8 Disks and some SSD Caching. Its the SSD Caching that lets me peg it for something so old. Looks like a solid device, nice review - Thanks for it.

With strong wifi how much you can expect from NAS on Macbook Pro instead of connecting with wire?

The OWC thunderbolt 3 10G adapter I am using will get me about 1GB/s but after about 200GB transferred it will overheat and slow down to 100-200MB/s even with a 120mm fan on top of it. Will send it back and try the sonnet if I can get one, seems sold out everywhere.

Which thunderbolt hub has 10 GigE?
@ShinyTechThings

What Synology do you have? I setup a SA3200D (video coming hopefully next month lots of footage to sort through) and from my server I could saturate the 10GbE with a full Gigabyte per second at well over 20GB+. I don't have a 10GbE adapter (yet) for my M1 Mac so I was curious how well this worked. I hacked my DS918+ to 5GbE and it works well until the unsupported driver crashes but a reboot or bounce the driver service to fix it.

thank you for your review! I'm planning to upgrade to 10G as my LaCie Big2, connected trough Thunderbolt 3 on a Macmini M1 only gives me 150/170 MB/s. At the moment I think too buy a Synology 1821+ with its 10G board and connect trough a ZyXel XGS1210-12: can you please share transfer speeds when the connection goes trough a switch? Thank you!

Hi, Which hardrive would you reccommend for imac pro “ lacie 2big dock” or “synology nas”. Main idea is to keep my Lightroom photos and catalogue there and the whole video and audio archive in raid 1. I would probably cut the videos only on imac pro built in ssd and later transfer to hardrive for archiving. Any advise would be appreciated.

You would need a NAS with NVMe SSD read/write caching to get the full throughput for write. 150-200mb/sec is good for HDD's in RAID. Ideally with a Samsung 970 Pro NVME, as they can handle sustained linear writes. Or, an equivalent with SLC/MLC (pricer, but faster & more reliable NAND), just look at the sustained 64k write performance on storagereview SSD benchmarks , and pick the best size/priced model. Some NAS's allow for read/write caches to be separated, so you can use cheaper TLC/QLC for read-only cache and SLC/MLC for write, (or vice versa) to get the best middle ground based on your use case. QLC is not ideal for cache, it's better off for archiving video or games and not changing much over time, as it has a limited amount of writes, and then loses free space incrementally (that's why it's cheap). Perfect for archiving, not so much for editing.

I like the idea of a 10 GB per second network. Is a network that fast beyond the capabilities of home networks? I do a lot of video editing, but have to admit that I don’t know how to increase the speed of my small home network. Currently, I have a MacBook Pro, an iMac 5K, and an older iMac, all connected via an Apple Airport Base Station. In case it matters, I have the Blackmagic egpu Pro. I move videos for editing back and forth between the iMac 5k (Late 2014) and the MacBook Pro via SD cards. Obviously there is room for improvement, but I don’t know how to do it. Are there RU-vid videos about this? I’d much prefer to watch a RU-vid video than read a book about it. Thanks.

you can do this at home without any issue! The only thing you've got to take in mind is that EVERYTHING needs to support that speed, your NAS/Storage space, your switch, your pc, . . . and that takes some planning. It also depends on what exactly you want to do. You go 10Gbps not only for the faster single user speed but also for the big gain in bandwith, lets say that multiple users acces a NAS with storage/footage, the higher the bandwith, the higher the speed EVERY one will get. To give you a general idea.

Theoretically 10G ethernet should get you speeds up to 1.25GB/s. Of course that’s theoretical, and regular gigabit should get you 125MB/s, which it clearly didn’t in your test though the 10G test showed the drives could do it. Even with that in mind, the 10G connection still has a lot of headroom above what you got here.
@FastRedPonyCar
@FastRedPonyCar 5 лет назад
It can do the full 10 gig max speed if the adapter and storage on both ends support that fast of a transfer. I've got this going to my imac and a PC with the ASUS 10g card and the mikrotik 10G switch and everything was plug and play, instant 10 gig with an average transfer speed of 500MB/s all the way up to 1.15GB/s when moving files from one NVMe drive to another.

its bottlenecked by the physical drives maximum performance in raidmode. better results you need rackmount with more intelligent raid controllers or ssd based hard drives both sata an ofc nvme. there also variations in the type of harddrives. professional server hdd´s deliver also faster speeds but are ofc expensive as duck

price ratio is off by allot! not considering the apple tax regular ethernet is at 100mbs at around $30 for the adapter this sonnet adapter runs at 300mbs and cost around $200. it is better to wait until cheaper optionns com out. not saying that someone should wait until it drops to $30 that will never happen but around $130 is a sweet spot

Why does a simple adapter like this be so goddam big?
@2nd-place
@2nd-place 5 лет назад
What is simple about this? There are hardly any external 10G ethernet adapters on the market, and on top of that, it uses Thunderbolt 3.0. There is nothing simple about this. Eventually the adapters will get smaller once 10G ethernet becomes more common and economies of scale and component advances bring down the price and size. I'm curious if it's possible to make a smaller USB-C version since that supports 10Gbps, which should be fast enough in theory, but USB doesn't often reach the theoretical peak speed, so maybe that's why. USB 4 will support 40Gbps and is essentially Thunderbolt, so maybe by then components will be smaller and simpler in a couple years.

why would an Apple user even need that much speed?

why 10g? Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40g isn't it?
@MichaelSmith-fg8xh
@MichaelSmith-fg8xh 4 года назад
Fanmelly 40g Ethernet is freely available but this would make the adapter $US1k and almost no one has a 40gb port on their switch at home (although I’m druling over a MikroTik switch including 2x 40gb ports)

Not worth the price. Cheaper to use fiber instead. I'd rather upgrade the hardware than the wires each time (as they run through the walls). Cat5-6-7-8 and so on.
@9to5Mac
@9to5Mac 5 лет назад
Right, but that's not going to be a realistic option for everyone. I think there's definitely a market for devices like this. I love the plug and play, portable nature of it. Obviously I'd love to have a permanent install in walls, though. That's the dream.
