Great points, Pete. In my opinion, this is the Stones most underrated album! The variety on this album fully encapsulates everything that was going on with Pop/Rock in '73. Mick Taylor was the Stones finest guitarist.
Mick Taylor is by far the greatest musician in the RS history and one of the greatest guitar players worldwide. Without him everything would be different.
But Keef is ranked higher as a guitar player. What instrument do you refer to? And Brian Jones was a master of every instrument featured on a Stones album.
@@FuturePast2019 I love Keith, don't misunterstood me, but do you really believe that Keef is a better guitar player than Mick, or a better musician in general? Yes, Keith is ranked higher...on magazines. Because he is one of the Stones leaders. But in reality? Mick is on another level. Brian Jones was really good as well and this is something that people forget. Some people don't even know who Brian was...pathetic.
@@ledzep9501 Ok, but also "Without him everything would be different." Taylor's favorite Stones album? B Banquet. Let it Bleed? All Keith. Without Taylor? They do miss him LIVE. Taylor was fantastic live. Ladies and Gentlemen (live 72). Or Brussels (live 73). Can't be beat. But the setlist can.
Thanks for the review, Pete. Ever thought of doing a general vid on the subject of box sets, re-re-re-re-issues/masters/mixes, non essential bonus tracks and such? It sometimes feels like the record companies are intent on milking us dry.
The expensive package is the one that has a lot of info about the recording and everything that was happening around at the time. The Brussels Affair concert is the best thing I’ve ever heard live. No band has ever been that on fire for a gig.
Lots of Atlantic's records from the Stax/Volt era to the early 70s were mudfests with loud tape hiss. Once remasters of their artist rosters were getting reissued, most people forgot how bad the originals really were.
Love this album! It's hard to live up to the 4 albums that came before it but there are some killer tracks on this! Most notably 100 Years Ago which is a top 5 Stones song IMO!! I'm debating about getting this reissue with the "Goat cover" on clear vinyl.
Don’t have this remix/ but the original GOATS HEAD ranks like 4 th or 5 th in my RS discography. Still play it on / and off over the last 47+ yrs. great review PETE. Thank you
Pete - Thanks for the review of this new issue of this CD/album. Though I am trying to save my CD budget for all the new bands and new 'old' music that SoT brings to my attention, might have to get this for the Stones collection. Really appreciate the discussion of the track list on CD 2 for those of us familiar with the album. Still trying to catch up on all your SoT shows from being away for a few days last week. Not sure how you find time to make all this content but those of us out here love it. As always, keep up the great work. Thanks again!
Omg ! Martin popoff back on tomorrow! The Hudson valley squares on Monday and guitar hack coming on the show ! Love him! All of Pete’s best guests are coming up - gonna be an awesome week ! Can’t wait to see the return of Butch Jones ! Pete’s show has been on fire lately ! By far the best channel on You tube - so glad I finally found it !
i bought some of the songs on iTunes from the brussels affair gig, the brussels affairs concert is probably one of the best concerts released on cd, the gimme shelter version is amazing
That is bloody outrageous that they’ve gone in for this kind of revisionism with regards Mick Taylor. It’s as if none of them can accept the simple truth that their best albums were made with him in the group. That is really poor show.
Patrick Crowther ? What revisionism? He’s played with them a lot on recent tours as a guest. There is a photo of him in the GHS reissue -if that’s what you are talking about. He’s played with Keith on some solo stuff, he’s played with Ronnie on solo stuff. He was inducted in the hall of fame with them. What else does he need for being in a band for 5 1/2 years out of the bands 57 year career? Very important member and great guitarist during my favorite period of the Stones but he is not overlooked at all
flyingburritobro68 I don’t think a few appearances on stage with them really redress what he’s owed enough. One photo of him in the booklet (which is insulting, given his huge contribution to that album). Also the band were apparently very mean with him after he left the band and didn’t really give him any financial help when he was living in pretty dire conditions. With all their millions it would have been good of them to recognise his contribution in some way financially. Maybe they have in recent years, but I remember reading a piece on Mick Taylor years ago which pointed out quite clearly that he was living a life a million miles away from that of a glamorous rock star. I think the problem is that it would be quite insulting to Ronnie Wood if they were honest and admitted in public that Mick Taylor was the best musician ever to play with the band and helped shape all their greatest music in the ‘album’ era (post Brian Jones).
Patrick Crowther Your opinion cool. I love his work in the Stones and those are my favorite albums currently. It changes as I’ve been a fan of theirs for coming coming close to 50 years. For some reason Taylor and Jones fans think those two are shortchanged. Taylor quit in the midst of heroin addiction at the time. Jones was fired and bought out. The band carried on both times. What else can they do for him. BTW the Sticky Fingers reissue has an additional 7 photos of Taylor vs the initial release 😎
Oh yeah!!! The Impossible Dream tops my list. But I have everything they ever did and love every album. A top five all time favorite band for me. Vambo rules
So pumped to add this one to the Stones collection regardless of all the previous releases... love this album to death. Plus the Page track is nice #PetePardoArmy #PetePardoNation #BigMeatPete #SplashYourSeaOfTranquilityAllOverMyFace #Keef
Totally agree about the book. Pretty skimpy package. But good second disc (doesn't match up to Some Girls or Exile bonus discs), but still good. Great remaster. Love 100 years ago. Fantastic album. Good video. Thanks!
Thanks for that review! I totally agree with everything you said about the album. Lots of great music. I agree that this period of the Stones music is filled with great music, I think all the albums from Ya-Ya's to It's Only Rock'n'roll are classics. I'll have to get this reissue!
Hi, I'm from New Zealand, I have the original vinyl version of Goat's Head Soup, Including the unappetizing, but cool Goat's Head Soup pullout, I've thought do I still enjoy it, and quite frankly I think Pete is right on the money, Coming Down Again is my favorite Album track. I think mine is a US version.
The reason he left, was because of their intense lifestyle and he didn't feel good about it, because of his family. I'm pretty sure because of his time with the Stones he became a Heroin addict. That's the stuff why he left.
Had this on LP but didn't like it back then in the 80s except for Angie and Heartbreaker. However I may want to revisit it. My taste had matured. Plus I'd love to hear those Brussel shows.
As a long time Stones I rank Goats Head Soup among their best work. I also think that you made a valid point about there being a certain 'musicality' to the music speaking of musicality It's a shame that the booklet doesn't illustrate Mick Taylor's presence at the sessions more or at all (he also was invisible on song writing credits all too often..hmmm . I have heard that they didn't invite him to the big exhibition they had a few years ago (he wasn't too happy about that) and on the subject of Taylor it was during this period that he became disenchanted, unhappy and creatively stifled with being a Rolling Stone and quit a few years later (and for the music released after - the law of diminishing returns and although I liked a few things here and there nothing compares to the Taylor (or Jones) years at all. I like the mixture of styles and moods on this album- Dancing with Mr. D is a decadent and spooky opener. Angie is just a great song and one of their best ballads. Coming Down Again sounds heartfelt and mournful, Winter just weaves beautified but jaded soundscape that is unique and one of two songs that Keith actually sings well (You Got the Silver being the other). Can You Hear the Music although continually underrated is one of the true gems of this collection and recalls a Brian Jones in Joujoka /magical feel... the last song Star** just brilliant and the cherry on top and perhaps a gesture or counter point statement simular to the dreamy Moonlight Mile put at the end of Sticky Fingers? Also I have to say I wasn't really impressed with the Scarlet song in general and perhaps I expected something fantastic because of Page's brilliant musicianship and aura. JMO.
Thanks for the review! The very first time I bought this album I absolutely hated it. I wondered why did they make this kind of record after the good time rockin' Exile On Main Street. But now I think this album represents the Rolling Stones at their most mature. Overall it's quite mellow with lots of funk/groove style coupled with soul ballads and boogie/blues kind of stuff. But as Pete says musicality is incredible. Songs like 100 Years Ago, Silver Train, Hide your Love, Winter and Star Star will always be in my top 20! The live disc Brussels Affair also for me is the proof that the Stones are one of the the top live blues-rock acts of the early 70's along with Allman Brothers Band, Humble Pie, Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac and Rory Gallagher.
Love GHS as it was the first Stones album ever brought into our household. 8track tape actually and bought for my older sister. I thought the cover was really cool because it was so wrong, dark and freaky. Perfect for the times and the band.
Have to say I love the remix. Giles Martin did a fantastic job. For me the original mix always sounded dull, which took away the polish of the songs. Not only that, some of Mick Taylor’s best work too. Love the sound of the 12 string guitar on Angie. It just jumps out at you in the remix!
I Never Understood the Criticism Of " Goats Head ". Its one of My favorite Stones Albums. It was my Favorite for Many Years. 100 Yrs Ago is Amazing...Love This Album. The packaging could have Been Better on this Release. Under-Appreciated Record.
When this was released, fans were very disappointed. Everyone thought it sucked, but then how does anyone follow up Exile? Looking back today, this is a pretty fine damn album!
My favourite Stones album, as weird as that may be. I own the 1994 Virgin Remaster and the one from the 14-disc Remasters boxed set of their 1971-2005 albums (which I luckily got for crazy cheap.) Don't know about all of the reissues, but the one thing that bothers me (and not many people seem to talk about this) is that the '94 Virgin remaster is the only one, to my knowledge, to feature Star Star in its full explicit glory. In other reissues, there was some silly effect used to try and hide certain lyrics in parts of the song ("I bet you keep your p***y clean", and another featuring a reference to actor John Wayne.) Not ready to buy this, at least not right now, but I do wonder if this 2020 remix gives us Star Star the way it was meant to be heard (barring the fact that it's remixed.)
This album sure has seen a rise in its esteem in the last few years. Like, literally its been a few years that the vocal acclaim has climbed. It isnt GHS that it followed the undeniable greatness of the previous 3 (4?) albums and its a fine record! Winter has long been my go-to "cult" great Stones song. Nicky Hopkins is so fluid on this album. And - let me say, despite the polarizing aspect Angie has had over the years its my absolute favorite Stones song. THAT is saying something! So much love for Coming Down Again and its ok. Better than Can you hear the music..
Ανδρέας Καποδίστριας I know but I was saying blow by blow in the sense that I’m a bigger fan of that album but I see where you thought I made a mistake...
Nice t-shirt Pete. I remember when GHS came out. It was not popular with the critics. It had a "different sound" to it. It doesn't have the same "sonic blast" as Exile or Fingers. I love Silver Train. But play it next to All Down The Line. Now before I get eggs and bottles thrown at me, let me say GHS has some classic songs on it. 100 Years, Keef's Coming Down, Star F**ker, etc. Maybe the Jamaican smoke had a effect on things? :) p.s. looking forward to Black & Blue reissue.
Was considered a come down after the heights of Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street but while the songs overall are not as strong there are classics her with “Angie” and “Heartbreaker” and what might be Keith’s best “Coming Down Again”...
I love this album and the additional songs of Criss Cross and Scarlet. Dig the music to All the Rage, but not some much Jagger's snooty vocal approach....The original mix is so ingrained in me that I'm not sure if I like the new mix enough to replace the original for a listening experience.
Couldnt agree more about Mick Taylor ..pity they never seem to treat him well.As for the lp the bonus stuff would be my only reason to buy it,I personally wish there was more full band material oh well. Great vid as usual Pete.
I had this delivered about a month ago . I've always liked this album , I have my pristine LP in a safe place . Nice digital remix it sounds great . The bonus cd is pretty cool , some nice music on there . Shame about the booklet with that tiny writing .
Goats head is great with Dancing with Mr D,Angie, and the underrated Silver Train...but after listening to it’s only rock n roll again,I’m definitely switching my allegiance...
I actually prefer goat's head over exile these days. Played exile to death in my 20's, and got goat's head about five years later. remember throwing on exile in my mid 30's after not playing it for a few years and it just didn"t quite do it for me like it use to, while goat's head grew on me in my 40's and I love it. I would put it = 3rd with sticky fingers these days with let it bleed/beggars banquet = 1st
If they had a 3 CD set I'd buy it, cuz it's a great album. But I'm not getting the super deluxe just for the live album. They've done that with all of these rerelease, which is why I don't own any...yet.
Not a big fan of this remix, Giles Martin cleaned the vocal bits, but that dirt was part of the fascination. I mean it's a quite dark record..."dancing with mr D", "coming down again", "Heartbreaker"....faboulous album, the remix to me KILLED "Star star", the vocals are too loud in comparison to the instruments
Unless there are serious problems with the original mix, I'm not a big fan of remixes. Especially if the intent is to make a classic album to sound more "modern". It would be like painting over a Picasso artwork to give it more detail and pop, or rewriting "Moby Dick" to incorporate modern language and phrasing.
@@rookmaster7502 Oh you mean those 1990s remixes? I agree, overall they suck. Some labels made only those mixes available at the time. The first "Best Of Free" CD by Island, the Aerosmith "Sweet Emotion" remix that a local rock station beat to death, or Warner Bros with ZZ Top's entire catalogue. Big drums, compression out the wazoo, and too many bad effects on everything else at once.
@@djhrecordhound4391 I mean remixes in general. If the original artist wants to do a special Dance Remix version (such as Bowie did a few times), then fine. But otherwise, the remix is only some engineer's interpretation of what he/she thinks the mix should sound like. I prefer to listen to the original mix - warts and all. Besides, I find that many of the recent remixes I've listened to have way to much exaggerated high end, resulting in harsh sibilance in the vocals and overpowering hi-hats.
The original already was a masterpiece, really underrated, all tracks was at least very good. Doo Doo Doo Heartbreaker, Star Star, Winter, many songs that could have been bigger. I like all new songs, but my favorite by far is All The Rage, that guitar riffs are just awesome, great singing by Mick, everything is on point. About the album cover, for sure it's not great, kinda bizarre. I have the original and I will be going after that new realease too, specally for the outtakes.
What would your Top 100 look like? Just to understand why exactly the RS list made you laugh. I just went though the new RS Top 100 and one thing that absolutely disqualifies it is the inclusion of compilations. There are some questionable choices as well, otherwise it is not that bad.
Sad about Mick Taylor being marginalized by the choice of photos. From the looks of the pages you showed us, it appears Bill Wyman is being erased from history as well.
I'm not big on those remixed albums stuff. it's almost as if there's something missing from the original mix. it's hard to explain. the feel of it is not the same.
