Almost a year before making this video, I installed the Eco-Plug drain plug insert. Here's an update on how it's held up since, and how it performs during its first oil change.

Jiffy lube striped my bolt. Mechanic stating I needed a new oil pan but since they had to lift my transmission to remove my oil pan it’s going to cost over $1000. So RU-vid made me buy this fix and it worked amazingly I’m very happy with the product.

Woah, that engine is really covered in oil! Loiking forward for the fix! And, honestly, I think is a good temporary solution or, if you have an old car, can save you lots of bucks because these oil sump are pretty expensive. But, as a permanent solution, I wouldn't trust it and probably buy a good second hand sump.

I don't understand. I really don't. Your videos are very well edited, well lit and filmed, and your explanations are clear and thorough. On this topic of replacing a stripped pan and using an eco plug, your original video and this follow-up is the best that exists (hope to see another follow-up for today!) Exactly the kind of channel I would want to make someday. But your views are so low compared to many others not nearly as well shot or explained... Not even comparable to Scotty's couple loud minutes on this topic. I may do this too, for my old BMW (once I can figure out how to extract the bolt without too much damage) based especially on the reliability you've proven here. I'm doing a more dumb thing currently in just sealing the washer with silicone until I can extract it at next oil change. But I calculated the strength of the few threads it is connected to, and the resistance of them is 1000psi at worst, while the psi against the bolt can never be more than 50psi or so. Which is a ridiculous safety factor. Only worry is vibration and leakage around the threads, which the silicone will take care of (may even reinforce with clear rubber sealant) Anyway... Thanks for your vids. I'll probably follow them in 10,000km. Only concern I have is the plug on my x3 points directly down.

Thanks. I need to shout more. Pointing down is not great unless there's a large recess. You might have to find something lower profile.

I just installed one of these in a Honda Odessey. The threads stripped and I managed to drill and tap for Heli-Coil but I couldn't get the coil started. After many frustrating hours trying I bailed and went with an eco-plug. The one I bought came with a coating of a green sealing material. It is not sealing well and leaves little oil stains on my driveway. I am going to try the Permatex idea before going the oil pan replacement route. Lesson learned for anyone reading this is go with Permatex instead of what comes on the eco plug.

@@williamlegg2922 it is working better now. It doesn't leave stains on the driveway but still leaks a little bit. I never did switch to permatek since the seal is good enough.

@@larrydeem3071 I installed it today, the plug leaks with the original green sealant; So took it out and applied the permatex, the plug didn't leak at first, so I waited 4 hours for the fixture time then added oil, seems the plug leaks now. haven't drive the truck yet, will see what happens tomorrow.

Is the oil hot or cold? Hot oil drains faster than cold oil does.

1. Are there folks who have experience with more than one of the three different typs of sealers over time, the Epoxy provided, the sealer Craig used, or the newer Green stuff? 2. Any word on the most most years/miles the tapered thread design has held up for sombody? Just curious, and your videos are really well done and informative, Thank you!
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY Год назад
The sealant I used is going to be fine for many years, it's used by spec on tapered threads like the gearbox drain plug for example which may never be touched in the life of many cars. Similarly the epoxy etc. If the thread is not disturbed it is unlikely to leak once properly installed. The most likely part to start leaking on this Ecoplug would be the rubber seal at the magnetic cover, as it ages.
@jamilhope9045
@jamilhope9045 Год назад
@@CraigsDIY that’s cool to hear. im fine the rubber getting aged, I can just get a new Eco plug and take the new Magnet cap right?

After many miles or years of "Ease of Use" what's another $10 bucks for a new seal and magnetic plug insert, even if you dont need the actual drain plug? It's lifetime warranty so maybe they will send you a new thin rubber gasket for the magnetic plug insert?

I have a question. So my oil drain pan bolt is stripped. When I try to get it off, it just spins forever and ever. I understand that part. But I want to try and get it off. I been watching videos and looking at reviews and it seems like my only option left is to drill and tap it??? I don't quite understand what I have to do... Could you please give me some instruction on how to do it and what will I need? Thank you.
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 4 года назад
You will have to drill and tap it to fix it properly, or use something like in this video, but first you need to get out the old one. It will come out but obviously you don't have sufficient threads left. Try to get a blade under the head of the bolt, and gently lever it outward, while you turn it CCW. If you can't get a blade in, try a decent pair of vice grips on the bolt head, pull and turn at the same time.
@davidgutierrez8297
@davidgutierrez8297 4 года назад
If it really does spin indefinitely without coming out just get a large pair of vice grips, and I mean a LARGE pair and pull the sucker out.
@QurenTheShield
@QurenTheShield 4 года назад
@@davidgutierrez8297 That's all? I did feel like I was making it harder than it was. So, after that. How should I go about sealing it back up so it won't leak?
@davidgutierrez8297
@davidgutierrez8297 4 года назад
@@QurenTheShield all I'm saying is from what you described there shouldn't be any complete threads left to hold the bolt it. A larger pair would give you more leverage and force, and should allow you to pull it out. That's how I did it on my Honda civic's 14mm oil pan plug after Walmart oil change denied they broke it. It just so happens that a stripped 14mm plug is just the perfect size to tap a 15mm thread into. All I had to do was source a 15mm oil pan bolt which can't be bought in any autoparts store I've seen, but is readily available online such as on Amazon. Bought a pack of 6 for $12.
@davidgutierrez8297
@davidgutierrez8297 4 года назад
@@QurenTheShield also I know somebody that tried to drill it out, but the drill bit kept biting into the drain plug and just started spinning it. This actually loosened it and caused it to spin out.

Installed it today, the threads leaks, then I took it out and used permatex thread sealant. left the plug for 4 hours for the permatex to work before I add the new engine oil in, then it seems it still leaks. Haven't drove the truck yet, not sure how much it will leak under pressure. Any idea how to fix this?
@CraigsDIY

You'll have to take it out, redo. Make sure clean & dry everything before applying sealant. Follow instructions re set time.

Usually I don't install these. I retap or replace the pan. I had a customer that was on hard times and asked if I could install this just because they couldn't afford the other methods. I did 2 years ago and it still holds to date. No leaks or issues. I just serviced the van last week. I'm not sure if it's good or bad but the 1 that I installed has held way past my expectations.
