It’s been my understanding that angled dowel joints are “traditionally” done using a drill press with a tilting table. It takes a pretty big drill press to do substantial-sized work like this. The abundant widespread availability of Kreg-style pocket hole jigs really opens up this fantastic technique to the masses. I think my great-grandpa “invented” this sort of jig, along with thousands of other similarly-skilled craftsmen, making them themselves in response to the needs of the day. The great work of Mr. Kreg was in really pinning down the essence of the idea, mass-producing it, and setting it loose on the world. I for one am really glad he did. Pocket screws are plenty strong enough for thousands of applications, and the same essential idea can be expanded upon in various ways and applied to more demanding conditions - as you’ve done, here. It’s quite an accomplishment.

Thank you for this video and follow-up! I am building a 4ft x 18in x 19in chest for my parents 54th anniversary. All the wood is milled from an oak and poplar I fell in May. It is now November (in the South). I am excited about this project but did not want to use screws to join the front, sides and back and base. Thank you many times over for showing the proof of concept and application. The boards I am using are processed to 1.25inch thick by 5.5 to 6.5 inches wide. The dowel method will serve this peice well!

This is a perfect example of both what I love and hate about RU-vid! Your original video was great, and then to see the CONSTRUCTIVE members of the YT community building upon the first video to develop a really great technique is priceless! Then, as always, there’s the DESTRUCTIVE members, the trolls. I just finished building a coffin wedding arbor (don’t ask!) for a friend and used dowels in the angled joints, but it never crossed my mind to use the Kreg jig! Using 2 - 1/2” dowels and 2 - 2 1/4” pocket screws, the thing is bulletproof! I got tired of sanding dowels by hand and started chucking them up in the lathe and spin sanding them! Thanks for a great contribution that we can all use! Oh, loved the Crocs n Sox!

Im LAUGHING SO HARD AT THE trolls. I remember that video .. I thought the moment I saw it that it was an awesome Idea.. Pocket hole has been around.. In a marketing concept it was released to the public en masse about twenty years ago. I too have seen these on old furniture.. It's its nothing new. Mr Kreg whom is from the same town as myself was passionate about getting America building again and it worked. It made it possible for everyone to do joinery and BUILD BUILD BUILD!! Now in shop notes and woodsmith magazine they made pocket holes jigs with routers.. My challenge to you is too make one of those jigs and continue using your current pocket hole jig as a dowel jig.. Great Video.. I'm 57 woodworking since age 12 and honestly was blown away when you made that video.. THANK YOU for thinking outside of the box!! by the way what about the mini kreg.. try doweling with that you will be amazed

@@MakerBeach One thing I forgot to mention yesterday. If you are interested in some serious skill building with dowels. Start planning an investment into a product called the Dowel Max Buy it from the company itself. There are many knock offs out there. The dowel max system is by far superior to anything on the market. Now with that being said the initial jig cost 235.00 which could be considered pricey for some. I will say this if you are a DIY person working on your house you will migrate into wanting your space to work for you which means built ins and closets. The dowel max will do it for you. I am a strong proponent of using items that are accessible to everyone. Many RU-vidrs have changed into salesmen for super duper high end tools that you don’t need .. FESTOOL domino and CNC comes to mind in that thought. Many people are becoming aware of this and are turned off by the blatant advertising built into how to videos. I’m confident that if you stick to using accessible equipment for the masses your channel will continue to grow.

Great video again,, yea I agree with you theflat pack furniture..there's nothing like good solid carpentry..I remember about 30+ years ago, my brother in law made a kitchen cabinet for us,, that was one solid piece hanging on the wall..many many years later I renovated the house and that cabinet had to go. I used it in a shed for storage and it never came apart, yet the new one I put in, had doors hanging down and hinges coming loose.. can't beat the old solid carpentry.thanks for sharing 👍👍🇮🇪

Mr. MB, Your method might also be helpful when assembling items from IKEA. Whenever I do it, I make sure I have an assortment of metal corner brackets. Really interesting concept. I have never used pocket holes on anything other than plywood, because there are better methods of joinery for a stronger joint, um you know like dowels. Ha! I think Kreg may have seen your videos because they have a new jig out that is specifically designed for 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 pieces of wood. It uses beefier screws and should hold up just like your method. I may have to buy one to check it out because I want to build a nice heavy duty long shelving unit for all my stuff in my garage. Keep up the ingenuity and great work! BTW if you want a great Doweling Jig the Dowel Max is really well built and extremely accurate. It is not cheap, but you will be able to pass it down to your kids and/or grand kids.

Regarding the last viewer comment, I'm with you. But while it is true that most furniture does not fully disassemble easily, I think they're talking about how leg/apron assemblies often break down for flat storage and transport. This is not always the case, and regular dowel joints, regular mortise and tenon, floating tenon, etc., are permanent joints in this application, and are not only popular but traditional. That person's experience may be based on RTA furniture from a big box store (and collapsible can certainly be handy over trying to 'thread' a big piece through tight turns and openings), but it's definitely not 'the rule'. BTW, loved your reaction to it -- you really 'sold' the line.... :) And anyway, I mostly responded here to help you out with the YT algo. Good channel and project. Keep it up!
@MakerBeach
@MakerBeach 3 года назад
Thanks Bill! Yeah I had similar thoughts on that comment and totally agree with you that a lot of people are used to flat box furniture. But that's not the case with fine furniture. I'm not saying what I make is fine furniture (far from it) but I do prefer permanent joinery over nuts and bolts. Thanks watching, commenting and for the help with the algo! Super appreciated!

I'm gonna pick up on the comment regarding maintenance. Firstly, it you are talking about maintaining wood, I hope you use something like Murphy's Wood Oil. This prevents cracking and keeps the wood nice and conditioned. (Not crazy about painted wood pieces to be honest.) Second, there is this thing called a jigsaw, and this other thing called a drill bit. In the worst case, you could use a jigsaw or something similar to cut apart the pieces. Now likely, using the same pocket jig and the drill bit you used to make the holes, you could just drill out the dowels if needed. That's all!

I was about to buy the Kreg jig XL because that seems to be the right model for attaching 2x4 on 4x4 with the bigger 1/2" drill bit. Now that I saw this video I am doubting again. Better buy the R3 or the replacement model 320 with the 3/8" drill bit? Since this model is more flexible and also usable for thinner / wider range of wood?

Dowel joinery is something so intruiging to me. It's surprisingly strong yet very simple. If the aesthetics of hiding the dowels is of no concern to the user, then it can be as simple as clamping two piece of wood together, drill, and then pin. No need for precision except for maybe keeping it consistently spaced. If used in tandem with pocket screws, then the utility of the system improves immensely because now one jig does both and can partially eliminate the need for huge clamps for some glue ups.
@oldporkchops
@oldporkchops Год назад
I'm not a master woodworker, but if you add up the girth of the dowels plus the two top and bottom pocket hole screws, I would venture to guess that they are close to a tenon's girth. Just saying. This method is fast, inexpensive, and simple. Case closed.

Great video, I’ve never used dowels or mortise and tenons going into blind holes in the legs as in your table build, I prefers to make a feature of the joint in a different colour of wood, and so just drill /cut them straight into both pieces but isn’t DIY Woodwork about using what tools and Knowledge you have to get the best result that you can ? … and these types of video give you more knowledge ….!!.. and a different perspective..💪🏻

I cannot for the life of me understand why you would substitute a dowel with glue in place of a pocket hole screw. The screw provides a far stronger joint than the dowel. and is a much quicker assembly than using dowels with glue. Your hypothesis on the strength of the joint is flawed. Especially when you choose to agree with using a pocket screw as the third joiner vs a dowel tio strengthen the butt joint.
@MakerBeach
@MakerBeach 3 года назад
I used the third pocket screw to only hold the joint together while creating the dowel joint. I think pocket screws are great in a lot of situations but I don't think they are a good choice where a lot of torqueing forces can happen like on a large table. Thanks for watching and commenting!

wood to wood with good glue is always the best way! Screws just do not do what wood will when glued. Also, the expansion, etc in wood now works together...:) However, the combination idea was very good and supplied extra strength.

Fantastic engineering, it just simply makes sense. I have just recently moved, and my workshop is still evolving, so I’m making my benches with Kregg screws, because IT DOES let me take the bench down and re invent it. This is the most suitable method, for now. When I am doing permanent joins, I will absolutely use this method. This also gets rid of the problem when two screws collide using Kregg screws, as the opposite “Side” would simply glide through the “Opposing “ dowel. Thank you for the education.

I really like expanding my knowledge despite what trolls will distract you with. I was researching dowel jigs for a project and thought about upgrading my dowel jig kit that I bought some 40 years ago! I still have it but the original project was a coffee table built with limited funds and is still in use however I am building a wall for my RV lavatory to enclose an area for a hanging closet and a bank of deep drawers and was pointed towards the Dowelmax as I can use it in tight spaces etc. However, your suggestion of the Kreg pocket hole screw jig is a great option. I use the Kreg HD jig for larger projects. It uses a 1/2" hole vs. the standard Kreg pocket hole of 3/8". Two 1/2" hardwood dowels on the outer edges and a HD pocket screw between them to clamp and provide additional strength, makes the joint nearly indestructible.

This technique would be great for certain instances where you can't separate the two rails in order to get a regular straight-on dowel in. Slot your apron in and dowel-er right up. I like it!
