Today I was able to visit my friend Dana Allan in Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada and check out his incredible Corydoras breeding fishroom all under his basement staircase.
For such a small space Dana has does amazing and magical things in breeding corydoras.
It's been almost three years since my last visit and wow has Dana been busy.
So join me as Dana gives us a full rundown on what he has been up to in his continued journey working with these incredible fish.
Dana will share some his tips and tricks in triggering some very challenging Corydoras to breed in captivity.
Thanks for watching,
Biggs

From my experience, during water change, dropping the water temperature by a degree or two triggers cory to breed. It is a signaal for them of a rain season ergo, plenty of food.

Yeah, just turn the heater off over night, will be eggs in the morning every time. People freak out about turning heaters off in community tanks but it really isn't an issue.

So great to see this follow-up video :) ...and great to see a fellow Canuck being successful with Cory breeding! Re stressing them to breed, can attest to: I almost always get spawns right after I get my Corydoras from Curtis @ Commonsenseaquatics - great fish! (Calgary!). He has hard water, higher pH, I have super soft water (low GH) that always acidifies quickly. Just plop and drop into net, then into new tank. The combination of the flight to Vancouver and the big water parameter shift seems to do it :).
@themadaquarist
@themadaquarist Год назад
He supplies incredible fish! But yes the acidification of the water is definitely a natural trigger

I have wild atropersonatus over half a year very shy. And also sodalis wildcaught for 2 weeks now and these are shy to. Some tips and tricks about these 2? For breeding and getting less shy? Great videos man.
@themadaquarist
@themadaquarist 9 месяцев назад
Getting less shy is a complex task. Adds no small peaceful characins above them may very well do the trick. Looking into their specific range and habitat may very well shed some clues. Perhaps the addition of leaf litter? Water chemistry play a factor in their native range? Depending on their range they may very well need a trigger or two to induce spawning. Cold water change, oxygen drop, increase in organic matter, still water, increase temperature for a couple week then water change. All factors that mimic their natural habitat. Putting the pieces of the puzzle together to achieve success is what makes it all so rewarding.

I'm a rookie when it comes to this sort of thing however, in my main display tank (now an EBA breeding tank) my Cory's have spawned successfully 1x and I get eggs every week on a water change. I've been told that adding cooler water to the tank triggers the spawn as "rainy season" Maybe there's something there? Good video. Awesome fish
@themadaquarist

Yes all South American species can be triggered by a myriad of methods. The cold water change being one of them

Lineage 8 is interesting and Lineage 1. From my understanding they are a little bit more tricky personality wise then others but for 8 depends on the group, best in harems. One day I might keep Corydoras properly, I just don't have the setups realistically right now. I like the elongated heads of some of the lineages. Nice to see some C. spirulus around, an importer sent a whole box worth of those one and they are a difficult sell. I also think it's great stressors mentioned as a reason fishes breed.
@fnhuggybear
@fnhuggybear 5 месяцев назад
Is a lineage 8 fish one that has been captive bred for 8 generations?
@FreshwaterIchthyology
@FreshwaterIchthyology 5 месяцев назад
@@fnhuggybear no lineages refers to the phylogeny (family tree) so on a certain branch. Quite a few are rarely if ever bred in captivity from that branch.

What does makes a breeder MASTER? The amount of species successfully bred or the years of experience?
@themadaquarist
@themadaquarist 4 месяца назад
IMO anyone with a level of passion to spend time doing what they love to get species to reproduce successfully in captivity is a master. It’s a term used in aquarium society’s breeders award programs which is where it came from in this context

Never give up! Try increasing the temp a couple degrees, feeding rich foods like bloodworms etc….. then in a week or two if there’s a rain storm do a 30-50% cold water change you may be pleasantly surprised. Our role in fish breeding is figuring out the puzzle. Good luck
