Andrew cares and does good work; especially for such a young man. Look at him after 20 years more experience and learning! He's busy working hard and sounds a little tired. Don't take all those anonymous "experts" negative comments too seriously, most of us readers don't. An active living contracting: receiving the customer's first inquiry, driving out/inspection/assessment/estimate, ordering the supplies, coordinating with people, equipment to the site, planning ahead, doing it properly step by step safely, checking progress and quality, setting up the tripod camera, finishing up, flying the drone camera, getting paid, back to base, equipment maintenance, accounts, editing and posting these great videos (thanks Andrew), buying new equipment, dealing with RU-vid? Keep up the good work. Tally ho!

Retired now and gives me great pleasure watching a new guy with the energy that Andrew shows working and enjoying his day. He's learning every day and not afraid to admit when he makes a mistake. Totally awesome you got to come back and do a follow up vid, on a job that had so many haters. I remember so many people complaining about, -“No expansion joint against the garage slab” and “No control joints” and “Blah blah blah”. You don’t need any of that for a garage apron like this! If naturally occurring cracks DO show up, they will actually read lower on a flatness meter than saw cut control joints bcz naturally occurring cracks almost never tend to heave on one side or the other of the crack. Another job well done Andrew! And most importantly, a callback from a satisfied customer.

That home owner looked like he was interested in they drone as well. At first I was worried about privacy but times have changed and we must adapt to the new ways or sink in sorrow for ourselves. Loved the broom finish, I got a similar effect by using the garden hose with a sprayer and it left dimples so that you don't fall but it also cleans itself. I see the puppy being trained by Lievi... he is getting up in years so when you lose him, don't be afraid to cry. I still get a mist in my eyes thinking about my two dogs of twelve and a half years and they were large dogs... well people dogs. I always had time for them and as the time came close my heart filled with dread.. enough on that. I have to say with all honesty, you are one of the very best at what you do. From reading the comments on the original slab video, the fact its a rough broom finish is not the issue with the finish. Its the fact your finish has what looks like 1/4-1/2 inch ridges where your broom strokes overlapped. To be more specific, your mix was still too wet for the style of broom you used. It is possible to get a rough boomed finish, where it so consistent you cant tell where the broom overlaps are except if the slab has a curved edge. If you havn't already, I would suggest buying a proper concrete broom for future pours, the are usually 36 or 48 inches wide and only an inch or so deep row of 2-3 inch long bristles. All that said your more recent concrete videos have been better quality then this one was, which if the customer doesn't want to pay for the concrete required for a proper slab then I guess long term they get what they pay for. They apparently didn't learn that the first time from that 1-2 inch thick asphalt driveway....

Just about any slab will withstand a single season. The key is what it looks like over time, say 5 years. Why? Because spalling takes time. The problem is that micro-cracks become larger. They in turn allow more and more water under the surface which in turn freezes. This is a process, not an event. Troweling (bringing up the butter) seals the surface against spalling. The broom finish is added after finish-troweling not instead of. I should add that spalling is when the surface flakes off. The danger in laying down only 2 inches of concrete, as it appeared in your previous video, and not using rebar, is that it will not withstand heavy vehicles. Plus it can't withstand multiple seasons of heavy frost heaves. Any surface will crack but rebar holds it together and minimizes vertical displacement. Some concrete masons say 24"on center. Others say 12" depending on the application. My old concrete book says 12. The hog wire does much the same thing for horizontal displacement. If you can find one, The Concrete Finisher's Guide, 2006, published by the Portland Cement Association is a good resource. There are others too. I am not picking you Andy. My family and I, (me not as much) have been in the house building and residential and commercial development business for over 50 years going back to the early 1960's. So when I tell about this, it comes from experience and training. You seem like an industrious guy and that gives us old guys encouragement about the new generation of people in the business. I like your videos.

@cheshstyles
@cheshstyles 6 лет назад
12 inch on center is overkill for a residential apron. My family has been in the trades longer than yours so there! Just kidding by the way but for your education and training: laying out your control joints on your formwork then installing the rebar so it functions with the controls joints is catagorically superior to installing the steel in a simple on center pattern. Have a good one friend :)

Jack Fuller. I didn't see the original video, but if he used the 3000 psi concrete like they use in AL, it will last for years. Andy nice job. Did well on the slab. Am surprised to shit. It didn't not crack. Like the finish on the cement your right. Won't be like a small ski slope with a little bit of snow or ICE ON THE SLAB. Has for you spread the stone dust. On the driveway. You my already know this but. When your finishing. To grade. Always have a full bucket of material. It keeps the bucket. From moving up and down. For getting a better job grading Any area your working on. Plus that machine it's a pedal skidsteer. That's a bitch by its self. Am a hand lever guy. Had S-130 bobcat. Great machine. It pedals. Couldn't. Do shit with it. Also at same time had 773 highflow hands machine. Was great. Well take care keep up the good work. JUNKMANDO

There’s two kinds of concrete, concrete that is cracked and concrete that is going to crack. My understanding is the expansion joints allow for a “controlled” crack rather than having a crack run diagonally through the slab

Another triumph of a video. Would an edging tool on your driveway slabs help with that rough edge (next to the gravel)? It looks a little "choppy" right where you started videoing the slab. But I'm still always amazed at your knowledge and talent in ... everything.

There's so much shale everywhere you dig there. I'll never complain about digging here again.

Do you put rock salt or any weed killer under the gravel? Its prevents weeds from coming back. Plants cant grow with all the salt in the soil.

Wwould have built at grade drain at garage and slight grade for drainage. Level gravel 20' from concrete then drainage swale Next to driveway to pretension pond . you need to look at 24 hour rainfall My area 4" rain in 8 hours. Total 140" per year. A catch basin and culvert is second option to pretension pond for 72 hours drainage that will filter motor oil.

I enjoyed your video. As a sidewalk supervisor, RU-vid has really expanded my expertise. Also, you have a well trained dog. I liked how he washed his muddy feet before getting back on your “like new” front seat.

Nice! I don't know if you remember me a few months ago. I got all the excavating done, except the paths. Building up, insulated, concrete, 200ft of 200A electric service and natural gas. Still a lot more to do!

Slab looked great, I knew it would be fine too. It'll be fine for years to come. I've done similar pours just like that... No big deal at all. Nice work man, glad you're keeping busy!

The slab looks great. Great video Andrew. Wish the customer would pay for you to remove all those stumps to the side of the road. Looked like headstones in a cemetery with so many stumps.
