Revisiting An Amazing Abandoned Mine After 6 Years!

Some of you may remember the first time I explored this mine over 6 years ago. With how much my image quality has improved over those 6 years, I figured it was time for a revisit. I recall this trip taking about 12-13 hours in our first attempt. This time, I was able to cut it down to 10 hours, but it was still a tough day. Accessing this mine requires several miles of bushwhacking through Coney Basin. In both of my trips, I have opted to traverse along the edge of the basin, mostly on talus slopes. While still excruciatingly slow, it is a faster route than battling through the dense foliage in the bottom of the basin.
After 6 years, this mine looked no different than last time. It's quite difficult to access, so I don't think it gets many visitors. The Coney Basin claims were staked in 1892 and the mine was worked up until 1897 when an accident occurred that forced the mine to close. Several miners were killed in an explosion outside of the lower adit, which is now caved. Some work was done between 1897 and the 1940s as there is evidence of more modern mining. Like many cascade range mines, the primary ore body began to diminish at depth. Despite boasting over 1,500 ft. of development, only 200 feet of drifting was done on the primary vein before it pinched out.
This mine was once equipped with a 2,000 foot-long aerial tramway that spanned from the mine down to the mouth of the basin. The tramway is long gone and little remains of it. A serious investment was made into equipment and infrastructure for a mine that produced very little profitable ore. Regardless of the mine's lack of success, it is an interesting time capsule. Among other things, the mine contains a single piston Ingersoll-Seargent air compressor from the late 1800s. One of very few compressors that I have seen in abandoned mines.

I never fail to be impressed with the dedication and energy miners expend hauling all the equipment necessary to bore into solid rock in the hopes of extracting hoped-for wealth up to areas that are a task just to walk to. And I greatly appreciate the effort you put forth just to bring us videos of the past in locations most of us will never get to see in person. Great video, Thank you.

The air compressor is amazing. The fly wheel being nearly 6 ft tall and the pump rod flywheels only 15 in or so would of created a ton of air.

Great content👍. We just came back from the trail but couldn’t figure out how to cross the creek near the logging trailer. Do you need to hike along the creek to upstream to cross it?

Hi Graham, what a cool mine with some great artefacts, especially that Ingersoll compressor. Some nice mineralisation going through the mine, it looks amazing on video. So cool to see all of the miners graffiti from back in the day. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💖

Hi Graham, this was interesting. I've always wondered what mines look like when there is water in them and how they age being neglected.

In basic terms: Stopes define area of a mine where ore was removed either from overhead (preferable), below (underhanded stoping), or from horizontal deposits where pillars are often left in place to support the ceiling.

Thanks for the trip, last 2 times there was HOT for us. More diggings to the right of adit. Lower tunnel was still open when we did it but didn't enter. I like the snow. Cachman's had it claimed in the 80's along with the Cleo and others. I hear that road is now a jungle.

Very helpful video! We never thought to use the talus slope to bypass the DC 🤦🏻‍♂️ . Guess we are going back! Any chance you guys have attempted the next mine to the south? Is ‘she’ accessible?

That was some hard rock mining from the look of it. The good part for the miners was no timbering needed. Kind of surprised to see that it was being worked during the WWII years...must have had some mineral that was of strategic value.

One of the few mines without ore chutes. The dates of the miners' graffiti suggest pre- & post-WW2 workings.

Sure looks like a lot of time, effort, and money were invested in this mine with probably very little, if any, profit to come out of it. Makes you wonder what possessed these men to keep going.
@MinesoftheWest
@MinesoftheWest 2 года назад
Some investor probably dumped a bunch of money into this place. I can't imagine the miners were otherwise interested in driving the crosscut further. Thanks for watching!

Maybe it was on purpose used as a NOL (Net Operations Loss) to create a tax write-off. The wealthy will sometimes go to great lengths to avoid paying taxes.
