In this video I show the completion of a Harrison 190 overhaul. This includes the completion of the mechanical assemblies as well as the installation of a Digital Read Out sourced from M-DRO
The installation of the digital inverter was greatly assisted by Paul Compton who's RU-vid Channel can be found here:

Great to see you too haven't been bitten by a Lion and are able to release a new episode. Whilst I appreciate your brother was bitten by a Lion have you tried Tiger Balm I'm told it can be a great help in cases such as you brothers, he could also use it as a toothpaste, if you give him his tooth brush back.

Glad to see it come together. After your previous video I thought you'd be done in a few weeks. A few years ago while looking for a large lathe (10 HP or so) I found a Harrison 450 in good shape. In Canada Harrison lathes are not too common, this is the only one I have ever seen. It had a wide range of spindle speeds and gear box settings and needed little work so I bought it. I don't think it had seen much use. We had to repair the spindle brake, and found a loose roll pin in the spindle gears but little else had to be done. I made a big steady rest for it because that was missing. I put a Newall readout on it and made a hand crank gear drive for the tailstock cause it was too heavy to move. Most of my activity is on a Hardinge toolroom lathe but this brute takes over when the job is big. I'm still working on the hat.

Mr. Crispin, glad to see you again in working order. One suggestion; you mentioned you made new plexiglass panels for the safety guard. Plexiglass is brittle and will shatter when a e.g. workpiece hits it. You should use polycarbonate for this application. This is tough and doesn't shatter when hit. In fact it's nearly impossible to break. CNC machines use this material too. Downside; it can react with coolant and become also brittle over time. In your application I don't think that's a big issue. Be safe. Btw; I hate these guards. Especially when your turning small work in a collet mounted in the spindle. On milling machines they're really annoying. Small mill in collet close to vice; no way josé; the guard interferes with the table and everything else. I discovered that the people who work on these machines install a secret override to get the work done... Don't tell the safety officer; he'll get you fired. (I think your guide doesn't switch the machine so you're able to choose when to use it. In companies and governmental shops the do.) All the best, Job

Great video Mr Crispin. I have the M-DRO on the mill. It came with a clear cover, which I always leave on. Protects the screen etc. I have some 3ph to 3ph inverters from when I had my sparky business. I need to get them sold. As they are good quality Jaguar items. When we wanted to limit current spike on startup. We fitted soft start units. Much cheaper than a inverter. Regards Steve.

Good to see you back! I eagerly look forward to your future videos! I also like how you used the inverter to provide a "soft start" for your lathe -- I'll have to keep that idea in my "toolbox" for future projects if/when needed. (It reminded me of the "soft start" for the "small" wind tunnel I relocated from across the country & installed at work back in the '90s: it ran/runs(?) on 4160 VAC, 3-phase and still pulled ~1500 amps at start-up while using the "soft start" equipment and ~300 amps steady state. It really made the CNC shop angry at first because the surge could cause "problems" with their machines. However, the Facility Electrical Engineer did his magic and "fixed" the problem well enough to minimize problems around the wind tunnel. ;)

Glad to see you're back! Lathe is looking great. I've used M-DRO for the encoders on my lathe as well, they're very convenient. You've maybe come across them, but they also have a magnetic tape style of encoder - compared with the glass scales, the huge benefit is the head is totally non-contact. E.g. the way I've got things set, I can slide the cross-slide off for maintenance without affecting the alignment of the encoder. They're much easier than the glass scales.

Love the way you present your content. Subtle humour, easy to understand, and always great machining results. Your VFD/VSD I notice has the 'Normal' whistle when ramping. There is a setting (in most drives) where you can raise the switching frequency to take it out of the audio range if it is annoying. If not annoying, then there is no need for parameter adjustment. Thanks for your content. Cheers Pete' New Zealand.

Brings back memories from a million years ago. I trained at the Rolls Royce Training School in Mickleover in 1974, and attended various workshops in Nightingale Road and Sinfin, as well as some other places, as well as Wilmorton and Kedleston Road Colleges. Most of these places ceased in be before you were born @Mr Crispin Yet here you are doing the jobs I once only dreamed of escaping from, and eventually did in 1980. And now as I plan the restoration of some classic Japanese bikes, I’m actually considering buying a lathe and a milling machine! The options seem to be Chinese tools of dubious quality, or something like a Colchester Student - once the stuff of my nightmares! I’m impressed by your rebuild of this Harrison. It now not only looks like a solid and reliable piece of kit, but a somewhat impressively improved one too. Am I jealous? Maybe. There is a third option. I was never a great machinist, and I’m a firm believer in the Clint Eastwood maxim regarding a man knowing his own limitations. So, if you’re local to me, and taking commissions, you might have a customer. Thank you for sharing the best lathe vid I’ve seen so far.

Great overhaul of a very nice lathe. Paint doesn’t add much to the serviceability of the lathe and I hate painting. However, I love the looks and feel proud of my equipment when properly presented with a new paint job. Please consider a IGUS cable carrier or equivalent for your digital readout cables and coolant hose. I installed a cable carrier on my Clausing Colchester lathe in the chip pan area behind the lathe bed and it really protects the cables and neatens up the installation.

Nice to see another individual who knows what is really going on. Having the ability to put into words one’s intentions in such things is paramount in being able to properly present such a video. I salute your efforts. I have a 1986 Colchester 15x50 that needed much attention when it arrived. Appreciate your time and commitment to the presentation of this video. Also, I notice there looks to be an Ainjest Threading attachment. I do not chase threads very often and have yet to use it. I’m accustomed to using the typical dial type thread chasing and have yet to investigate this different approach. As I understand it the Ainjest is great for threading up to a shoulder. Be great if you showed how this unusual threading attachment is properly operated. Thank you.

3:36 - Very clever solution. 35:06 - Did fit a X-Y DRO to the Bridgeport knock-off several years ago, and it was equally a fiddly mash-up of available space, vulnerability and milled adapter plates, but well worth it. Counting cranks and inking marks on masking tape seemed a bit amateurish and they cost several re-dos over the years. The X-axis power feed took longer to fit to the same machine; turned out to be better compromises all around. The power feed, by notes, took 18 months of on and off work. Hard work with only a mill file (wink)... Wish I'd have fitted a 2-axis DRO to my 'new' lathe 8 years ago, but it takes a rigging company to move it away from the wall to do so now, so stops will have to suffice. Strangely the seller of the lathe (Grizzly) offers only generic DROs; no better than you got or what got fitted to my mill.

It's a pleasure to watch you work; generally things go very smoothly. It occurred to me... things tend to go well largely because you take so much care to think it through before you start the physical effort. This might be a matter of personal brain wiring -- other approaches also seem to yield success, e.g. "dive in and invent the solution on the fly." I prefer planning, so... thanks for the examples!
