Hate how your seatbelt doesn't fully retract? Fix it for FREE, all you need to do is rewind the spring. I show you how to fix your seat belt in this motor maintenance video.
Thank you! My TJ has a twist in the seat belt, and without knowing what I was doing, I tried to open it up and exploded the spring. I thought it was a gonner, but watching you replace it gave me the confidence I need to get everything put back together. Maybe I'll put a TV show on and get winding.
Great video ..and thank you for taking the time to show how to do it and also how to fix if you make a mistake especially with the tension spring . Well done ..thank you 👍☘️
Sometimes you need to just pause a video, and go down there and click the "like" button. For me this was around the 4:24 mark. . Thanks for taking one for the team!
Thank you so very much for taking the time to post this video. I rewound the spring into the COVER, added tension, and it worked perfect the first time! Great style, great communication, great editing!!!!!
@@MotorMaintenance The least I can do to thank you is tell you this story: 1973 de Tomaso Pantera, 8,800 miles, absolutely pristine original condition! The belt would not move either way; took the system apart it was pristine inside accept for the exploded spring. Tried everything to understand the design, manuals, Pantera sites, had almost given up but did not want to replace that original retractor as it was in PERFECT original condition and a beautiful design. Then I found your video!! Your style and editing kept my interest until I got to the exploded spring sequence!! TOO FUNNY! Understanding the recoil direction, reverse winding of the spring into the cover, winding the belt back all the way, and preloading the spring by turning the cover, worked perfectly!! Now my Pantera is back to original mint condition. Thank you Sir!
Watched a few other videos. Like this one. Things to try. See if belt retracts when pulling out from the coil mechanism. If it works, then wash the belt and d ring that belt travels through. Next step, I like the baby powder idea on the belt. Then remove screws from the do not remove cover, and tighten the spring, turning counter clockwise while NOT removing the cover. If it doesn't pull out, the problem is on the other side cover, opposite of the do not remove cover. The lever inside may be stuck, or the belt was pulled out too far, and is stuck. Push back with screw driver. Good luck.
I did this it helped soften the belt up alot but it was still not quite enough .Now I let the belt dry thoroughly and i came up with an idea .I got some baby power .I rub it on the belt from the top to bottom and rub it fairly well left some extra power on the belt and retracted it up and down so the extra power could saturate it inside the mechanism a little also .I pulled the belt up and down many times and then the belt started fully retracting once again .I tested it the next day and it worked fine still .the powder is not effected by the heat or cold which is good and it helps the belt stay slick as it allows the belt fabric to slide with much less friction which is the key enemy .Now the day will come when the spring that retracts it will lose its return tension altogether but thats down the road a long ways I hope. I vacuumed up the power and I was done .
Just did this on my 08 Diesel JKU, thanks for the info! Did not have to remove the unit from the JK. Just pull the cover and wound it 3 turns. 15 minute job.
Very helpful. I need to do this fix for Dream Girl's 02 Taurus. I would only suggest soaking the belt in soapy water (use Dawn), wring it out , and let it dry before getting into the mechanical portion of the fix. Many people will have tried cleaning as a first fix but if one hasn't, do it while it's off the vehicle...
Your video saved me-I was able to follow your instructive video and rewind my seat belt retractor in my 1980 Triumph TR7 ! Thanks for sharing your expertise.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Perfect! Thank you. That blue cover could have went like 1000 different directions. It was like you had a eye magnet for the cover.
SOOOO funny!!🤣 I wonder if you sprung the spring on purpose to help us mere tw1ts who let go the cover!!?? Excellent video & thsnks for your patience. Wonder how many HOURS you spent to make this minutes long HowTo! Many thanks & mucho Kudos young Sir 👍 Edit: just read your comment that you popped it 3 times!! Sorry to hear your pain, to help us mere mortals 😅😂🤣👍👍
I had to do "NOT to do" because in my case it was the 40 yr old lubricant that crept into the spring and turned into a gooey paste. The belt would retract completely but it took up to several hours in colder weather. Thanks to brake cleaner spray and these instructions on how to rewind the spring, now the belt works as good as new.
Nice video! good job with the spring rewind without cussing up a storm like I would've. I hope your still making videos. My seat belt made a noise like the spoon flyin' from a hand grenade and now my belt is just laying across the seat so I am looking to see if its salvageable or needs replacing.
@@MotorFeed lol. I have not yet messed with it. Been a year. I believe that the spring material snapped and needs replacing. I will post a comment when done. I'm off next few days I'll try to get to it.
Finally someone made a video for what I needed! Now I broke the handle off of my seat recline on my 2000 Jeep Liberty don’t want to replace it just fix it like drill it out and retap it?
My seat belt retracting assy won't come off.. The nut won't budge even after spraying it with WD40. Would it help if I simply sprayed WD40 in the small gaps between the spring housing?
Wait! You wind the spring in the opposite direction (inside out...)?? my spring broke and exploded (i had a rag over it though and the rag caught it all). Thank you sir i shal have another go tomorrow.. i didn't even think about winding it inside out👍. (Doesn't usually work with clock springs lol)
Thank you, I have a '95 as well! It's a 2.5l, but I have a rare seat pattern, and I have yet to see my paint on another jeep, it's kinda blue kinda green and very metallic. I'd love to see if you have the same!
Took my seatbelt out on my Beetle and it rolled up fully and now won’t extend. It has an electrical harness on it. Is it locked cause it’s not plugged in or was I not supposed to let it fully retract while off the car? Anyone know what’s going on with it?
I did the do not remove and was dumb enough to do it in front of my wife which I will never hear the end of. Any ways do I rewind belt on spool prior to putting spring back on or half way or all the way out????????
First, I feel your pain at least yours wasn't on video! Second, it will not matter if it is wound up, as you add tension to the spring (by rotating the "do not remove" cover) the seat belt should wind back up. so you can do it full spooled half spooled or unspooled, by the end though it should be fully wound.
I kept winding until it made a difference. Keep in mind that if the belt assembly is off the vehicle there is more belt on the drum than would be if in the vehicle.
Hi there! I did exactly as explained on the video but the problem now is that the belt is not coming out. Have you ever experienced that? If so would you be able to help me out? Excellent video BTW. Thanks
If the seat belt is not sitting in a vertical it may not pull out due to rollover precaution built into the mechanism. If it is sitting the same way it would in the car then it may have been over wrapped. Other than that I am not sure, I hope this helps. If you figure it out please let us know!
Motor Maintenance. Yeah I probably over wrapped it. Looks like it is stuck on that end metal part, which I don’t see a way to unstuck. Might have to buy a new one. Anyways. Thanks for the video and for the prompt response.
Motor Maintenance, I ended up pulling all apart, including the spring. Then I was able to release the belt after spraying a little bit of WD40 on it. Then I did exactly like the video and Voila! It is working great again. Thank you
