Patrese did not win any world championship but he still is one of the great of a great era. He drove crazy cars, unsafe too, manual gearbox, turbos, started in the 70s, went through the Turbo era and got to race the active suspensions in the Williams. Unsung hero.
always liked Riccardo, such a nice guy and was never slow.. always right with the top guys..except in 1993.. don't know what was going on there. probably just wanted him there to fill in the 2nd seat and was pretty much on his own.
There is brilliant footage of Ricardo taking his wife for a drive in that Honda Civic Type R round Jerez Circuit. She is screaming for him to slow down & he just stays quiet & smiles all the way knowing that her reaction is being filmed!
1:25. He took his wife for a drive at the Jerez circuit in that Honda Civic. That is well worth watching because she freaked out! All the Italian curse words were coming out of her mouth while Riccardo was just sat there smiling!
Not quite... In late 1987, Frank Williams signed Patrese on for the last two grands prix of the season due to Nigel Mansell's injury. So, he drove the Williams-Honda for two races.
17 years with no driving a Honda powered F1 car? I think he only drove a Honda powered Williams once in 1987. Did he do some testing for Honda in 1991?
There should be a proper gp series run for drivers over 40. Run on f1 Grand Prix weekend. Alesi , frentsen, Prost , mansell. Schumacher, hakkinen. In same cars battling it out. It'd probably end up better then the current f1 champion ship
Agree, possibly the best in our national pack.May be that more talented drivers have been trying but for some reason none of them scored their goal.Alas his nerves were not up the pressure imho.He apparently felt not so comfortable in close fight...exp.if on the long term.
if memory serves me righti heard from a trustable source those remarks about speed and acceleration....but yes, the reasons you mention are also included
now i understand why i heard something about the engine power getting a decrease in 014 or something around that year. The aim must be higher acceleration, with turbo, but lower end speed right?i'm noob with mechanics
The script writer is wrong. The only time I can think of Patrese driving a Honda powered car was the Williams FW11 in Adelaide 1987, 21 years before this test. Not sure about his career at the end of the 70's, but in his Brabham years he had mostly BMW power, Williams was Judd in 88 & Renault 89-92, then Ford with Bennetton in 93.
I come from the future , Honda did terribly wrong with Mclaren , they left and came back to Red Bull Racing , now the best engine supplier in F1 winning 2 drivers championship, and one constructors
