One of the most respected scientists in the world and the biggest draw in secularism, Richard Dawkins always generates impressive crowds when visiting North America. Secularism is sweeping America as a movement, and Richard Dawkins is the catalyst who galvanizes it.
From 1995 to 2008 Richard Dawkins was the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He is an internationally best-selling author. Among his books are The Ancestor’s Tale, The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker, Climbing Mount Improbable, Unweaving the Rainbow, A Devil’s Chaplain, The God Delusion, The Greatest Show on Earth and The Magic of Reality. His most recent books are his two-part autobiography. Part 1 An Appetite for Wonder, released in 2013 and A Brief Candle in the Dark released in 2015.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Royal Society of Literature. His around-the-world speaking tour is the focus of a recent documentary “The Unbelievers” which also features appearances by Woody Allen, Stephen Colbert, Cameron Diaz, Ian McEwan, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Hawking, Eddie Izzard, Bill Pullman, and Sarah Silverman.
Richard will be in conversation with Matt Dillahunty.
Matt Dillahunty is the current host of the webcast and cable access television show "The Atheist Experience," and from 2006 to 2013 served as the president of the Atheist Community of Austin. He is also a founder of the comprehensive counter-apologetics Wiki "Iron Chariots."
Dillahunty is an outspoken atheist and fierce advocate of the concept of separation of church and state. Having been raised as a fundamentalist Baptist and having studied with the intent of going to seminary and becoming a minister before his bout of apostasy, Dillahunty is familiar with the Christian fundamentalist mindset, and very knowledgeable about both the history and the text of the Bible. While he is not formally educated in any scientific field, it's clear from watching his shows that he has amassed enough of a working knowledge of biology, cosmology, and geology to defend these fields from creationists, including Ray Comfort. Dillahunty does not claim to have any expertise in any of these fields and will frequently admit that his knowledge is limited, even as he soundly schools creationists who declare their own willful ignorance of science.

***** Calling me an an "average liberal/PC person" is not a valid argument, it's ad hominem - average conservative/uneducated person who lacks the skills to argue absent fallacies ;) ;) But seriously, saying that bigotry is wrong does NOT make me liberal or PC, it makes YOU a presumptuous fool for making that assumption. What I said was a basic moral truism, and if you disagree with it then you ARE a bigot by definition. Political stance is completely irrelevant, you are just stereotyping and committing a fallacy. And as for Islam being an "evil religion", that is the only thing that you said that is correct. But once again to extend that to bigotry against Muslims per se is still wrong and anybody with any moral character whatsoever knows that, liberal or otherwise.

I think it's a deeper question than simply leaving behind religious ways of thinking. We evolved this ability to create agents in our minds precisely to survive. I mean, a rustle in the bushes could be the wind or a predator, we evolved to prefer the latter as it improves our chances of survival. When we became self aware it was only a malfunction of this circuitry that drove us to believe there were agents behind everything, including behind the wind, fire, animals and even other humans. We thought there was an agent acting on a body giving it life, a spirit and so on. To really evolve past this, we will have to become purely rational beings, and I don't think there really is an evolutionary benefit to this, so we would have to do it through engineering our own DNA. Even in the most secular nations in the world, there are still SOME people that find religion, so clearly we can not leave religion behind by simply trying very hard.

@@Sanddollar1 So you want to try the "not a real Christian" and "not as religious as me" approach? Are you really more religious if you attend a church? Do you kill persons having sex with the same gender? Would you slaughter an entire city because a voice in your head said so? The West has of course inherented something from Christianity, like the school system, but that does NOT mean we are Christian countries. The best countries to live in according to almost all statistics are NOT where the people are the most religious. This is a bit of a weakness of Dawkins. When people try to point out a nuance thats missing from his argument he gets pissed off and starts attacking all philosophers/philosophy in general as if the entire group is just an amorphous blob of haters. I personally think the more engaged parts of philosophy as a subject can be quite useful in this kind of thing. Dillahunty for example is best characterised as a man who payed REALLY CLOSE ATTENTION during epistemology 101. And its the reason hes one of the best around right now.

A brief, 5-step summary of my mental journey from attachment (indecisiveness) to indifference (decisiveness): Start: 1. I am suffering, because I'm not living up to god's expectations. He isn't happy with me. 2. I am suffering, because god is not living up to my own expectations. I am not happy with him. to 3. Perhaps god & I are passing the burden of our happiness onto each other, therefore none of us will ever be happy. 4. I don't really know what makes god happy, but I sure as heck know what makes me happy. End: 5. Therefore, it's only reasonable that the burden of my happiness should unequivocally rest with me. That's when the constant riddle solving came to an end, and so did my indecisions. Now I am more decisive and much happier, and I can only assume with a detached indifference that so is god!

I can't help but get teary eyed knowing there are people out there so dedicated to do good through the means of reason and critical thinking. Coming from a religious family (mexican catholic) and being the only atheist member of it, I do struggle to have a connection with my family on the subjects of religion and humanism which is unfortunate. I wish I could have a solid conversation with my family members without hurting their feelings but I know that's just pie in the sky.

It will take a very long time before religion, superstition and the supernatural will be pulled out of central and South American cultures. I have noticed that the vast majority (if not all) of “possession” videos come from countries in those regions. It must be awful to suffer from a mental illness in those cultures because they will just claim you are possessed by the devil. I feel for you in your situation. Hopefully you can get them to at least think about why they believe what they believe. That is the first step in getting people to let go of it.

"Chrysanthus3 minutes ago Saying atheism is a religion it's like saying abstinence it's a sex position" It isnt alike because you are mistaken. Comparing the two is ridiculous. Your analogue is irrational. Atheism is a religion because its based on the assumption of faith that 'there is no God' Whether or not you participate in sex or not you are still a sexual being. It doesnt change the factors involved in sexuality. It doesnt mean SEX DOESNT EXIST. I love how atheists love to think they are SO rational BUT every time YOU open your mouths you sound like IDIOTS.

Dawkins has the absolute authority on what a 'meme' is as he coined the term.
@thaDjMauz
@thaDjMauz 4 года назад
I respectfully partially disagree. Words (which are in darwins defenition a vehicle for memes) go through their own evolution, and in the end the dominating use is what defines something (because of utility, the whole thing science is based on). Darwins coined defenition of a meme is legitimate, but he does not have the authority of when the dominant culture is wrong. Also, is gif pronounced jif? Because the creator of the format said it is.

Alex Chapman Faith is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Since he never had faith he did not ever have the Holy Spirit since he didn't he never belonged to God. Many pastors and leaders who are actually not saved. What Dillahunty did was just a form of religion. **Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. **Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

Post-truth is as culture in which debate is framed largely by appeals to emotion disconnected from observable reality, and by the repeated assertion of talking points to which factual rebuttals are ignored.
@xebek
@xebek 7 лет назад
alley boulcrest It appears you copy-pasted that entire assertion, but can you provide any independently verified, falsifiable and peer-reviewed evidence for any of your claims? How have you determined that this being exists? If the bible is an accurate representation of its character, then Dawkins' analysis is spot on. Lastly, does the biblical god have perfect foresight? Did it know how reality would play out at the time of creation? If so, it created satan knowing it would rebel and fall, it would create hell to house satan and his compatriots, it would create man knowing man would fall, it knew it would send man to hell, it knew it would have to flood the world as a reset, which would fail, it knew it would have to sacrifice itself TO itself, which would fail for most people and it knew it would pass on the most important message ever in languages that would die out while giving us the ability to think critically yet base salvation on not using that ability at all. Odd plan. I won't even go into detail about its desire to play favorites with "chosen people" and allowing them to slaughter any infidels (it created those other tribes knowing they would end up slaughtered - and just for that express purpose?), the endorsements for slavery and murder and the idea of infinite torture for finite crimes. Yeah, super duper nice guy, that god appears to be. Also, believe or burn is hardly free will. Besides, he knows the future preemptively, right?
7 лет назад
By the way, from the bible alone, Satan is the lesser of 2 evils. He is only responsible for 10 deaths, including the sons of Job (killed with the explicit agreement of Jahveh). By contrast, God kills or orders the killing of between 2,500,000 to 25,000,000 people (estimations vary depending on the scholar). Including women and children (e.g Medianites).

Listening to Richard’s anecdote about being represented by an empty chair at a debate, it occurred to me wouldn’t it be a good idea in debates or public conversations on this subject, if there were always an empty chair and an open invitation for God to attend and put his case in person? I fear that until we can keep religion out of the school room, there will always be someone turning up at the stage door for an autograph.

"This shit makes no sense". Great line, Matt! Religion never made sense to me. My grandma took me to church a couple of times when I was little and I remember being bored to death, thinking that all those grown-ups were playing some kind of a *pretend game*. They couldn't *possibly* believe all that nonsense. And I still believed in Santa back then (in Europe, Santa is just an old guy with presents, no flying reindeer or other magical stuff). Some of use are born completely immune to the BS we call "religion". It took me a while to grasp that grown-ups actually believed that crap. I'm still baffled by this fact.

When Richard Dawkins suggests that it s high time a scientist got the Nobel prize for literature, Dillahunty just moved on. I also don;t understand why he hasn't won a Nobel prize in science for the selfish gene or the extended phenotype.
