We have a 2005 1.8 Mondeo, have had it for 3 years and 70k km. It has done 140k km now. No problems whatsoever. Have changed only rear brake discs and pads. Done oil and filter changes every year or 15k km. Couldn't be more happier about it's reliability (knocks on wood) or handling.

This review just reminds me of how programs like Top Gear have changed over the years (I know this was Men and Motors) As a teen I used to watch TopGear and they used to do reviews like this... real day to day cars explaining what you get, what it will do... the good and bad... practical advice... The kind of mental rationalising that we the buyers would go through to decide what to buy Now, I love the later TopGear programme style.. the great camera work, the soundtrack and the ongoing comedy between jezza, captain slow and the hamster but it seldom covered real family cars... focussing instead on daydreams about Bugatti Veyrons on the Nurburgring and racing against mountain climbers in a Nissan GTR... all very teenage boy bedroom-wall poster stuff I do think reviews like this are sadly missing

Check out OSV car reviews, they still do reviews in that style and they're usually 55+ minutes, which is probably what you want if you're seriously considering investing in a new car. Mind you, I still love watching the grand tour, but for the serious reviews I read or watch the OSV ones.

Just asking but with reviews then did they have to do a specific voice type they sound mind of similar to like james may the bigger guy on top gear who james took over from jason that's his name I think not trying to be rude couldn't remember his name all the reviews I've watched they all sound the same and talk in the same kind of like style I guess

Wow. Scary how a 2001 review can be more current today than it was then. In any case... fantastic review, I didn't miss a single word, this was the golden age of TopGear.

Bought a 2002 1.8 a year and a half ago. Other than changing the oil and filters, nothing else needed changing. Still goes up to 210kmph. On the other hand bought an Astra H 2005 1.7 half a year ago, it's a money pit. And sounds like a tractor. Two years ago a Peugeot 206 2001, same thing, was a money pit. Love the Mondeo.

I had a Mondeo mark 1 hatchback 1.8 litre petrol from 1997- 2017. Absolutely great car for 3 children, holidays in Cornwall and general family duties. It had 8,000 miles on the clock and after 20 excellent years of running well, reaching 110,000 miles and a few costly MOT's, I was reluctant to part with it. I finally exchanged it for a Mark 4 Mondeo hatchback. Beautiful big beast of a car. Comfortable, spacious and boot like a skip. Love it!

This was the best car I have ever owned, a Mondeo from 2002 to 2013 and almost 400.000km ... It never had anything but worn parts changed and repair was dirt cheap (Except rust in the bottom of the doors which was replaced at no cost by Ford), the car was comfortable and quiet to drive... Only thing not to like was the 2.0 petrol enine was a bit thirsty :) Miss the Mondeo and wish I could afford a new one, the new one looks great :)
@pschierhorn

Exactly my experience (including the door rust bit), only with a 2003 model and a 1.8 engine - which is not thirsty considering the size and age of the car, but makes it about as agile as a brick.

My favourite ever Mondeo was the MK1. Japanese looking front, square back (if it was a saloon) and i loved them with the RS body kits. Very simplistic design with simplistic technology yet a modern drive. Think the original Mondeo's were much lighter and handled and performed the best out of all the Mondeo production series.

I just bought a 51 plate 2.0 TDDI Ghia X a few days ago.. surprising amount of extras including heated black leather interior, not too many miles - nice motor actually for the price. Until it caught fire after owning it for 12 hours. Apparently a short circuit on the heated screen washer jets due to water seeping in. Quite an experience when you start seeing flames shooting out from the vents at the bottom of the windscreen, go to slam the brakes on and realise the vacuum hose into the brake servo has completely melted :)

I always liked them as rental cars - comfy and giving a good mileage with a Diesel engine. However, I was never keen on owning one - Ford are great believers in designed life spans and make sure their cars don't last much longer than that - which is why this model has become a rare sight on the road already.

@TheComputec 3 года назад
TDDI very reliable sounds like a tractor TDCI quite reliable... sounds like a tractor but off in the distance.
@drivenmann6211
@drivenmann6211 3 года назад
Disagree. Both had the same block, but tdci was far quicker with its 243lbft of torque. I've had 5 as cabs. Admittedly the TDDi was more reliable at high mileages (less complex fuel/emissions systems) but reliability aside, the TDCi was quick enough to hold on to an ST220 on a twisty road (I've got one of those too). The STTDCi (also had one) is stupidly quick for its class/price, but the engines aren't as strong as the 2.0.
@leoshedden9199
@leoshedden9199 3 года назад
@@drivenmann6211 the later tdci had 130bhp whereas earlier models had around 118bhp I think. Me personally I'd go with Direct injection they do tend to last longer for some bizzare reason like you mentioned but commonrails tend to run into issues in the late 150ks and the fuel economy around town is better too.
@drivenmann6211
@drivenmann6211 3 года назад
@@leoshedden9199 Indeed. High pressure fuel pumps, injectors, EGR valves etc. It's all the stuff that makes them cleaner and more efficient. Much comes down to how well they're serviced, fuel quality etc. but you can get unlucky too. My fuel pump (in STTDCi) failed at 180k. No issues prior - spent £2k fixing (new pump, injectors, complete flush of fuel system), engine went bang a month later. Later spec mk3s with more modern injectors etc seem better. 2 litre "Puma" Duratorq chain drive engine is itself virtually unburstable. Used to drive mine at 3 figure speeds every night (I live in IoM, no overall limit - see vid😄) right up to 250k miles. If serviced (every 10k for me - ALL filters changed) correctly and good fuel/oil they're really tough.

Next to all the old iron i use a 2001 1.8 Duratec here, reliable as fuck, never had any big problems ...... (And im not exactly sparing the material ^^ ). It used to "eat" a shit load of oil (~ 1,5 liter / 1000km), but after switching to MoS² oil, everything works just perfect !

These are great cars although if it's using oil I'm afraid your piston rings are worn which is a fairly common problem with the duratec. That said, my last Mondeo had 290,000 miles on the clock and the engine was still going strong when I replaced it with another Mondeo. I looked at the German motors as a replacement but ended up with another Mondeo with all the extras for £500. No others cars come close if you're wanting value for money.

Bought a Focus from 2014 with 1.0 petrol engine and had last year many problems and cost with it! I wish I kept my old Focus, but I sold it because I had to change the complete clutch and it would be an expensive repair (it was the original clutch)! :-(!!!

The '98 Contour is the same as the Mk2 Mondeo or previous generation Mondeo to this review. I drive a 2ltr Mk 2 & I find I agree with your attitude, it's very reliable has reasonable fuel economy etc & is very comfortable with lots of luxury extras like leather, heated seats & windows, cruise control etc. But the driving is so smooth & easy that it's just a little dull to drive & performance is unremarkable which is exactly what I want. I like cheap luxury & traveling in comfort over style. It's a nice lazy, uninspired drive to my destination.

The materials used especially on the LX model inside are just terrible, even the supposed soft dash was terrible and felt horrible and the analogue clock in the middle of the dash was horrible too. So ye a terrible car overall. Even Skoda were using better quality materials on there dash and doors back then real nice soft touch plastic.

John Stots there is a problem that annoys you like a stuck window and there's one that brings you to a complete halt, mondies do the latter. It was a common problem and it kept on coming, something in the fuel system that completely kills the car. I currently have a new BMW 328i and never had any problems at all. I also have a 14 year old Hyundai Galloper which is not sold in the UK and it goes like a clockwork every time, never let me down ever.

Ford said it has a disposable engine (thus the car is disposable) this guy never knew this, they become knackered due to oil ring wear then you scrap it. Like I've had to.

You are lucky electric problems haven't yet crept in. Seriously, why would Ford fit very complicated electric parts when all they do is break up all the time and giving up the ghost? You're better off with a Proton.

If the clutch failed after a couple of weeks then that tells me that maybe you're just not very good at buying used cars. Try buying one that isn't a lemon next time..

Horrible bar stool drivers seat, too much noise, poor spec and rust. Plus, it became structurally unstable in crash testing.

If you are considering this as a second hand purchase please forget it. Buy something less complicated and more reliable, preferably Asian and you'll thank me.
