It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time we examine a 2006 Ford Mondeo Mark III 2.0 Ghia X Automatic and discover a slightly disappointing engine and gearbox combination, missing parking sensors, rather a smooth ride, and really little anything of any consequence at all.... Nothing untoward, then!
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

I tend to agree with your analysis about “premium” brands. As you know I have a BMW 4 series as a daily driver and because BMW’s are so ubiquitous I don’t consider it anything special, more like a 21st century Ford Cortina. I prefer driving my Austin Maestro which attracts much more interest!
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, as you may have seen on the video about the Top Ten Best-Selling Cars of March 2021, BMW and Mercedes are close to outselling Ford now, and Volkswagen actually did last month. I see what you mean about the Cortina comparison, it is strange, isn't it? I do indeed enjoy your Maestro, sir, and this Mondeo!

I still have to double take when I'm reminded that an 06 plate is now 15 years old. I'd totally forgotten about the oval Ford badge shaped clock and the bonnet opening with the key. Ford's heated front windscreens are a joy too. Never knew these had a Mazda engine option but that can only be a good thing. I always thought Ford had looked at the Passat shape when they came up with the 2nd Gen Mondeo as there are definite similarities Lovely car that looks like it should go on for many a year yet.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, sir! You are correct about the Mazda engine options. I would personally prefer a different engine and gearbox, but this will do. It actually doesn't look 15 years old, recently. The Passat B5 must have been an influence on this one, just as the Honda Accord and Nissan Primera were an influence on the Mark I.

So if you want a premium car buy a Mondeo Mark III. I always wanted a Mondeo but as I have to park in a standard sized garage these are just too big to fit inside. That is also very typical of Ford to supply a luxury car with lots of toys but without parking sensors. What a truly fine example with possibly one of the lowest mileages on a 15 year old Mondeo. A great review sir!

A firm favourite of mine and probably the best version of the Mondeo. Drove many over the years largely 1.8 LX and the 2.0 LX rep specials forbidden fuel powered engines as well. They'll do the job nicely for no money, although for 2021 Britain stick with the petrols the 1.8 I always found was enough engine power. The sad thing is the company car sales reps which is really what the Mondeo, Sierra and Cavalier were all about is a role that's changed quite a bit, now it's all done over the internet in offices or homes up and down the country.

Mention of the Mazda 1.8 engine in the Volvo C30 immediately brought me back to this Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 litre. It may not be a 2.5 V6 but neither is it a 1.6 or 1.8. A two litre engine, be it Renault, Mercedes, Stellantis, VW, Ford or indeed Toyota or Mazda is a fine, flexible and understressed motor. I really fancy one of these Mk3 Mondeos in Ghia or Titanium trim as a Classic.

A very pleasant driving review -yes don't judge the Mondeo by the X type Jag on rust issues, Don't think I have never seen a Mondeo that needed structural welding. Possibly the worst version was the (cracking bumper) MK2 which were probably slung together because of the unexpected demand. Even the MK1 was a well-made car, but obviously had the teething problems of a new model like terrible headlamps, these usually did not die from rust but from the (at the time) unexpected complications (hence high labour costs)of replacing the clutch and the rear brake pipes etc, also the auto boxes were only good for about 75K. But as you imply today you cannot really go wrong with a 1.8 manual petrol if you are down on your luck and the last thing you want to worry about is the car. Oh yes and if you are wary of diesel, then a Mondeo diesel will confirm your worst nightmares LOL
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, good old bumper cracks! Mr Coleman was telling me about them the other day. This car seemed very rust free indeed. I had one of these a few years ago - a humble '53' plate 1.8LX in 'Machine Silver' rather than a posh 2.0 Ghia though. I really rather liked it - a good looking, practical and nice driving car in my opinion that was only let down a tad by some cheap feeling plastics and a tendency to let water into the front passenger footwell - I later learned this was because of a incorrectly fitted pollen filter. People claim that the Mk4 Mondeo was a big improvement - well having owned both all I can say is that the Mk4 I replaced my old Mk3 with was less reliable and not as well styled in my opinion. Methinks that these would still make a decent cheap family car if you could find a good one - but good luck finding one with decent OEM spec alloy wheels!

Yes, we do like these Mark III Mondeos, although we do need to avoid speaking about the forbidden fuel versions, of course. The post-facelift interiors like this are a bit better than the earlier ones, but by the standards of the day, this is still a very nice quality car for the price. I don't know if the Mark IV was better, never actually had the opportunity to try one... These are OEM specification wheels, but they aren't necessarily in the best condition.

“Everything we do... everything we do...” 😉 Wow Mr Lloyd. That is a lot of car for not a lot of money! I’ve always liked Mondeos (Fords in general really); we’ve had a lot of them in the family over the years and never had any serious trouble. All day long for under & £ 1000. I have to confess that I like a 2 litre, so I would keep the engine or go 2.5 V6. The interior is really lovely. I do have long term experience of a 2007 Edge which was very easy to live with, though it did not have the gorgeous leather or the Sony Stereo. I apologise now. I know a gentleman who went from Sierra to Mk1, 2 and 3 Mondeos in succession. His preferred engine was not one that we would discuss. However, just outside of the warranty the fuel system failed incurring & £2000 +of repairs. This must be stressed for buyers who need to run Forbidden Fuel engines. Otherwise, a quality car and this facelift being the best looking version. Better even than the Mk4 that replaced it. So glad you covered this Joseph, I hope you enjoyed the drive, the ride in the Edge, even with the big wheels was sublime.

The automatic box in these isn't a good one, it's not very nice to drive with and it's also not very strong. It is fair to say that the 2.0 litre Duratec engine is much nicer with a manual box as you can really make the rev happy engine sing, and they do feel much quicker than the performance figures suggest. Mileage isn't really an issue with these, maintenance history is everything as they can throw up some fairly expensive faults if not maintained well, but with good maintenance 3 or 400,000 miles isn't a problem. Service parts are extremely cheap so there's really no excuse for a poor maintenance history and they're generally pretty easy to work on, as befits a vehicle largely designed for high mileage use as they need to have limited down time...
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, the owner did say to me that they didn't like the automatic gearbox, and I am inclined to agree. I may be able to drive a 2.0 Focus with this engine and a manual gearbox at some stage, so we will be able to see if it sounds a bit better in that form. @@lloydvehicleconsulting I think rear parking sensors were an option on these, but only ever an option so a late car built when they were using up excess parts in the factories is probably the best option to find an example with factory parking sensors, though I have no idea if the system used on those was actually any good. It'll be interesting to see how the manual Focus compares. I think, in general, one of these is just amazing value now as there are really nice examples out there which don't really cost any more than average ones, and you just get so much car for your money. @@lloydvehicleconsulting The V6 is nice. The 2.5 isn't much of an upgrade from the 2.0 and you pay a lot more in road tax and fuel, but the 3.0, which you could also get in the Ghia X, although not full ST220 spec, isn't actually noticeably slower on the road and falls in the same tax bracket as the 2.5. They're fairly rare, certainly compared to the 4-cylinder cars, but they tend to be similarly cheap due to the high road tax and not great mpg figures, though a lot of people report economy that's a lot better then the factory figures. I like this Mondeo! Front reminds me of a Ford Focus, as well as the side view. Of course, the Focus is smaller. Even the interior is similar to a US Ford product of the same production year! Ford wants profits before anything else, so they sell overpriced trucks (SUV'S). The same goes for GM. I think it is an horrendous decision, as Hyundai and KIA will sell more cars than the two US manufacturers. I also feel that BMW and Mercedes-Benz have become common; everyone has one, like a Ford or a Vauxhall. Both German marques have lost their caché, and both have are known as not being reliable and expensive to repair out of warranty. Same goes for Audi, very common. No appeal for me whatsoever! I would rather have a Jaguar X-Type, and yes, it might be a Mondeo underneath, but it is a Jaguar, especially here in the US, it was AWD.
