Rodgers and Hart were an American songwriting partnership between composer Richard Rodgers 1902-1979 and the lyricist Lorenz Hart 1895-1943. They worked together on 28 stage musicals and more than 500 songs from 1919 until Hart's death in 1943.
With a Song in My Heart" is a show tune from the 1929 Rodgers and Hart musical 'Spring Is Here'. What is remembered on this video is that It was also the memorable signature tune for a BBC radio programme, "Two Way Family Favourites" (original played by Andre Kostelanetz and his Orchestra) which was presented by a variety of well-known radio personalities including Cliff Michelmore, Jean Metcalfe, Michael Aspel, Judith Chalmers and Sarah Kennedy. Its final presenter was Jean Challis.
We of a certain generation associate this popular signature tune with Sunday mornings from only yesterday. The veg is bubbling away and the roast in the oven for Sunday lunch ... Mom's in kitchen, of course..... while dad's washing the car and there's a slight feeling of boredom in the air, having just come back from Sunday school and there's not much to do in the way of playing before we all sit down to dine the ubiquitous Sunday Lunch, a culinary masterpiece hours in the preparation and mere minutes in consumption! O happy and innocent days!
