Another enjoyable update. Escort looked and sounded great when it was last running. Re the restrictor size, I think it's a shame that they are homologated at 32mm, would be better if it was 34mm (imo) and R5s could run any event in Europe and UK at this size. No need to mess with mapping between events. Might also help give a bit more power parity with the 2.5litre+ Millingtons, and the extra torque from the R5 motors might help offset the weight penalty of the newer cars. Cost is a real issue though for all rallying. We need some entry level options like there were with the old Corsa's and Micra's that don't cost a fortune to buy or run. Pump fuel only, and limit number of tyres per event to 1 set ...that'll help encourage some tyre management skills that bode well when using a more potent car. :-)
Nice to see someone vlogging about their rallying. There definitely needs to be more of this sort of thing. Interesting to get an insight into the realities of running an R5 car. Definitely agree on the regulations. I think it would make more sense if R5 cars ran in homologated spec, and I think there definitely needs to be a discussion surrounding modified cars and weight limits. There is little incentive to build a more modern car when old cars can run so much lighter. Not making it any easier for the sport to attract a younger audience when so many of the cars were built before they were born!
I agree to some degree. Outlawing cars retrospectively is never going to help the sport. But I take your point. For me, capacity limits are the enemy. We need more RGT style cars, like Porsche GT3s. That would shake up the tarmac rallying for sure. Accessible and relevant to many more people. If you can run a Darrian, which let’s face it, is a “production” car by stealth, why not a big engines Porsche? The capacity limits centre around a Rover V8 for goodness sake 😂 Cat 2 logbook rules only go so far in addressing the issue as far as I can tell.
@@Richard_Weaver Agreed. I wouldn't go as far as banning any existing cars, but I think it's time we changed the weight limits to reflect modern cars. It's mad that an Escort/Chevette/Sunbeam can be fitted with a modern engine, gearbox and suspension, but run at a weight limit from the 1970s. As you say, the capacity limits definitely don't help either. Most of the interesting modern RWD cars are hamstrung by the CC limits, otherwise we could have M3s, 350Zs and the like as viable options
Yes it does. There is irony that is not lost on me in my post! However, it is deemed, for example, in Belgium, that you are permitted to use paddle shift, but must retain the 32mm. It’s a mad world 😂
