Part 1: • Richie Rich on Partici...
--------
In this clip, Richie Rich speaks about working at McDonald's when he was a teenager and one of his co-workers giving him his nickname. After rapping for two years, Richie explained how he formed the group "415" and recorded his first song, "Don't Do It" at the end of the summer in 1989. Due to the timing of its release, Richie explained how his song traveled around as people took the cassette with them to college, and he spoke about Snoop Dogg naming him as an influence early in his career.

I disagree on could've been the GOAT and I'll explain, bear with me ;) Love how open Richie Rich is, though he's been on some pimp shit as far as rapping since early on along with guys like Rappin' 4-Tay and I get the whole alter-ego thing, but I wonder if there's more to it. The Bay is pretty known for rapping about playa stuff so maybe he just rolled with it. I think that's where RR was limited, he didn't really rap about serious issues, politics etc. Just stayed in his lane and to be frank, while he could spit, he was never going to be that big once rap started to change. He's perfect for that late 80s / early 90s era, but had to diversify in order to get big and just never did. Same goes for a lot of Bay Area rappers. Just very laid back, chill, raw voice type of rappers for the most part; Ray Luv, B-Legit, Richie Rich, D-Shot, 4 Tay, etc. It's funny because current music could be perfect for some of those Bay Area flows. E-40 made it probably because he was different, Too Short I have no clue since he stayed the same, Spice 1 & Mac Mall should've been bigger. Luniz got lucky with 5 on it, though they were alright. 4-Tay is most underrated in my opinion, he showed he could flow in a variety of ways but just never got out of the pimp playa shit, independent labels and production. C-Bo was pretty big I think as he should, though also stayed in his lane. At some point people need more than just gangster, player stuff. Again in the modern era, the Bay could've blown up even more and stayed mainstream for longer.
@CaliCool91
@CaliCool91 4 года назад
@@yallasama I hear you bro. IMO a "GOAT" out West is somebody like DJ Quik. Universally respected across the nationally hip-hop scene but truly one of the best in their region. Richie Rich never reached a DJ Quik level but I feel he could've hit that point, or even a E-40 level tbh.
@yallasama
@yallasama 4 года назад
@@CaliCool91 I mean in terms of lyrics E-40 is on another level. Richie Rich's lyrics are not that impressive for the most part. His flow was cool, but I think with his voice and style he needed to diversify, even if it was just topic wise. It's obvious he got stuck in just rapping the same type of stuff over and over. This is probably a large portion of rappers, but to me the GOATs are rappers who can rap slow and fast, can touch on any subject and rise above the pimp-playa-gangsta shit. I cannot blame him necessarily, the Bay never got the love they deserved and the only reason E-40 became the biggest was that new style (crunk?) he decided to roll with or partly invent. I hate it myself, but his awkward style already got him the most exposure I think. From listening to every album of 4 Tay I know he really touched on different subjects, but for him and plenty of bay area rappers the problem is part production. I don't think they had the best - aside from a few dope ones who might have become too expensive.

I had the 415 Nu Niggaz On Tha Blokkk album and it had some pretty cool tracks on there. One of my favorites was "Poor Man's Dream" and DJ Daryl production was pretty tight on the album too. Looking forward to hearing the rest of this interview.
