Rick's tragedy is that he knows that there is infinent versions of him and that there are infinent of other lifeforms which takes away the importance of himself, his family and humanity as a whole, but he still wants to have meaning, but his knowledge and world view doesn't allow room for it. Rick is someone who accepts the reality of the situation and isn't someone who buys the "make your own meaning" message. He realises his own species insignificance. He deals with it by engaging into hedonism, like partying, playing games, do science and watch TV. He also gives a standard of importance which to him is knowledge and science. Hedonism and science is how he deals with a apathatical universe. Love is something he has a problem with as love is something you give to something or someone special, a person, your family but the reality is that, in Rick's world, no one is special. His knowledge of this makes it irrational to ascribe meaning to anything, which is why our Rick and other Ricks refer to our Rick as irrational because he express remorse and care to Morty. Rick wants meaning though he doesn't admit it. He wants to love his family and grandkids but he can't accept that about himself since he thinks it would be irrational. They are after all just part of an infinent number of other versions.
CallmeDoctor YourPaco tl;dr basically what I got was your mad I don't spell things like you Nigga and your also conflate being do stupid you can't detect sarcasm or insincerity with mind reading. How did I do?
CallmeDoctor YourPaco holy heck I didn't even read what you said about autism lmao, its not trying to place autism unto onesself its making fun of "autistic behaviour" you really need to expand what you consume from the internet beyond reddit tier content
I always thought it actually meant something when Rick says "Summer you opinion means very little to me.", because he actually hesitates for a second and doesn't say her opinion means nothing to him. Just very little. Which is likely more than he values most anyone else's.
If rick is so smart that he's aware of being in a cartoon does that mean that Mr.poopybutthole is just as smart as he is because he's aware of being in a tv show as well?
Rick Sanchez is in the same boat as Deadpool and Joker, they are so fucking intelligent, they ride a fine line between genius and insanity and because of that, they can see things "we" can't see.
rick has opportunities to talk to others who match his intelligence. He pushes them away. Like the Citadel of Ricks, and also happens in the battery episode. Anyone remember the smart green guy’s name?
I don't think anyone in the show matches his intelligence. He played the citadel of ricks like buffoons and they are the closest in intelligence to him. He didn't play one of them, he's outsmarted and played them so many times he's considered the Rickest Rick.
It's hard to call him a narcissist when he is fucking right about everything, always achieves impossible feats, and truly has no peer, just makes him self aware i think.
super cat not a narcissist when you are correct all the time, know everything, can solve anything, have no peer, are barely human due to your godlike intellect and resourcefulness, are immortal, technically and gets whatever he wants, manipulation being a more fun way of accomplishing his goal instead of just simply inventing some impossible tool.
He is a narcissist.. I don't know how much research they actually put into this video but it seemed to be very little as Rick himself admits he's entitled and a narcissist, so I don't know why it's up for debate. When Healthy Rick and Toxic Rick were arguing on the moon tower, Healthy Rick said that Toxic Rick contained among other things, his narcissism and entitlement, which were the first two he listed so he's fully aware of them.
Rick isn't "alone in the universe" because he's too smart, he's alone in the universe because WE ALL ARE. He doesn't fail to maintain lasting relationships (which isn't exactly true, BTW, he has friends and cares for his family in a way, even though he strongly dislikes that fact - as was demonstrated in "Rest and Ricklaxation") because of his intelligence, he doesn't care for those relationships like many people do because he knows that there are INFINITE iterations of EVERY person, so if his relationship with one particular iteration of a person fails he knows that there is always another.
I desperately want to see Rick show caring and loving emotions toward his family, like most of the audience does. Isn’t it a fact that Ricks hate themselves more than anything? Well if that’s true and Rick still loves himself enough to keep on going on adventures and staying alive and caring about even the littlest things, does that mean that he shows more love for his family than he does himself?
Rick has shown some loving emotions to his family. He nearly sacrificed himself to save Morty by giving him his collar. He thinks of people as concepts but not individuals but he still loves them sort of
Rick isn’t a narcissist if he is literally the smartest being in the multi verse. He frequently admits his faults ie being a bad father and an alcoholic. His views may be misanthropic but that doesn’t mean he is wrong, just less tolerant.
Can you Analyse the Fire nation Royal family? I like to know why Iroh turned out so chill while Ozai became a douche. It seems to parelle Azula and Zuko in a way.
hassan khan well a quick dip in is that Zuko and Iroh both suffered traumatic losses that they ended up learning from. Both Ozai and Azula were the second born and despite being very talented, were destined by the order of their birth to never be powerful. This made them desperate for power.
Iroh was once as ruthless as his brother, Ozai. Remember, he was a great general of the FIRE NATION - the nation that was conquering and destroying everything! But when he suffered a humiliating defeat in the Earth Kingdom and lost his son, he started to reevaluate what's important in life - which was why he stepped down from succession to the throne and took on the role of a supportive father figure to Zuko who he sympathized with after witnessing how terribly Ozai treated him.
Rick does NOT fit most of the requirements of being a narcissist. Most of those requirements require Rick to be delusional in each respect. Rick is NOT delusional. What makes Rick so special is that he does rightfully deserve being able to act like a narcissist without BEING one.
Rick disagrees with you. Healthy Rick points it out to Toxic Rick that he is entitled and a narcissist when they are combined. Go watch this clip, and he says it at 1:17 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-up4i3sMBl94.html
@S.M.P That's ridiculous. Just because you believe yourself superior to others doesn't give you the right to treat others like shit. Rick is manipulative and abusive and all these 12 year old fan boys want to be like him. Fuck Rick. He's not all that.
It seems the common theme in Rick's lasting relationships if trauma bonding. Morty, Summer, Birdperson... These are all people he had nearly died with but made it out together.
*You know whats more awesome then ricks portal gun.* His attitude, to not care what others think or their ego.His abilities are to not be weak emotionally but strong. He stands up for himself it's not about who's right or wrong. He simply is getting schwifty, he is himself .
Everyone saying Rick isn't a narcissist needs to realize that he literally tells toxic Rick that he had his narcissism removed. So not only is he a narcissist, but he's aware that he is.
there's a lot of videos on youtube exploring the philosophy and psychology of Rick and Morty, but this video is the deepest. BY FAR. Thank you so much ScreenPrism
Trippy ThaGod So can a lot of these theories. But there is evidence that he is smarter than he's often portrayed to be. I suppose that the question is kind of a mute point because if there's "an infinite number of realities" than there's is one we're Morty is a bonafide genius.
20teamplayer The only confusing thing about that is that Rick while saying there are infinite realities (which is a real hypothesis in science) also says there are limited number of universe's they can jump to.
Shady D That might be by design. He may have preprogrammed the gun to screen out realities that are toxic to humans. Or perhaps there's some quantum mechanic rule that would cause realities to start breaking down if they kept moving from one to the next.
Yeah, the show is funny AF but has a lot of undertones, unlike purely raunchy comedies like Family Guy or South Park. And R&M is certainly superior because of it.
I just watched three R&M videos from this channel and I have to subscribe. Not because I'm an R&M fanboy, but because there's a great deal of thought and intelligence put into SP's work. This show is one of the best, but story-based art is such a great tool for thinking about self and life. I appreciate people who, are first more smarter than I, and can squeeze out so much meaning.
God this show is just so amazing all around I don't know what we've done to deserve it. I hope that the writers and creators know what a precious gem they have and how amazing of an experience they have given so many people
This is so concise and informative. I’d like to think of Rick’s life as living knowing all the tricks inside the magician’s hat, and so when the magician performs his/her magic trick he wouldn’t be surprised anymore
'Too much knowledge ain't good for you' is a phrase that you used to puzzle and amaze me... Rick is the embodiment of that statement . In reality, I don't think knowledge is the problem, if anything, it's what you do with it.
This feedback is not meant to be critical, I really appreciate the level of depth of the analysis and the quality of the writing on this channel. Rick is a narcissist but he does not have Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Those two things are not the same thing. Rick lacks a huge cornerstone of NPD--he doesn't care about the opinions of others. People with NPD very much care and in fact become enraged and vengeful when people don't worship them. Rick is the opposite of this. While he gets irritated when people get in his way, he isn't personally offended. If one were to diagnose Rick, he would be an alcoholic. His behaviors display a lot of signs of Anti Social Personality Disorder (aka sociopath) but in the moments he feels bad, you can see that he is only numb because he self medicates. At heart he does care. If he were truly a ASPD, he would not have those moments of remorse and feeling bad. ASPD also don't come across as cynical.
Something I haven't seen asked is why did Rick leave his first Morty if he loved him. The clip with him and his robot eye shows he could've been shot in the head but did he repair himself I'd like to see something on this
I feel that....Rick is such a Rick, because he literally is always right. He is a narcissist because there is no other way for him to perceive himself, due to the fact he's never wrong. The reason he has Morty accompany him, is in hopes that if Morty, someone who is so....well, Morty, could prove Rick to be wrong, then perhaps he can rid himself of said narcissism, thus being able to care for his family as he should. Which shows in the fact there are times when you can see Rick cares, even for Jerry. When Jerry decided to not go in the house that one episode, you see Rick smile as if to say, "You're doin good, you're learning Jerry"....of course Jerry eventually tried to go in and Rick became such a Rick again...but the point still remains.
Rick has a lot of problems going on with himself. Long description short, Rick makes himself seem like a nihilistic, uncaring asshole to everyone around him as he is afraid of opening up, and the truth is, Rick deeply loves his family and as shown in the show, protects and saves them multiple times. Even if there are infinite versions of his family members, he still doesn't want to let his guard down and possibly lose his family. He loves them. He just hides it so well, that even Morty is now convinced that Rick cares about nothing and no one, which isn't the case.
Alright! At this point I’ve become such a fan of Screen Prism that I’ve gone to the playlist tab on your channel & I’m divin all in!!! What better place to start then the Rick & Morty playlist!!!
Man this channel is incredible, so in-depth and insightful. Do you guys have a whole team that comes up with these connections and theories or do you guys do it on your own?
The interaction at the Jerry Jamboree is significant, because that scene with the Jerry mix-up shows that we did not follow C-137's Rick and Morty home. The Rick that asked if that was 5126 Jerry, was our C-137 Rick and the Rick and Morty that did not have a ticket was another universe's Rick. When we followed them home, that's when we were introduced to Mr. Poopy Butthole, signifying that we were in an alternate universe. Anytime Mr. Poopy Butthole is in the show, we are with alternate Rick and Morty. Anytime there is no Mr. Poopy Butthole, there is a good chance that we are with C-137 Rick. Think about that for a minute...
Theres so many wrongs pointed out in this video, first that Rick is a narcissist which isn't true he really is special from everyone and not only believes it but is it as a fact. Second, saying his original Beth said that he left her mother doesnt mean he left Beth and never came to visit Morty when he was born. The other Beth isn't even his Beth so you can disregard everything she says about him.
0:45 - Well thing his this ended up being true af. He also DOES have a lot of enemies. He does have unlimited power with that portal gun essentially. Narcissism implies it’s irrational or unwarranted.
Rick doesn't think he's smarter than everyone else though, He IS. that does not excuse behaving badly towards others of course, or acting like he does, but he is correct that he's the smartest one in practically any room he walks into. And that very same intelligence and knowledge is the source of so much of his misery. he's always drunk and doing crazy things to distract himself.
Rick is pure truth Morty is a mix of kindness(ignorance) and intelligence This is why Rick is always with Morty. Morty has the ability to be better than him.
Rick is not particularly envious. The only times he exhibited envy is when dealing with the Morty liking the Vindicators more than him. Other than that, you dont see him exhibiting envy towards anyone, why would he? He is fucking RICK!!!!
Actually surprised how high-content this is. Actual scientific references and on-point analysis shows respect for the audience. However watching this is nothing but a waste of time and milking Rick &Morty for views, you people, for what it's worth, are doing a good job.
I mean, it could easily be the same morty he sees as a baby. Rick could have easily used his portal gun to check in on his family whenever, regardless of whether or not his family knows. It could be a different morty in his memories, but it could just as easily be the same morty we know and love.
Rick was once a loving rick, who raise a family and worked for the citadel. He groomed his Morty as a precarious child, the citadel was in disagreement, he quit the citadel and continued tutoring Morty to the point where he began exceeding Rick's capacity. Rick grew terrified and detached, Morty began to act out, which in events leads to rick abandantment of the family.
The answer is all of the above. Also, he's killed himself multiple times. Sometimes in battle, sometimes by accident, sometimes out of mercy. Plot twist: 8:34 he mixed in a little of his own DNA.
i don't honestly think rick is a narcissist narcissism is about *believing* you are special having *fantasies* you are powerful rick isn't believing and it's not a fantasy, he is clearly special and clearly has powers on par with deities, he has the actions to back up his "narcissism"
Rick isn't a narcisist, he is simply put just a nihilist. Let us look at the describtion: >>Nihilism (/ˈnaɪ.ɪlɪzəm/ or /ˈniː.ɪlɪzəm/; from the Latin nihil, nothing) is a philosophical doctrine that suggests the lack of belief in one or more reputedly meaningful aspects of life. Most commonly, nihilism is presented in the form of existential nihilism, which argues that life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value.[1] Moral nihilists assert that there is no inherent morality, and that accepted moral values are abstractly contrived. Nihilism may also take epistemological, ontological, or metaphysical forms, meaning respectively that, in some aspect, knowledge is not possible, or reality does not actually exist.
As a medical doctor, I must say that giving personality disorder diagnosis by simply matching the behaviour to the criteria is extremely dangerous. First of all, most personality disorder has to gone through ruling out of other possibility, including mood disorder and psychiatric disorder. In that case, Rick would probably be diagnosed of bipolar disorder type II even before being diagnosed of narcissistic personality disorder. Second of all, there are plenty of space between normal people and people diagnosed of personality disorder. There are people who would be thought of having some trait rather than having personality disorder. Last and the most important of all, most personality disorder has its core. Type B personality disorder, which include narcissistic personality disorder, is the disruptive formation of self. Therefore the narcissistic part of his personality disorder comes from insecurity. That would also cause the manipulation of others to be more of a "I would make you to work for me and I'll take all the credit" kind of manipulation, which was something that never happened in the show. On the other hand, some people with this diagnosis would have a bubble that would explode when poked. Following regression and insecurity can be found. Have you ever seen Rick's insecurity about his self throughout the show? At least I don't. It's save to say he is narcissistic, but it is somehow misleading to put him as narcissistic personality disorder, to say the least.
Every time Rick opens himself up to someone, they leave. Beth's mother is believed to have died, Evil Morty ostensibly left freely once aquiring the ability to, Rick's circle of friends drifted apart reuniting only under special occasions, Birdperson died (after he himself opened up to an outsider), Unity left Rick twice, the list goes on. That'd make a Rick of anyone.
Know what we know now, what makes Rick the way he is, is because he initially rejected being an adventurous scientist, and simply wanted to be a family man. That is until it was ripped away from him by Rick Prime, and his years of seeking revenge on the Rick that devastated his life is what turned him in to the bitter, alcoholic, cynic that we know now. The reality is Rick is just another deeply disturbed and broken man, who just happens to be a super genius...
Folks keep saying that Rick has been gone for a decade so this can't be his original Morty because he was holding a Morty in his memories. But he has a portal gun. He could have popped in to check on his newborn grandson without anyone ever knowing
He's Machiavellian, not a Narcissist. He doesnt have "delusions" of grandeur, he actually is "grand", making him the real deal (a M), not a fake (a N). His awareness of this makes him feel alone, cause to him, its like a normal person trying to relate to and have a meaningful conversation with an amoeba, even when it comes to those who are closer to himself than most. So instead of trying to force the closer thing to work, he opts for going with someone with a lot of heart b/c of how dumb they are, who also happens to act as his much needed "rock" to keep him in check, but cant weigh him down when his rock is "wrong" b/c he knows better as he's not dumb. [And for all the other reasons he keeps Morty around] ~ Making him "humble" enough (out of his own [emotional] intelligence) to know what his needs are and goes after that, and supplementing his need for acceptance of [ppl who dont exist] with the shallow adoration of those who will at least "glorify" him for being the "better than them" person that he actually is, (not has the delusion of being) b/c thats as close to the "real thing" that he can see himself getting, which is why he's so sad all the time. Despite popular opinion, in the world of the blind the one eyed man is not king, he is ostracized, institutionalized, etc. and unlike that one eyed man, Rick has both eyes, and they are wide open. Its not that he doesnt care, its that he cares so much, but also "knows better" cause he's so not dumb. Thus making his actions appear polarizing due to them being so rarely combined in one person. (he is somewhat codependent - he knows he needs balance, and that Morty is his counter balance, but he's mad at himself for not being able to "fix that venerability" b/c it keeps causing him pain). He IS avoidant though, but due to his personality type, not b/c there is something "wrong" with him.
I think that Rick needs a new philosophy. Budishm for example. Rick once said something along the line that once you know that life is meaningless the universe is yours. Good, because personally I can find plenty of meaning in a sandbox. Freedom equals happiness, but only if you decide to see it that way.
