The concept of Rick Astly covering Foo Fighters sounds like something a youtube channel would conceive using Ai vocal programs, but Rick was the first to act ❤
@@anti_honey they said an artist who loves to cover other people's songs covering someone else's song seemed like an AI generated concept what else am I supposed to get out of it
I still can’t believe that it took turning Rick Astley into a living meme, for multiple entire generations to realise that the man is actually an absolute legend and a treasure. Hats off!
The Foos performed Never Gonna Give You Up with Rick at one of their shows. It's cool to see him show his love and appreciation for one of Dave's greatest songs ever written
@@Natachamarins They did it first in Tokyo then again in London, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3GE0AiC-mi8.htmlsi=fBPsirNowb27nMtd ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IdkCEioCp24.htmlsi=bhUJQjGC5FccQ8YH
I actually thought "oh God, what's this gonna sound like" He did it respect for sure...totally nailed it...and that guitar playing...damn! Well done Rick Astley!
I'm so glad Astley decided to not just be a relic of the 80's. So happy we still have him partying with us in 2023. He's a national treasure. That's a fact.
A good role model isn’t he. Fame in the 80s, didn’t get too big for his boots and stayed doing what he loves fame or not. Then rode the meme with perfection really and used it to further continue what he loves with a ton of new fans. The best marketers and PR teams couldn’t have done it better since there was no rule book for what to do when you’re a massive meme. (Just don’t do what Streisand did).
Right? It takes a special kind of artist to lean in the way he did to Rickrolling, and mount, not just a comeback, but an entirely more successful chapter.
He's awesome. The internet gave him a lot of attention over what's essentially making fun of his song. But instead of being bitter about it he used the attention to show the world what a great artist he is.
@@backgroundmusikThat’s such a good way to put it. He actually has a great voice! I wasn’t even intending to watch, but his performance really grabbed me.
That was a genuinely outstanding cover. It makes me wonder if Rick never should have been a pop star because he was always a ROCK STAR at heart. Fantastic.
it might be because he sounds a bit like David Bowie, and he didn't want to stand in that legend's shadow. I'm grateful to have heard this number, was pretty tight
When he was really out of the limelight before meme took off in 2000's and early 2010's he was playing pubs in London drumming and singing in a Punk and Metal covers band. He is a Rock Star at heart, and remember even though he was launched to fame by S.A.W. he started as a Rock drummer.
Respectfully, my mate's in a band, and they play "covers". Mr. Astley, here, performed art. Again, I'm not picking a fight, just trying to compliment Rick.
Maybe he was just a joke to us once upon a time, but enough time has passed now for us to say without a hint of irony, Rick Astley is a forward-thinking music legend.
@@tristanvillalontriss9220In their low ranges(like in the verse here) They do have pretty similar tones, but Rick Astley doesn't quite have the range grohl has in the higher end, also Rick has a bit more of a twang accent and less growl/rasp in the higher end as well. I hear what you mean tho
@@aresefyep I remember he did a great acoustic cover at the start of the pandemic and said in an interview after it was one of his favorite songs ever.
Wow, his band actually looks like they're having fun and want to be there. With a performer like Rick, that says a lot about him as an artist and a man.
I bet he can play pretty well but this song is legit a beginners song if you learn the acoustic it can easily be someone’s first song. But his barre chords look smooth he clearly plays at least at an intermediate-preforming level though his strumming pattern was off. Dave explains he made the riff to hit like drums all down strokes _ _ - _- - _ - _ _ - _ - - - -
@@realSethMeyers between labels, recording studios, studio musicians, and gigging… I mean, that’s basically the ecosystem by word of mouth you get recommended or hear about it.
I have genuine respect for Rick Astley for not only resurrecting his career, but doing so the right way. The man is a true talent, and he killed this cover. Everyone sounded amazing as well. I would love to hear him do more Foo Fighters covers, we all know he and Dave Grohl are buddies, so I'm sure Dave approved of this wholeheartedly. I bet if he covered, "Learn to Fly", he would kill that too. I hope Rick continues to do this and continues to make music for years to come.
the backup singers were such a great addition to the song. i have no idea why not many bands have tried to implement it when covering this song. so good.
Absolutely nailed it, entire band are superb. We all know him and grohl are mates and to me this is why music is so great, great players covering each others music, paying respect to one another. Outstanding
The whole band's love for Dave & the Foos couldn't be more obvious. Captured this well-worn tune's spirit beautifully without sounding well-worn, and added their own little spins. Homie's pretty handy with a guitar too, dang. Gotta love how he came back like a boss recently, fully embraced the meme, then proceeded to blow minds with how good he _really_ is 😈 A truly lovely man who deserves every bit of late recognition and success he's getting ✊✨
He did the song justice. Good for him. His most well known song was never, in my opinion, a bad song. And all the Rick Rolls helped this man's career see a resurgence. I wish him well.
And everyone thinks hes a one-hit wonder? I think people forget Rick is truly a musician. Voice and guitar on point and stayed original to the tempo and tone of the original while putting his own spin on it. Well done Rick!
Wait, who called him a one-hit wonder? He has two #1 hits, the other being "Together Forever" (and yes,, it also got a ton of radio play back in the day), and three other songs that ended up in the top 10 (going by Us charts, and arguably he did better in other countries too). Crazy thing is, he probably could have been even more successful - he had a bunch of recordings for his second album destroyed in a fire, and he chose to slow down his career for family reasons in 1994. There's no doubt in my mind he could've charted well in a year like 1996 or 1997 if he truly had focused on maintaining his momentum.
He's really quite suited to it. He clearly loves it too, when you see his smile as the backing sings come in on the chorus. A legend ressurected by a meme.
Props to the band and sound engineer, the mix sounds damn near as good as the original recording, and his voice is as strong as ever. You're a real one, Rick!
I generally listen to music outside of mainstream pop and rock, grew up with a love for stuff like Talking Heads, Pixies, Jane's Addiction etc., also love reggae, but my favorite music is abstract electronic music without vocals, such as ambient techno, dub techno and IDM, very different to this ha ha. Just clicked on this video out of curiosity and liked it more than I expected for some reason.@@TitaniumTurbine
If you're referring to those bands that I mentioned, of course they are, but they are not what I generally listen to, just what I grew up with (read the second half of my sentence beginning with "but"). Geez, how did I get here, I only wanted to make 1 small comment about liking the video, and why does every second comment online have to be analysed and treated like some debate lol.@@sammyrockywelly
The second he strummed I heard Everlong. I loved that The Foos sang with Rick on a Classic and an Ode to them for bringing him to sing, he plays their ultimate Classic. 👏👏👏👏. And he did really good. ❤❤❤❤
if you would have told me that Rick Astley's cover of my fav Foo Fighters song would be my fav about a decade ago, I'd call you crazy lol but this is amazing! You can feel the love/respect
Stellar!! The music world could use more of this model of crossover covers/collaboration. This absolutely is an amazing cover of my favorite Foo Fighters song. And may I add... The backup vocalists are STUNNING in talent, energy, and beauty. W❤W! The band Rickrolled the @#$%! outta that song!
I love how something he did years ago during the great shutdown of the world and uploaded to RU-vid has turned into a set piece for him. One of the best covers of one of the best songs, both groups/people legends.
He released an acoustic single back in 2020, but I would adore this version to get a release ❤️ love both him and FF and he honestly covers this perfectly ❤️
I've been very impressed by Rick's skill and talent since I heard his cover of this during the pandemic. It was an idea that he had ability but to hear him to it so convincingly perform this definitely cemented it. I'm glad he wasn't a one hit wonder.
