The Band in "Always there" Keyboards George Duke Keyboards Mark Stephens Trumpet Rick Braun Tenor Saxophone Kirk Whalum Tenor Saxophone Boney James Alto Saxophone Kenny Garrett Guitar Larry Carlton Bass Mike Manson Drums Billy Kilson Great performance!!!
All children of all color's were born with ears to feel the music. To feel the rhythm of life to help us along our days always listening forever. Great magic jam like war playing all day music. Our ears see what our eyes don't
Holy Cow!!!!!!! Rick Braun, Larry Carlton, Kenny Garrett, Boney James, Kirk Whalum & George Duke all on the same stage at the same time, it doesn't get any better than that.
Chaplain u are 100 % right george Duke can in anywhere that's how gifted, creative, and amazing he was and always challenged himself and was truly diverse in different genres of music; and I'm that same way why because I don't allow anyone to limit, block me and do what I do best and that's playing music)keyboards and vocals, songwriting)
After seeing and hearing this incredible Jazz performance. I can live more humane and transition into heaven with no doubts about the existence of God.
@@milesdust3465 and a God given talent.🤫 Focus and practice all you like, but there is something too sublime for words when a group like this morphs into something greater than the individual talent...it seems "creative" beyond an accidental combination of elements. No Big Bang here, just a creative continuum for our edification... 🙏
Three saxophonist playing in three different forms. Boney James style is more smooth jazz. Kenny Garrett is more hard bop and funky. And Kirk Whalum is playing more modal than melodic. And all three styles fit. That's one hell of a saxophone summit. Hard to pick a favorite. They all threw it down!!
What's more important, they're doing it in sequence: Boney lays down the law, Kenny picks it up, and Kirk breaks it. It's disappointing to read comments to this track that try to make it a competition between the saxes when they are clearly setting each other up.
phein 57 I hear you. I'm a jazz man to the bone. I also love basketball. Top three scorers in NBA history? Kareem. Karl Malone. Kobe Bryant. Three different players. Three different styles of getting the ball thru the hoop. All three worked.
These guys are at the top of their game!! Boney's tone is so smooth and he can bring the fire too. Kenny is the bop hard edge while being funky, Kirk brings fire with the tonal sound. I believe that once you get to a level of technical skills it's about your style and feel after that. I like the smooth fire sound myself but as a sax player myself I just love to hear good guys play, and these are some great players. Pure awesome performance. All of them. Duke, Braun, Carlton, never seen the drummer but he is sick wit it!!! Doesn't get any better!
+KakaLove Check out Billy Kilson on drums on the "When I Fall In Love" track off the "Chris Botti in Boston" DVD/Blu-ray. He is amazing (as is Billy Childs on piano)!!
Give the legend Larry Carlton some mention. His improvisation is on par with the best and his ability as a studio player through the decades to enhance the work of others is legendary.
Yes--Larry is a legendary guitarist--also a great composer and musical director-- just off the top my head-- he played the guitar solo on Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne-- also the MD on the Aja album--let's not forget he was the Crusaders guitarist in the seventies-- just to mention a few sessions-- mad props to Larry 🎵
The drummer is Billy Kilson, an he is no joke,he is to me one of the top 3 drummers out there, with him being No. 1, his style is amazing, and we know there are some awesome drummers out there, but this brotha is a league of his own, I have been following him for a long time, chk out more of his skills on RU-vid, one is called Billy Kilson on the drums and the other one is called Billy Kilson Drum Solo. All I CAN SAY IS "OMG "🥁🥁🥁
A true work of art from Kilson, laying it down like no other in this performance. A masterclass of passion and energy on percussion. Had the honor of seeing him perform with David Sanborn recently and he was just beautiful.
I've been funkified I've been soulified I have been calmified I am ready for bed and a peaceful night's sleep thank you so much for the music what a jam
I came across this West Coast Jazz song by listening to RICK Braun and Boney James Grazzin in the Grass and I just can't get enough Starts My Day Off Every Morning ❤
I have so much respect for all those players on stage but oh my lord!! Kenny Garrett!!! I had rewind his solo at least 4 times to fully take in what I was hearing!!!
Kenny Garrett is just an amazing musician, and the tone he gets from his sax is so spiritual. And Kirk Whalum, just incredible. But the biggest surprise to me was Boney James. Stayed true to his smooth style but brought some heat. I expected him to get wiped off the stage but he more than held his own and made it even better.
@@tonygeorge5805 George Duke on the keyboards.......u know its serious when George Duke shows up.......these guys are all serious, serious players.......😏
What the? Hey, been listening to this since Ronnie Laws released it back in '75. This is the best live instrumental version I've ever heard. So much energy, so much talent, so well recorded. Gimme some mo'
Hi Thom, I grew up in rural Michigan, and was 19 in 1975. Nobody was listening to this kind of music where we lived, but somehow my older brother was introduced to artists like Ronnie Laws, Stanley Turentine, Maynard Ferguson, and Bob James. I don't know how many times I listened to "Always There". Brings back great memories! Thanks for posting. Mark
@@Mark-pp7jyThis groove back in 75 for rural Michigan would be rare, I also listened to the same artists you mentioned, and I still gravitate to them today. I'm from New Jersey and played Rock, R&B, Funk during the early 70's with several bands in the Philly area.. miss those days too!
Just saw this and gave me the chills,..seeing Big Daddy George Duke, and the powerhouses of the Sax world. It was the perfect melodic storm of excellence,..my God what I wouldn't have done to be there. Billy Kilson killing it on drums and I think that was Mike Manson on Bass....Whew!..Damn!
Man, I could listen to this everyday..all day. These cats on fire.....I had the pleasure of meeting..Braun, James and Peter White at Clifford Brown Jazz Festival one year..Great performances. Got to meet them..gracious..even tho it hat started to rain. Najee was there to..all great performances. Wish I was here in person..I probably would have fainted from happiness.

For me it's Sooo On Point..miss going to see live JAZZ..But this right here I Celebrate all who Listen to The Sounds of Greatness..God Did it for us through These Awesome Cats.. coming out of the front Door with this 1 here right Now Moments..Glory To God Almighty
Tutti 0:58 Boney James 2:25 Kenny Garrett 4:35 Kirk Whalum 6:35 Tutti 8:55 Kenny Garrett absolutely killed it! Some of his solos are too out there for me, but this one was fantastic.
Thanks for the info dude...I was about to ask who's solos where since I'm not familiar whit these amazing players...ps. I'm still waiting for Larrys' solo :( LOL
AWESOME Sound & Footage presented here... We KNOW the Sax Trio Killed it but I'll TELL you the ANCHOR of THAT Bass & Drums literally was TWIN Jet Engines THRUSTING The Sound UPWARD!! Damn Sam!!@@

Never was a jazz listener until I heard Boney James and Paul Hardcastle....but These men on stage are Beast at what they do. I wish I was talented like that.
That drummer should be watched by every begginer and intermediate Drummer on how to keep a pocket and when to fit a roll into a song. He was phenomenal too
Love it, love it, love it!!!!!!! Every since I ran across this about four months ago on YT I can listen to this everyday and please don't forget the DRUMMER and George Duke doing his thing. Every musician on this tune is ripe!!!!!!
FANTASTIC!!!! An All-Star band at its funkiest best!!! Jazz Funk supremo!!!I never get tired of listening to and watching this performance.I am sure that Ronnie Laws would have approved of this rendition.
It could not possibly get any better than this! Each musician is absolutely the best. This is jazz nirvana. They all compliment each other as only true professionals could.
This is and was a life time experience, for those who was lucky enough to be there! I would have lost my mind...Every muscle in my body would have been sore, the next day. Needless, to say I wouldn't had a voice. Thanks for sharing.
What a Phenomenal Melody and Performance. Your Music make feel so Relax. All of you are MASTERS. THANK YOU. Im from Dominican Republic. PUNTA CANA. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
THIS IS JAMMIN FUNK! While Boney James is in his groove, you can't help but be in the place where he is in that moment! All the guys are putting it down! I love it!!
I had the pleasure of meeting Rick Braun in St Louis at his outdoor show on the river front several years ago. It was perfect. I got to just chat with him for at least 10 minutes and I'll never forget that show ever!
I would have lost my mind if I saw this in person! I saw one of George's last concerts and his last Smooth Jazz cruise and participated in his Q&A. We miss him but we have his music!!
It has been a perfect performance for me having a lovely and awesome Fan like you, thanks for subscribing to my RU-vid page, I really appreciate the love and support you showered on me !!! Kindly send me a text here to talk better 615-667-9728 or rickbraunofficials@gmail.com .......
I got into music, vocals especially and percussion in my early teens and played alot of clubs and am 72 and it's still in my blood. I just love the contemporary jazz of today. It's R&B Soul, funk and awesome musical talent that IS NOT in Rap bands. Yu guys are ALL GREAT and it is on my goodbye Wish list to see you all prior to going to that stage in heaven. God Bless ALLOF you guys and your musical talents. Keep your sound COMING. It's REAL Music🙏😎❤️👍
The sax’s did there thing as expected. But I have to give the bass player some. Whoever was on bass was killing it. And the drummer is having so much fun.
OK LET ME START OFF BY SAYING INCREDIBLE!! BEST JAM SESSION EVER ON STAGE WITH MULTIPLE TALENTS! THE DRUMMER WAS SO ANIMATED YOU CAN TELL HE LOVES HIS JOB! 2ND YOU 999 THUMBS DWN PEOPLE DNT KNOW MUSIC ( MY OPINION. YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME (REALLY????
Great. The late Jeff Golub did a slick, grooving, smooth, yet equally great version of this tune on the 1997 CD, 'Night Life', w/ his former band Avenue Blue
