The actual reason why these tricks work is way more interesting than the trick itself for me Edit: a few people are asking me to justify this statement, to be honest I don't wish to as I don't think I can fully answer this with clarity but on the other hand it's best I try and hopefully I do a good enough job of it! What is great is that we have kicked off a mathematical discussion anyone can enjoy! Both number theory and basic algebraic theory can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in it 😁 Within number theory (I did a short uni based course, I'm no mathematician!) I really enjoyed modular arithmetic when applied with Euler's algorithm and Bezouts lemma as it gives some lovely ideas on how and why division works. When applied with exponents the numbers get very interesting with all the patterns available. It was the elements of moving what appeared to be algebraic expressions around to give such a consistent answer which made me think of the patterns in number theory.
